come on man we in L.A
0:02
Sway in the Morning ahead of being Tracy
0:04
G they on vacation
0:06
so we're doing the Lions then I got my
0:07
fellas back in New York DB what up baby
0:09
you good torch what up you good you've
0:11
been excited about this one um for a
0:14
minute when I think about this young man
0:16
and when I first feed the streets came
0:19
out back in yo this is so crazy back in
0:22
2017 almost five years to this very date
0:27
what's the date today what is the date
0:29
today 18 yeah 18th
0:33
feed to streets one came out on the 22nd
0:36
right of November 17th and
0:40
um assistant this man has been a
0:42
Billboard Chart topping this man has
0:44
gotten a Grammy this man has been around
0:46
the world
0:48
um he's faced a lot of adversity even in
0:50
his success we've seen him go through
0:52
some trials and tribulations but that
0:54
doesn't Define him nothing he
0:56
experienced in his career I will
0:58
supersede what he experienced in his
1:00
life growing up and so when I listened
1:03
to this young man and I listened to his
1:05
lyrics uh from his music I understand
1:07
that he got a purpose in this
1:09
you know in his first mixtape he talked
1:12
about being certified broke not for sure
1:15
he he said Being Broke is annoying
1:17
[Laughter]
1:21
when these dudes be shining on you and
1:23
you know you can't afford it right
1:27
it's far from broke now please welcome
1:29
him to the show The One and Only Roddy
1:31
Richards in his name he's Rich what are
1:34
we talking about
1:35
[Laughter]
1:37
come on man welcome to the show hey
1:41
what's up appreciate you for having me
1:42
but I see how Jesus oh yeah give it to
1:45
me man I'll take it
1:48
come on I've been watching you since the
1:50
younger man come on appreciate you sway
1:52
ain't that crazy I'm saying yeah yeah
1:54
let me tell I'm gonna look at you like
1:57
you see me look at people too that's
1:58
just really who I am everything you see
2:01
me do is who I am all right appreciate
2:03
it uh because like you I started off as
2:06
an artist and a lot of folks don't know
2:09
that they think I started on MTV I don't
2:11
tell them but if you do the research
2:13
you'll find out I started off as an
2:15
emcee it's crazy yeah man trying to find
2:17
my voice
2:18
trying to figure it out me and my
2:20
partner King Tech you know yeah that's
2:23
how we started him a DJ did it
2:25
independently from the bag came to LA
2:27
as we start working the radio and that's
2:30
when the legend things start happening
2:32
with the world famous wake up show but
2:34
had I not started as an artist I might
2:37
not have the same insight and empathy
2:39
right as a journalist
2:41
well [ __ ] that just as a person who's
2:43
from the culture I don't even like the
2:45
title journalist that's not why I got in
2:47
it so when I listen to you and I go back
2:51
and listen to I went through all a lot
2:52
of your music
2:53
um anti-social all the projects you know
2:56
uh live life fast
2:58
um I go through all these projects all
3:00
your mixtapes and I hear from the
3:03
beginning to now
3:06
you found your voice right you know what
3:08
I mean when when how did you find your
3:11
voice when did you know you was set in
3:13
your voice I this is who I want to be as
3:16
an artist and this is what I want to say
3:18
yeah you know it just it almost comes
3:21
naturally it's something you sharpen you
3:23
know what I'm saying but when you get in
3:25
the studio and you just you just hear
3:27
the music you just kind of let it take
3:29
you you know what I'm saying and then
3:31
you create these bodies of work but it
3:33
almost come naturally but when you talk
3:36
about sharpening and trying to dig
3:37
deeper and find different sounds and
3:39
[ __ ] like that that just comes from like
3:40
repetition and working hard so you sound
3:43
like a professional right now because
3:45
you've been nah nah nah nah it just it's
3:49
just all just
3:51
you know it just it's just all natural
3:53
like you gotta just go with the flow you
3:55
know sometimes it may not be the best
3:58
sometimes it may be the best sometimes
4:00
it you know you just gotta kind of just
4:02
go with the flow yeah who did you sync
4:04
with what I mean is
4:06
somebody something some moment made you
4:08
believe that you can make this into a
4:10
career
4:11
when did that happen I feel like it was
4:14
more so doubt even because it was like
4:18
um my family didn't really think I could
4:20
do it you know people around you know
4:23
how La is like a lot of people don't
4:26
make it out of the circumference of you
4:30
know what I'm saying let's keep it right
4:31
there in that box right so it's like
4:33
right so it's like
4:35
it was more so the doubt that made me
4:37
want to be like all right I want to be
4:39
bigger I want to do more I want to do
4:41
something better like so that doubt kind
4:44
of drive me to
4:45
flip it into like positive you know what
4:48
I'm saying when did you know it's gonna
4:50
work though like see the reason why I
4:53
stopped them seeing
4:54
um well I didn't stop but it wasn't
4:57
working like I wanted to and so I
4:59
graduated into doing more independent
5:02
stuff
5:02
uh we did have a song that did decent
5:05
this is your interview but damn it as I
5:07
talked about it I feel like we got so
5:08
much in common [ __ ] I feel like I'm
5:09
talking to myself right but at one point
5:13
one song we had was called follow for
5:15
now right and it started doing well in
5:16
the bay that's when I said oh this can
5:18
work you know was there a moment where
5:20
you in the studio where did you rap or
5:23
sing in front of somebody that made that
5:25
gave you acclimation and made you think
5:26
oh this could work
5:29
um
5:30
I feel like I just always had a love for
5:32
music you know what I'm saying and but
5:35
see I never didn't I never thought I
5:37
couldn't okay what I'm saying to be
5:38
honest okay I never thought I couldn't
5:40
do it like
5:42
um you know definitely just being in it
5:45
you feel me you're gonna Express
5:47
where you at in life that's just with
5:49
anything any form of art you're gonna
5:51
Express where you are but I feel like I
5:54
just always believed that I was gonna do
5:57
something you know what I'm saying like
5:58
it may not have been rapping it could
6:00
have been
6:01
signing people or making beats or
6:05
whatever like I just knew that I was
6:07
going to do something within some type
6:09
as some type of music you know what I'm
6:11
saying because I just love music type of
6:12
thing so that's just all it was I don't
6:15
think I ever doubted it though you never
6:16
doubted it okay wow that's that's
6:19
impressive I know
6:20
um I read that a lot of folks some of
6:22
your early influences uh Thugger you
6:25
know um yeah Lil Wayne yeah you know um
6:29
all of these folks that uh you wanna you
6:31
actually got a chance to collaborate
6:32
Kendrick you haven't done that yet but
6:34
yeah
6:35
the one that really um stood out to me
6:38
was uh speak knockers I was Speaker
6:40
Knockerz yeah Speaker Knockerz uh I used
6:43
to love his song he had a song called
6:45
Lonely yeah uh prior to his untimely
6:48
death he died in 2014. yeah and and I
6:52
mean I mean it's with the most respect
6:54
but 2014 that's eight years ago you were
6:57
a very young person at that time how did
7:00
you what was it about him that you know
7:02
that was like high school yeah you know
7:04
that was um
7:05
that's what we was listening to oh me I
7:08
feel like just being from La I always
7:10
wanted to listen to some some that
7:12
everybody wasn't listening to you know
7:15
what I'm saying like because everybody
7:16
just listened to the same thing so I was
7:19
like I'm listening to Chief Keef let me
7:21
listen little dirt let me listen to you
7:23
know I'm saying speaker knocker let me
7:24
listen to Just other artists that ain't
7:27
necessarily
7:28
I don't know from where I'm from my
7:31
little thing in high school so that's
7:33
what I did and kind of just fell in love
7:36
with his flow like just what he was
7:38
talking about too like the Finesse
7:40
inflation finessing like you know when I
7:43
was in high school and I was coming up
7:44
the main thing that [ __ ] was doing was
7:47
just like certain things so it's just
7:50
like we could relate to that you know
7:51
what I'm saying like just certain things
7:52
so
7:54
um he was just somebody that was
7:56
relatable at the time and his his music
7:58
was good for sure it was good he told
8:00
stories and stuff like that you do that
8:02
you do it um I think you do that really
8:04
well we got Roddy rich with us I'm
8:06
opening up these phone lines too
8:09
888-742-3345 let me say this it's it's I
8:13
think
8:14
when it comes to entertainment is
8:16
there's there's certain things we don't
8:17
consider we we have all these
8:19
expectations of artists you know and
8:21
then when you start seeing the end
8:23
result you see you know Roddy Rich
8:26
charting on Billboard or you see him
8:28
um on tour with post Malone or you know
8:30
you see him on these um all of these
8:33
stages I've seen you on man you've been
8:34
on some really huge stages and all I
8:38
could think is I wonder how he's
8:40
handling
8:41
all of this there's no orientation
8:43
there's no class yeah right people see
8:46
the fame and they see the rich the
8:48
riches but there's a lot that comes with
8:51
that you know and so during this time
8:54
period when Rockstar was out the box was
8:57
all these big songs was happening how
8:59
did you cope what was your coping
9:01
mechanism was it easy or
9:03
yeah I feel like it was easy at that
9:05
time damn bro you ain't got no issues
9:08
not like that but at that time at that
9:11
time it was easy yeah I'm saying because
9:13
I didn't really have to think about too
9:14
much but
9:15
uh
9:17
you know after after the success of when
9:20
you get to reap the benefits of those
9:22
things I feel like
9:25
that's when it started turning on not
9:27
like a bad thing you just got it's a lot
9:29
of things to process a lot of different
9:31
things you gotta uh
9:33
you know you gotta just work on
9:36
[ __ ] yeah do you get you know money now
9:40
you know I mean yeah you have to learn
9:42
about money in a different way right
9:44
right yeah it's the street way we all
9:46
grew up on yeah but it's a whole
9:49
different type of ball game too when you
9:51
when you're doing that yeah you know
9:53
what I'm saying what's some of the
9:54
things you learned about money that's
9:56
different
9:57
um
9:59
save your money and it'll save you as
10:01
one of the I say that [ __ ] all the time
10:03
that's like one of my main things and
10:06
then two
10:07
um just trying to
10:09
I feel like
10:13
I'm young but you know I've been trying
10:15
to make sure that I set a good
10:18
foundation for like later on you know
10:20
what I'm saying as far as like just
10:22
buying different
10:24
um
10:24
like I got real estate we're working on
10:27
building out a studio right now the
10:30
offices and get them in a round of
10:31
applause just like just just um just
10:34
building that out so we can so we can uh
10:38
you don't have longevity in it you know
10:40
what I'm saying and when we when we
10:41
bringing producers along when we grow
10:43
them artists you know what I'm saying we
10:45
can acclimate for all that and do
10:47
different things like that so you know
10:49
been working one more I'm on different
10:50
construction projects okay all right
10:52
stuff like that so it's easy doing
10:55
business with family yeah so I don't do
10:57
a business with a lot of them I just
11:02
I just do I just do it with my twos and
11:05
fuse I could you know what I'm saying
11:07
okay I like that man uh Roddy Richards
11:09
here man we just looking at each other
11:11
staring at each other right now
11:14
we're both like damn I finally I don't
11:17
want to do an interview yeah yeah
11:20
foreign
11:24
let's pull up this this uh
11:27
lyrical I want to do a lyrical breakdown
11:29
torch
11:31
can we do a lyrical breakdown you got
11:32
that intro all right let me get it right
11:34
now okay uh we're gonna do a lyrical
11:37
breakdown you got a song that I I really
11:40
want to
11:42
um get into this first verse
11:44
because uh
11:46
the significance of what you're saying I
11:50
think what
11:51
um the narratives that surround our
11:53
artists that come from our culture uh to
11:56
me is is really not it doesn't have
11:59
enough dimensions and layers to it most
12:02
of the things we hear about or see it
12:04
has to do with controversy tragedy right
12:07
right A lot of times majority of things
12:09
we but we don't really get a lot of
12:11
times under the surface and
12:15
I try to find things about people and
12:17
artists that stand out to me that I
12:19
think are impressionable and impactful
12:21
to those that buy their music right in
12:24
your case
12:25
um coming from where you're from Compton
12:26
right
12:27
coming from where you're coming from
12:29
this success means more yeah to people
12:32
who are in Compton right right and then
12:34
people who are in places like Compton
12:36
and what I like to point out it's not
12:38
you know I could play different songs
12:40
where we'll hear Roddy Rich talking
12:41
about going down on you and getting you
12:43
really you know where you're just going
12:44
to explode from the juices you know
12:46
that's I'm joking but he looking at you
12:48
so yeah
12:49
I'm following
12:51
women I'm talking about women not men
12:56
I got you come on I could quote the song
13:01
okay I've heard you talk about a lot of
13:04
things in your music right you know
13:06
um but the thing that stands out to me
13:08
is when you become an inspiration
13:12
through your music right you know
13:15
um people who can relate to your journey
13:17
and your experience and your win make
13:19
them believe they can win so I want to
13:21
go through this song Belly of the Beast
13:23
uh this first this first verse let's go
13:26
into a lyrical breakdown you ready torch
13:28
hey in the morning I'd like to know
13:30
what's behind the energy of a song
13:34
the day you wrote Belly of the Beast you
13:36
remember where you were uh Miami all
13:39
right what was that Khalid house hanging
13:40
out
13:42
we was at a little studio in the cut
13:45
downtown okay it was it something that
13:49
inspired it or you heard the music and
13:51
this is what came out
13:53
I just let it take you know what I'm
13:55
saying just let it take me just
13:57
I'll be off the top with it so I'll be
13:58
off the top with it yeah oh okay damn it
14:00
you off the top yeah okay
14:03
I'm gonna go through these lyrics real
14:05
quick and then I just want to know where
14:07
you were at right mentally right
14:09
y the rich but I came from the broke
14:12
I'm the one that gave all these [ __ ]
14:14
hope right
14:16
that's is that your purpose in this I
14:19
feel like that's that's what we try to
14:20
Champion you know what I'm saying coming
14:22
from where I come from it's not it's not
14:25
like you know it's not a lot of people
14:27
that really did what I did in no
14:30
capacity you know what I'm saying so I
14:33
try to like
14:35
let people know that I'm you I came from
14:38
where you came from if I did it you
14:40
could do it two type of thing that's
14:41
important to you yeah for sure got to
14:44
Champion that you got to Champion that
14:45
okay I'm the one who climbed to the top
14:48
of the slope I'm the one out in Japan
14:50
for the looks for the looks for the
14:52
Lokes yeah for the Lokes yeah not the
14:55
lows break that down Deluxe if you know
14:59
you know I'm saying okay yeah it looks
15:01
like
15:02
um I'm the one clients at the top of the
15:04
slope I'm going out in Japan for the
15:06
looks I'm saying is this
15:08
I don't know when I'm in Japan for
15:10
people like me yeah even oh for the logs
15:13
okay damn it it took me a second for
15:16
that thank you
15:16
[Laughter]
15:19
for your patience
15:22
work with the legend man
15:24
okay when you traveled the first place I
15:28
ever traveled outside of the States was
15:30
Amsterdam right you know I went for the
15:32
architecture yeah yeah right yeah what
15:34
was the first place you traveled outside
15:36
of the states I think it's the UK the UK
15:39
right yeah yeah what was it like though
15:40
for you like was that culture shock or
15:43
definitely a coach's sock it was crazy
15:44
it's crazy
15:46
uh
15:48
I was more observant than anything
15:49
though I was just more so just
15:53
watching everything how they live how
15:55
they dress
15:56
you know what they eat like I was just
15:59
interested in that like kind of trying
16:01
to just figure it out because when you
16:04
come from a place where
16:06
even us you know like we far from the
16:09
rest of the world you know what I'm
16:10
saying or our country like New York
16:13
Philly Miami
16:15
Texas even whatever like we still a
16:18
little distance from everyone you know
16:20
what I'm saying so it's like just being
16:22
from where I'm from I'm always feel like
16:24
I'm secluded from things so to just
16:26
going over there kind of just made me
16:27
just I don't know I just wanted to see
16:29
how they how they felt about certain
16:31
things
16:32
they just they different they're
16:34
different right yeah when you try not in
16:36
a bad way like I seen like a lot of
16:38
people are like a lot more healthy you
16:40
know what I'm saying over there eating
16:42
habits is way different way healthier
16:45
um streets is cleaner you know what I'm
16:47
saying different things like that you'll
16:49
pay attention to like oh [ __ ] you know
16:51
what I'm saying they just live a little
16:52
different do you think if people
16:55
um growing up like in a place like
16:57
Compton in the neighborhood you grew up
16:59
in if they had a chance to travel
17:01
outside of Compton or these
17:04
neighborhoods and see other areas other
17:06
people other ways of life
17:08
it might kind of change and mentality
17:10
and helping folks you know really get to
17:12
the places they want to go for sure yeah
17:14
for sure I just feel like it it'll help
17:18
to to broaden the horizon or you know
17:21
what I'm saying um
17:23
yeah you get what I'm saying it helped
17:25
him it'll help to Broad their Horizon
17:27
and and and and and find new heights you
17:30
know what I'm saying that's definitely
17:31
what what needed to be going on in the
17:33
community we live in because a lot of
17:35
people just get kind of just stating and
17:38
where they at
17:39
even if you even think about it like
17:42
this right like okay boom I'm from the
17:44
city and then I I moved to Beverly Hills
17:46
that's 25 minutes from where I was just
17:47
at ain't that crazy but but it's a whole
17:50
nother life
17:51
it is a whole nother life you show us a
17:53
whole nother life but is it really mhm
17:57
is it really because it's only 25
17:59
minutes it's a mentality then it's
18:02
psychological right you could say that
18:04
right
18:06
I'm asking you now oh you're asking me
18:09
is it really is it really a different
18:10
life different life it's a what I well
18:13
that's a good question I could tell you
18:15
a story because I know the answer is
18:16
what I'm saying but you go ahead well
18:19
[ __ ]
18:19
you the fast today too
18:23
I feel like
18:25
um well let me use when I moved from
18:28
Oakland to the valley here in L.A right
18:30
and I used to trip because I would walk
18:33
outside and you know people Gates would
18:37
be open
18:38
you know what I mean like people doors
18:40
would be open like damn man I was
18:42
telling the tech where we live man you
18:44
know um but I got used to it right right
18:47
and I and I start understanding that
18:49
there's nothing wrong with that right
18:50
maybe the dysfunction is in my mindset
18:53
thinking that I have to be locked up I'm
18:55
gonna tell you a story now okay ready
18:56
yeah
18:58
I was in the city moving around right
19:02
okay boom Roddy has feed the streets he
19:06
gets money he moves to downtown Beverly
19:08
Hills it's called Century City right so
19:11
boom he moves into building celebrities
19:15
in there you know old money in there
19:18
everybody in there every time I'm
19:21
hopping I'm coming down through the
19:22
lobby Ferraris Rolls Royce everything
19:25
at this time
19:27
EDD it's cracking right
19:32
so I'm I'm 30 floors up I'm supposed to
19:35
be rich right now yeah 30 floors up
19:38
secluded from everything
19:40
I look out my window I look on Rodeo
19:44
seeing all black people down there I'm
19:47
seeing all the I'm seeing all you but in
19:50
my mind not to be raised but in my mind
19:52
it's like I'm in Beverly Hills that
19:55
ain't normal you know what I'm saying
19:57
I'm thinking when I come over here it's
20:00
probably gonna be two or three or four
20:01
of us not you know that's bad to say but
20:04
that's just the reality of them because
20:06
I grew up over there I know you know
20:07
what I'm saying I grew up in the city so
20:09
I kind of understand like I didn't go to
20:10
the Beverly Center until I was 17 18.
20:12
you feel me I didn't even know what it
20:14
was you've been you lived in La your
20:16
whole life and you know I didn't even
20:17
know what it was you didn't know what
20:19
the Beverly Center shop no no
20:22
wow until Nipsey said uh uh he said
20:26
Hudson Jeans these ain't the regular
20:27
denim slide to the Beverly Center get
20:30
some Hudson Jeans these ain't the
20:31
regular dinner he said something like
20:32
that and I'm like I'm like [ __ ] first
20:34
of all what's Hudson Jeans second of all
20:36
what's the Beverly Center
20:37
I ain't know you know what I'm saying so
20:39
just in my mind boom We I move up to a
20:42
high rise I'm looking down I'm seeing
20:44
I'm just like and these ain't just
20:47
pedestrians these is like [ __ ] you
20:50
know what I'm saying like I just seen
20:51
you [ __ ] in the hood yeah so I'm like
20:55
damn
20:56
How uh get to a point where I feel like
20:59
I'm actually seeing some success I'm
21:02
actually getting some traction and like
21:04
[ __ ] I can't even like I can't I still
21:06
can't even really breathe like that
21:09
right now you get what I'm saying
21:10
because it just like you feel suffocated
21:12
in that way so that kind of [ __ ] my
21:15
head up too yeah you know what I'm
21:16
saying like I'm like damn
21:19
so what am I supposed to do I moved all
21:22
the way to Beverly Hills
21:26
hell no that [ __ ] boring I don't want to
21:29
be in the sticks you know what I'm
21:30
saying because I still got to be in the
21:32
mix I still got to go to the studio I
21:34
still gotta feel the city I can't just
21:36
be you know what I'm saying because I'm
21:38
not a I'm not a
21:40
you know you know I'm not one of those
21:43
I'm a thinker but I'm not a philosopher
21:46
you feel me I don't go out in the sticks
21:49
and be I like to have fun I like to do
21:51
certain things so it's just you know if
21:53
it was like kind of like damn
21:56
that was that trips you out that
21:58
aesthetic that that bugged you out you
22:00
just bugged me out with that story too
22:01
you tell way better stories to me
22:04
um so
22:08
um
22:09
the interesting thing I find about this
22:11
culture too is um I hear you saying I'm
22:15
trying to move to places to get to a new
22:17
space yeah but see when I say Well
22:20
they're gonna be like black people
22:24
that's why I said [ __ ] because like
22:27
[ __ ] is different from black people
22:28
yeah okay
22:30
we can see black people all day but it's
22:34
like when you see a [ __ ] and you and
22:36
you going you going to go yard and he
22:38
you know what I'm saying he might be
22:39
looking a little crazy yeah you know
22:42
what I'm saying that's a difference you
22:44
might not you know what I'm saying he
22:46
ain't spending his own money he's
22:47
spending somebody else money you get
22:49
what I'm saying yeah that's what's going
22:50
on so I was seeing [ __ ] like that
22:53
where you know like
22:55
hey you know shop over here like you
22:57
just you know what I'm saying like it's
22:59
a certain thing like you got I know that
23:01
energy I know it all too well yeah you
23:04
got to stay alert you feel me so that's
23:05
all it was but
23:07
yeah it just man that was that was a
23:10
Trippy experience like damn right when I
23:13
get money everybody want to give me
23:14
everybody want to get money
23:15
you know what maybe you inspired them to
23:18
want to get money yeah that's that's
23:20
cool too but that's cool too but when
23:22
you when you move out when you move out
23:25
like that and you like okay I'm about to
23:27
you want to see something get my I'm
23:29
gonna get my life on like me I'ma just
23:32
have my tuck up Beats like man that [ __ ]
23:34
was crazy and right now you go over
23:36
there right now I moved from over there
23:38
you go over there right now I got some
23:39
homes to live over there now peaceful
23:41
nothing going on yeah I'm talking when I
23:44
say I was looking out the window and
23:45
seeing [ __ ] like you were so the whole
23:48
it looked like a a block party out there
23:50
like yeah like that like it wasn't just
23:53
no oh no [ __ ] the lines down the street
23:57
Louis V line all the way down this
23:59
street that line all the way like I'm
24:01
like damn this [ __ ] for weeks and months
24:04
and months like damn bro that drove you
24:07
crazy
24:09
hey man that's the and but here's a good
24:12
thing
24:14
you bought a property in Beverly Hills
24:16
give that man a round of applause
24:19
that's ill Belly of the Beast is what
24:22
you say it's about Compton or or just uh
24:25
I feel like just the environment yeah
24:27
just the environment everything I had to
24:29
go through everything I had to
24:30
experience was the belly of the Beast
24:33
you know what I'm saying I want to talk
24:35
about those things too coming up next we
24:36
got Roddy Rich phone lines are open
24:40
888-742-3345 let's go into that belly of
24:42
the Beast Sway in the Morning shave four
24:44
or five Friday rich
24:46
he's with us today Grammy award-winning
24:49
artist
24:51
multi-million multi Platinum
24:54
multi-platinum artists came from Compton
24:57
you wouldn't believe what he's seen come
25:00
on you would not believe what he's
25:02
saying we often talk about the hardships
25:05
in our lives especially coming through
25:06
this culture and we watch companies and
25:09
institutions really uh profit off of our
25:12
pain
25:13
but there's more to it our journey isn't
25:15
just pain we have we're full of emotions
25:17
right right right you know and when I
25:19
listen to this song fade away you know
25:21
this is the same man that wrote feed the
25:24
streets or a free game or it's the same
25:27
man that belly of the Beast you know
25:29
that wrote these songs that talk about a
25:31
reality that's very harsh but at the
25:33
same time there's balance in life right
25:36
you seem like a very romantic person
25:39
when I listen to this song You romantic
25:42
bro
25:43
uh more or less I I would just say uh
25:47
you know I understand women a little bit
25:49
okay okay this is a very Charming song
25:53
is that is that how you
25:55
um and I'm not being facetious but it's
25:58
typically that's how you approach a
26:00
woman when you when you get involved if
26:03
you're interested is it more about charm
26:05
is it more about braggadocious what
26:06
works for you I feel like I just be cool
26:09
I just I'll just be chilling you feel me
26:12
like and uh you know that's typically
26:15
just you know you just
26:18
which is
26:19
come I guess no ain't never really had
26:22
to try like that oh [ __ ] damn you hear
26:25
that stuff right there
26:31
no but you ain't never had to try no
26:33
when we making the music
26:36
I ain't grow up into it like that you
26:39
know what I'm saying like oh I gotta get
26:40
all of we'll do it just yeah just having
26:42
natural you know you got your friends
26:44
and homegirls and end up you and they
26:47
end up pouring theyself into you telling
26:48
you everything that's how you start
26:50
understanding women like you know you
26:53
see a mile to go through things and
26:55
stuff like that or you just understand
26:57
them way better but uh yeah I'll never
27:01
really really be trying with
27:04
you never had no wolf ears
27:07
what you mean by that wolf years or
27:09
someone you out howling at the moon you
27:11
a wolf you're a male wolf and you take
27:13
it down
27:17
whatever seals whatever's out there in
27:20
the forest
27:22
you've taken them down baby
27:25
you wanted squirrels
27:29
you know Caribou no just be on my my
27:34
timing you know what I'm saying the
27:36
whole time and like you gotta just I've
27:38
been I've been chilling out though
27:40
lately like real chill yeah ain't been
27:43
too much I've been more focused on just
27:45
trying to just
27:47
you know focus on myself and [ __ ] like
27:50
just taking my time out to really pour
27:53
into myself but when I make those love
27:56
songs and stuff those would be about
27:57
just different experiences you know
28:00
um I'll never try to oh I feel like none
28:04
of the females that I dealt with really
28:06
like ended I don't know it ain't on a
28:08
bad note not really because this [ __ ]
28:10
be so smooth like you could be you could
28:13
be mad but I'ma always just be like it's
28:16
all right I'ma just ease it over type of
28:18
thing it's cool and then it should be
28:21
cool just be cool bam Roddy rich man
28:24
this man got game I like it I like it I
28:29
want to um let me see hopefully I can
28:31
find this I won't even read it it was um
28:34
no actually I'm going to read this um we
28:36
got Roddy Rich here and feed the streets
28:39
Three is out now I know we got a bunch
28:40
of callers on the line 888-742-3345
28:44
uh first of all congratulations on
28:46
touring with post Malone appreciate it I
28:49
share this story I'm not by any means
28:51
comparing post Malone with you too
28:54
but the first time I went outside of
28:56
seeing a hip-hop concert was uh uh what
28:59
was the group U2 out of Ireland he was
29:02
rock you familiar yeah yeah huge
29:04
legendary iconic group
29:06
someone in the bay had to trick me they
29:08
said you want to they thought I should
29:09
be open in my mind so they said you want
29:11
to um you want to go see Public Enemy
29:14
they were opening up for you too
29:16
and I was like oh [ __ ] this was in
29:18
Public Enemy was still new and I was
29:20
like yeah you got tickets today I was at
29:21
the Oakland Coliseum
29:22
I was like wow the Public Enemies at the
29:24
Coliseum right so I went and I'm telling
29:28
you Roddy it was it changed my life
29:31
it changed my life I was working radio
29:33
at that time too and I realized as a
29:35
whole what you're saying yeah we would
29:37
think we're the king of the world till
29:39
we step outside of our box right you
29:42
could be the king of your block in your
29:43
neighborhood and the moment you step
29:45
outside of that
29:47
the old reality changes yeah I saw a
29:50
Public Enemy perform and I was like yo
29:53
this is the hugest thing I ever seen
29:55
I saw you two come on behind them
30:00
bro that was out of this world
30:03
I had a bigger understanding of
30:05
you know Mass Appeal of um a global
30:09
international audience so someone like
30:12
post Malone
30:13
has that frequency right right when you
30:17
start touring with him was it what was
30:19
different did you see any was it
30:21
different
30:23
um yeah yeah you talked about the first
30:25
time yeah oh man yeah what was that like
30:29
I was performing songs it was I was
30:32
performing songs that wasn't even out
30:34
because I had one project out or two
30:36
projects out at the time so really I
30:39
just got the practice performing and
30:40
watching him
30:42
so just watching him and him being my
30:44
first example of how to be an artist you
30:47
get what I'm saying like
30:49
that for sure changed the trajectory of
30:51
how I even viewed
30:53
performing because a lot of rappers they
30:56
don't even sing but I didn't know that
30:59
because I don't go watch [ __ ] before
31:01
yeah it comes in yeah so I'm thinking
31:03
when I'm watching him I'm like oh that's
31:05
how you do it this is how you do it you
31:06
know I'm saying you go to clubs and
31:07
stuff like that but I'm talking about
31:09
real shows I've never been to like a
31:11
show like I don't I ain't grow up going
31:13
to shows so when I'm watching him it was
31:16
an example of like okay he's really
31:18
singing he got a guitar he's trying to
31:21
play it he's doing this he's doing that
31:23
so you know that just changed the whole
31:25
trajectory of how we attacked performing
31:27
live or just being I felt like even his
31:30
character bro outside of Performing like
31:33
having that as an example of who how to
31:36
be and not trying to be like him but
31:38
just he real like
31:41
like bright eye like he just like a kid
31:44
yeah I'm saying but he a grown man but
31:46
he just like hey buddy and we do that's
31:49
how he is I'm not that but I'm gonna be
31:52
my version of you know trying to have a
31:55
great spirit and be bright yeah you know
31:57
what I'm saying yeah I don't ever want
31:59
to be
32:00
um perceived or I mean I don't care
32:02
about perception but I'll never want to
32:04
be um you know I don't want the energy
32:06
to come across as like oh he's he don't
32:09
[ __ ] with me he'd be on this and he
32:11
don't care you know what I'm saying I
32:13
don't never want to be like that so I
32:15
try to you know hey what's going on all
32:17
right so yeah you know just in your own
32:20
way yeah he taught me a lot about
32:21
character performance it was a great
32:24
experience it's that's why I came full
32:26
circle to even come back and perform
32:28
with them when they asked me what all
32:30
right let's make it make sense as soon
32:32
as they can make just a little bit of
32:33
sense we going just because of like the
32:36
loyalty and really rocking with dude
32:38
like for real could do yeah yeah I've
32:41
been around I like that energy he ain't
32:43
taking nothing for granted yeah right
32:44
exactly exactly every moment he
32:46
maximizing it's interesting to me
32:50
um
32:51
when I think of you because I remember
32:53
seeing the narrative quickly briefly and
32:55
it doesn't Define you but I laughed at
32:57
it
32:58
um
32:59
I'll let me go back when people were
33:02
saying r b is dead right you've heard
33:04
that yeah
33:05
I had a conversation with Usher who has
33:09
been selling out Vegas
33:11
so much so that they got to rehire right
33:14
recontract them to do one shows
33:16
all his shows are sold out and these
33:18
things White House r b dead
33:20
unpacked every unpacked in every house
33:22
well Roddy rich I remember reading
33:24
something saying implying that you're on
33:27
a down slope right of popularity at one
33:30
point meanwhile you're on tour
33:33
we're posting alone two nights at
33:36
Madison Square Garden two nights of the
33:37
four and two nights at the stable Center
33:39
or the crypto Arena
33:41
Arenas Arenas Arena Arenas Arenas Arenas
33:46
where does that come from
33:48
I think it's just you know what I'm
33:51
gonna be real okay let's break this down
33:53
let's get it
33:54
I'm gonna be real I think that
33:57
people
33:59
put expectations on you
34:02
and
34:05
those expectations are never be met ever
34:10
I can make the best thing ever I could
34:12
say the craziest [ __ ] I could do
34:13
everything I'm supposed to do but if
34:18
these people
34:19
see me at this and they want to see me
34:23
go there and there's whatever they want
34:25
to see that's what they gonna that's
34:27
that's what they gonna put out and then
34:29
also too we got to take into
34:31
consideration the energy you put out
34:33
into the world yeah
34:35
at after all that success you know you
34:37
got to deal with a lot my energy wasn't
34:39
in the right place either so it's like
34:41
when you're dealing with people who
34:43
wanted you know they at the end of the
34:46
day I know this I came out the blue so
34:48
people people you know in in the pop
34:51
culture eyes I came out of the blue
34:53
smashing [ __ ] so there's no you know
34:56
at that point Down When They Don't
34:58
Really Wanna you know what I'm saying
34:59
they don't want to Champion that you
35:00
know what I'm saying they don't want to
35:01
Champion that so it's like
35:04
I can't I can't force that on you I
35:06
can't I can't make you wanna see me or
35:10
want to listen or whatever and I'm not
35:11
going to you feel me like even after
35:14
that album I could have been pushing it
35:16
pushing it pushing it pushing it I was
35:17
like just where I was at in life I was
35:19
just kind of like you know what that's
35:21
they own all right cool like I'm not
35:23
gonna be combative with it I'm not gonna
35:24
oh if you can you go download one dude I
35:28
don't care about none of that I put my
35:30
project out y'all may not have liked it
35:33
oh well you know what I'm saying it's
35:36
it's gold yeah so 500 000 copies oh [ __ ]
35:39
it's cold it's cool it's all right okay
35:41
we're gonna keep that's a success yeah
35:43
you get what I'm saying so in your eyes
35:46
it may be you know I feel like
35:50
people try to put they they version
35:52
their success on you they see they want
35:54
you to be with you but it may not be the
35:57
time right now you know what I'm saying
35:59
I may have something to learn I may have
36:01
something to grow in certain areas and
36:02
that's cool because at the end of the
36:05
day it's a marathon you know I look at
36:08
it like [ __ ] not to bring I ain't gonna
36:11
say names but it's older cats that you
36:14
know they just started they Journey at
36:16
27 or started they Journey at 27 in this
36:20
I'm talking about 90s rappers
36:23
27 28 and they and I'm 20 and I'm 20 and
36:28
21 yeah and we really doing it so it's
36:31
like I ain't even I'm not even behind
36:33
you get what I'm saying like I'm really
36:36
like just making my music
36:39
making sure my Foundation is set that
36:41
way when I'm focused and I kind of I
36:44
kind of want to get all my rights and
36:46
everything and do things of that nature
36:48
and really going forth and do real
36:50
business you know what I'm saying like
36:52
that's kind of how I want to do it so
36:54
you know we're gonna make it make sense
36:55
it's a long plan yeah right I'm chilling
36:58
yeah man I like where you at right now
37:00
I'm chilling you're chilling
37:02
how'd you get there did you take therapy
37:04
or something no I just talked to God and
37:08
you open that Bible you talk god a lot
37:10
in your music too and I appreciate that
37:12
a big round of applause about that
37:14
because you showed a full gamut
37:17
you you go from if you want it we got
37:19
smoke too yeah but David killed the life
37:23
you know what I'm saying yeah right
37:24
that's who we are
37:26
Roddy rich is in here man I'm having a
37:29
good time we got Kate on the line from
37:31
Minneapolis Katie what up Katie rise and
37:34
shine
37:35
hey hey what up what up
37:39
uh not much you know um but I do got a
37:41
question though
37:45
um so
37:46
I got a lot of buddies out here and they
37:48
they they think there's something you
37:50
know and I want to be a supporter and
37:53
more or less I'll try to ask uh did you
37:56
have a lot of support like when you
37:59
weren't that great uh and working on
38:01
yourself and doing all that [ __ ] uh how
38:04
did you come up and like was it the
38:07
people around you who figured it out and
38:09
like helped you get there or like was it
38:12
the criticism that helped and [ __ ]
38:17
um I got a combination of both you know
38:20
what I'm saying so like not for real I
38:23
feel like it was um you know I had some
38:25
good people around me in my closed
38:27
Circle you know that that helped me
38:30
guide my guide my talent I had Kiefer uh
38:34
bird you know it was a couple solid
38:36
dudes that was older and they were just
38:38
showing me how to work hard and navigate
38:41
through the music life and all that you
38:43
know what I'm saying and just life in
38:44
general you know and then at the same
38:46
time my passion and my drive came from
38:49
people doubting you know what I'm saying
38:50
so my guidance came from the people
38:53
around the energy came from the people
38:55
around and then my passion came from the
38:58
doubters and then they said you know I'm
39:00
saying people that say I couldn't do it
39:02
you know what I'm saying so I feel like
39:04
to anybody who feel like they they they
39:07
they want to get to that next level or
39:09
they want to keep going they just gotta
39:11
you know find that passion find that dog
39:13
that's what my dad called he called it
39:15
that dog the dog that passed you gotta
39:16
have that doggy like you're gonna bite
39:18
when it's time you know what I'm saying
39:20
like you gotta have that in you when you
39:21
get that and you should be straight and
39:23
you got to keep it going like that's all
39:25
it is Katie thank you for your question
39:27
uh make sure you get feed the streets
39:29
three it's available now okay
39:32
all right thank you thank you you're a
39:34
citizen towards give it give her that
39:36
torch Max in the ATL thank you torch hey
39:39
what up Max how you doing
39:41
hey what's good man how y'all doing
39:44
okay man we got Roddy rich in here
39:46
what's your question
39:47
yeah so I'm an engineer
39:51
um you know I work in mostly in the r b
39:54
circles and uh but you know I'm also a
39:57
producer on the side and I do that and
40:00
uh you know I it's just always
40:03
interesting to me to hear
40:05
what the similarities and the
40:08
differences are between
40:10
you know the the
40:12
[Music]
40:14
Studio live
40:17
from hip-hop artists and R B artists and
40:21
how it's so different and Roddy Roddy
40:25
has such a great crossover sound I know
40:27
he's been in the studio with some great
40:28
r b artists
40:30
um I just wanted to see like what his
40:32
perspective was on what he was looking
40:34
for in that kind of Realm
40:38
um and it was just trying to get his
40:40
Insight on what he looks for in a great
40:42
engineer and a great producer
40:47
wow uh great question Max so what do you
40:51
look for
40:53
no thank you like I mean I I work with a
40:57
lot of great great legendary r b artists
41:01
that like no I'm not I don't wanna I
41:04
don't want to put any names out there uh
41:07
okay I I I'll put I'll put one big name
41:11
out there and then you can deduct the
41:13
rest I I work with Keith Sweat regularly
41:16
um that's good yeah that's my man okay
41:18
yeah yeah all right so that's good
41:21
people but like other than that like I
41:24
just I just wanted to know like let's
41:26
see if we can let's let let him answer
41:27
we'll let him Master go ahead
41:29
I think um
41:31
you know when it comes to engineering
41:34
the first thing
41:35
that you gotta be
41:37
is in the studio before me
41:40
making sure everything is up the par
41:43
that's the first thing you could be the
41:45
Ross engineer ever but if you always
41:48
late or if you just yeah we don't that's
41:52
the first thing first okay so
41:54
professionalism professionalism that's a
41:57
good way to put it
41:59
um that's the first thing because hard
42:00
work be telling all the time if I can
42:02
call you and every I could depend on you
42:04
you good
42:06
um the second thing is sound expansion
42:08
you feel me I feel like the the thing
42:12
that
42:13
we have to we have to um
42:16
we have to do as artists are as
42:19
creatives we gotta like you know make
42:22
sure that even though I may I may do a
42:24
song like this you know in your downtime
42:27
in your spare time you should be
42:29
tweaking certain things or how did this
42:31
sound right how did that sound I mean
42:33
well I feel like it's all just about
42:35
just you know testing the waters and
42:36
just seeing what we can come up with
42:38
because it's art and at the end of the
42:40
day if we are getting a piece of the pie
42:42
we all you know making some shake then
42:45
you should definitely be chiming in on
42:47
different things of of of of like making
42:50
the product better you know what I'm
42:51
saying so those are really the two
42:53
things I look for it's nothing specific
42:55
because we really do a lot of different
42:57
types of music or we try to touch a lot
42:59
of different types of music and try to
43:01
figure it out so as long as you you're
43:03
professional and you ready to work and
43:06
you and your music is you know what I'm
43:08
saying your music IQ is up to par that's
43:10
what we got to look for because you got
43:12
to know the sounds you got to know all
43:13
that [ __ ] hey Max great question man
43:16
maybe you know yeah
43:19
maybe maybe you can work with them
43:21
no and I I appreciate that and I know
43:24
I'm sure I'm I I actually think that we
43:28
might have an opportunity to be working
43:30
together soon and that's why I was
43:33
really curious because I do [ __ ] with
43:36
Rowdy sound a lot and and I'm I'm very
43:38
excited uh to to get his opinion on that
43:42
and I appreciate that bro and when that
43:44
happens bring up that you talk to him on
43:46
Sway in the Morning Max you're a citizen
43:48
a sway in the morning there you go
43:50
towards give torch a round of applause
43:52
you got it all right uh give yourself
43:54
torch we got Christian on the line from
43:56
Oklahoma Christian what's your question
43:58
real quick
44:00
what's up soy I just want to say I'm a
44:03
big fan of the show and uh variety I
44:06
just wanted to ask that first project
44:09
that you truly packaged and and put out
44:12
to the world did you did you have an
44:15
approach when you first sat down with
44:18
the pen and paper or was it truly just
44:20
I'm gonna get in there I'm gonna pour my
44:22
heart out I'm gonna or I'm just gonna
44:23
have fun did it were you so in the
44:26
moment or did you kind of approach that
44:28
with uh this is my this is my first
44:30
message to the world I'm gonna truly
44:32
know what I'm gonna say before I'm gonna
44:34
say it
44:36
huh what project is we talking about
44:40
you talking about feed which project
44:42
the first three Industries
44:45
I'll go
44:47
uh yeah that was a long time I made my
44:51
first project when I was 17. yeah you
44:54
know I was still down there
44:56
in the woodwind that's awesome wait wait
44:58
hold up you were in the what
45:01
what I was still yeah I was still
45:06
wiggling and shaking yeah moving and
45:09
maneuvering I was still doing that so
45:10
it's like I really was just going to the
45:12
studio and rocking I feel like when I
45:15
the only when I started getting into the
45:17
process of actually making a project and
45:20
understanding music and everything that
45:22
was like feed the streets too when I
45:24
started understanding how to put a real
45:25
project together and figuring it out
45:28
and then you know it just it just went
45:31
on from there went off from there so
45:32
yeah
45:33
yeah that's what it was Christian thanks
45:35
for your call man you're a super citizen
45:36
I swear to take one more call all right
45:38
tyese go ahead real quick what's your
45:40
question for Roddy rich
45:42
how you doing today
45:44
what's going on how you feeling
45:46
everything's good um I'm just I
45:53
just aren't you how are you navigating
45:54
love and relationships or you know like
45:56
are you in a relationship or you have
45:58
someone special
46:00
hmm
46:05
she ain't talking to me
46:07
yeah I'm talking to you Roddy not Mr
46:10
sway
46:13
yeah people ask you that a lot I don't
46:16
know
46:19
it's cool I feel like uh you said you
46:22
said the first question was why do I
46:24
never find love
46:26
no how are you I'm not never finding it
46:28
I just know you know you're popular or
46:30
so every female that you meet is
46:33
probably like I love you you know I love
46:34
you I love you to know everything about
46:35
you because of you know the internet or
46:37
they think they do so how are you you
46:40
know tell the difference yeah between
46:42
like a fan a crazy fan or someone that's
46:45
really rocking with you
46:47
um okay that's a better way of asking
46:48
that yeah yeah okay all right that's
46:50
different all right um
46:52
I feel like you know it's all about
46:53
energy you know what I'm saying like
46:55
when you are observant person you can
46:58
kind of observe certain things like
47:00
through conversation through body
47:01
language through just different things
47:04
that you know come out of the situation
47:07
you can almost tell like okay she's this
47:10
way these females just other ways I got
47:13
a girl I was talking to and before I
47:16
ever could do anything I had to go meet
47:19
her mom and her daddy okay before I
47:21
could ever do anything ever anything I'm
47:24
talking about flyer anywhere Tech do
47:27
certain [ __ ] I had to go meet her mom
47:30
and her dad but you respected that
47:32
though right that was different yeah you
47:33
get what I'm saying so when you got
47:35
certain situations like that that's
47:37
that's you know and it's just all off
47:39
experience but that was definitely a
47:40
different situation so it's like you
47:43
know you that that's that's kind of how
47:46
you decipher it's just it's all about
47:47
energy and how how a person respect
47:50
theyself you know what I'm saying
47:52
certain times
47:54
thank you okay thank you for your
47:56
question and make sure you support the
47:58
project too okay all right thank you
48:01
guys Goods you're a citizen all right
48:03
Roddy rich man give this man a round of
48:06
applause for me a couple of things I
48:09
want to say
48:11
you're a beacon to like my brother
48:13
I understand your purpose appreciate it
48:15
I see it I get it I get it you keep
48:18
winning
48:19
I'm glad you confront everything head on
48:22
things people say that you have no power
48:24
over you your actions and these results
48:27
are where the power lies right right
48:29
your consistency in who you are as a
48:31
person as a man I hear it in your music
48:33
when I saw you wrote this letter
48:36
um to your fans been working hard on
48:38
feed the streets three album getting
48:40
back to my regular regimen and also
48:41
being happier than I've ever been in a
48:43
long time
48:44
that right there man I start applying
48:46
that I saw you right there because we
48:48
could get caught up in this [ __ ] right
48:50
there's a so-called industry right this
48:53
so-called culture right right and the
48:56
same people that bring you up be quick
48:57
to tear you down so you got to be solid
49:00
in yourself we need you to be come on
49:03
for all those people that you reaching
49:05
out to that see you able to do it don't
49:07
think they can do it but now they think
49:08
they can do it because you're doing it
49:10
we need that right appreciate you
49:11
absolutely letter to my son is a
49:14
powerful yeah song on this album yeah
49:17
and it's one of my favorites it's like
49:19
one of my favorites really yeah talk why
49:22
why which I mean odd for obvious reasons
49:24
but what about it makes it your face
49:26
it's the passion behind it and the
49:28
vulnerability behind it it's a very
49:30
vulnerable very just saying what I had
49:34
to say and the fact that I could talk to
49:37
my son I know not like now in in this in
49:40
this day and age in time
49:41
if anything you know what I'm saying
49:43
like I could talk to my son I ain't even
49:45
got to be here like that was like
49:48
that was a gift that music gave me now
49:51
all right you know what I'm saying and I
49:53
can't I can't never like forget like a
49:55
moment that this [ __ ] gave me and I
49:58
appreciate everybody for that like
50:01
I could talk to my son I ain't even
50:03
gonna be here like
50:04
he can turn it on
50:07
whenever and like hear what I'm I know
50:10
you can listen to all the music but when
50:12
I'm talking specifically to one person
50:15
like everybody can you know what I'm
50:18
saying everybody can uh
50:21
relate to it or feel it but like I'ma
50:25
just you know I was talking to one
50:27
person so it's like the fact that people
50:30
can feel that and [ __ ] with me on that I
50:32
appreciate it but like y'all gave me a
50:34
gift that I can you know I'm saying I
50:36
was like one of the best gifts music
50:38
could give me yeah man that's amazing
50:40
brother I appreciate it one of the lines
50:41
you said in there I'm paraphrased and I
50:43
can't remember it specifically but you
50:45
said something about I had to learn to
50:47
be real to myself sometimes it'll be
50:49
more real with you yeah yeah
50:52
come on man yeah real ones understand
50:54
that yeah that statement yeah and your
50:57
kids will make you real do you feel me
50:59
they keep they stop you from playing
51:00
yeah you gotta keep yeah yeah you gotta
51:02
you gotta stay
51:04
intact you know what I'm saying when you
51:06
got your little ones looking at you
51:07
congratulations brother I can't wait to
51:10
