0:00
is Tracy G the man is a Dancer too I
0:02
know this for a fact he's not just a
0:04
dancer he's a producer as well C he's
0:07
all purpose renissance guy and he's also
0:09
an educator you got to know what I'm
0:11
talking about to know who I'm talking
0:12
about Tracy G also a recording artist as
0:15
well um this man is somebody who I've
0:18
known since
0:20
2017 wow and we reached out each through
0:23
to through Instagram mhm well actually
0:25
we met at the Brooklyn The Hip Hop
0:28
festival and then we stayed in
0:31
communication uh from there he let me
0:33
know when he had merch and when he was
0:35
dropping music and he just kept in tune
0:37
with UNC you know what I mean and um
0:40
this dude is so gifted that I wanted to
0:43
invite him up he told me he was coming
0:44
to town I got I cannot let this
0:46
opportunity pass by the citizens have to
0:49
hear him they need to know his story uh
0:52
Po Folks aspiring artists has to hear
0:54
him they need to know his story right
0:56
and then plus I had to see him it's been
0:58
a while give it up for the and only
1:00
Malik dope ladies and gentlemen
1:04
Malik o that was a real drum roll oh man
1:08
we going to get some sound effects today
1:10
oh yeah Malik welcome to the show man
1:13
it's Malik do yes man hey thank y'all
1:15
for having me man you is a real one you
1:17
be out here in the field tin toes down
1:21
everywhere you know in the community and
1:23
just everywhere you know so thank you
1:25
for having me man I was like is he is he
1:27
serious is it going to be real I'm here
1:29
you here bro
1:30
thank it didn't take much at all huh n
1:33
just DM and then you just you a real one
1:35
that's all I can say yeah flesh and Bone
1:38
Brothers a few of us left in this game
1:40
just a few you know I had to put the
1:43
spotlight on you I I just feel like
1:46
you're a person who was born to perform
1:49
you know what I mean and and when you
1:51
hear him play and if you see how he
1:53
plays uh you'll understand what I'm
1:55
talking about even the music you've made
1:56
the albums you've done um in the past
1:59
you know I was like this guy really
2:02
loves to perform at what point in your
2:04
life did you know that this is what you
2:05
wanted to do um well I think probably so
2:10
I'm from DC right okay and you already
2:11
know we known for Go Go music I've been
2:14
you know you know you know about some go
2:15
go okayu Brown some bounce beat um and
2:19
then like really I started I was in
2:22
Howard University's drum line as well
2:23
shout out hu you know what I'm saying
2:24
you know my daughter is at grad school
2:26
at Howard right now oh yeah bless bless
2:30
so I'm a Howard Dad I just got to say
2:32
that that's a blessing I'm from Le Droid
2:33
Park I'm from that that area you're from
2:34
that area first Adams but um yeah I
2:38
started after like the band and stuff I
2:39
started street performing because I I
2:41
just wanted to get my sound my energy my
2:42
spirit out to the people I felt like
2:44
like you said that calling I felt
2:46
something cuz I would walk by after
2:47
practice and see people street
2:49
performing and I would like join with
2:50
the little brass bands or whatever and
2:52
then people was like rocking with like
2:54
hm so then he let me take it over to New
2:56
Orleans too right shout out to Super
2:58
Bowl and Kendrick too lit that was lit
2:59
but mhm I um I basically me and my mom
3:03
would go out to uh the Essence fest Jazz
3:05
Fest and all that and I I took my snare
3:07
drum out there and I was like that's a
3:10
place where they always Street perform
3:11
and always do that right and so next
3:13
thing you know I'm like I'm taking it
3:15
out there I'm 19 years old put that
3:17
drone on Canal Street and all that start
3:19
street performing 19 years old I made
3:20
like $200 I was like wow I went back
3:23
home I quit my job Home Depot overnight
3:25
stock and I just pursued street
3:27
performing I even like left the band
3:29
after a while cuz I'm like man I'm about
3:30
to speak to this whole world blessings
3:31
to the band blessings to everything go
3:33
go but I got to like speak to the
3:34
community to the whole everybody you
3:36
know and um that was my calling man
3:39
through street performing um and that
3:41
was like an AC of like not only
3:42
entrepreneurism but like community
3:45
service how how how break that down how
3:48
did you see it as community service
3:49
because like um DC is you know the
3:52
bucket drums the go go this on the Block
3:54
you know we came from like that the
3:55
roots and that that culture that
3:57
Afrocentric energy right and then um
4:00
just for me to be modern but still
4:01
respecting my elders um in that way I'm
4:04
doing that service in that way but also
4:06
there were youth that looked up to me to
4:09
uh go start street performing as well
4:10
and stuff and there's some youth that
4:12
were from like the hood and stuff right
4:14
and they you know they might just
4:16
looking for a meal or something so I'm
4:18
I'm distracting them from maybe robbing
4:20
somebody else or doing something crazy
4:22
getting their self in the wrong
4:23
situation so you know it's uh you know
4:26
Community Rehabilitation that community
4:29
rehabilit
4:30
I never because I always look at street
4:33
performers and wonder where the hell do
4:35
they live you know what I mean like like
4:38
where where does this dude live yeah
4:40
people think that maybe they're coming
4:42
from like trouble past sometimes there's
4:44
like stereotypes like almost adjacent to
4:47
those without homes and sometimes it is
4:49
that um and I was helping to break that
4:51
you know that that stigma of like you
4:53
know no like there people that I was
4:55
coming from I was living in my parents
4:56
basement at the time but you know it's
4:58
it's just a thing that culture that and
5:01
it's like yo it's free promotion like
5:03
even you know you ain't got to F no
5:05
taxes until you you know
5:08
I don't file no taxes but how you don't
5:10
know how many bills is in that bucket in
5:12
that hat right yeah so it's like you
5:14
know but um what was a good day for you
5:16
like in terms of what could you generate
5:17
on a good day man I remember in DC is a
5:20
little different than New York now New
5:21
York I got some numbers out here right
5:23
but um I remember one time was me and my
5:25
friend Damian right and we was
5:27
performing in like Maryland like Silver
5:28
Spring and we made like $1,200 man that
5:31
that helped him of course I I had some
5:33
money but you know we had like $1,200
5:36
and like uh he was able to pay his first
5:39
down payment on rent you know what I'm
5:40
saying off of the street performing you
5:42
know what I'm saying he was a little
5:43
older he in a different you know what
5:44
I'm saying so I'm like this is real
5:46
money that we can get um and that's
5:48
something that we would have been doing
5:49
in the house for free but would it be
5:51
daily like do every day like you know
5:53
what I mean like I could give a range of
5:55
like 200 to 400 200 just to be real how
5:59
did you like a lot of times when people
6:01
see folks on the street their first
6:03
impulse is to pass them up walk them by
6:05
they must be up to something right you
6:07
know it's always a frown how do you how
6:09
did you cope with the rejection of being
6:11
on the street well it's it's all mental
6:13
right and you have to become an
6:14
alchemist very very early you know you
6:17
have to use that energy and convert it
6:18
into something that's motivational um
6:21
you know even the parents or anybody
6:23
like that's not a real job I'm saying my
6:24
parent they've been supportive but
6:25
sometime they could be like all right
6:27
now but the goal was like you got to set
6:28
like some goals too I was like okay
6:30
first let me make sure I can pay my
6:31
phone bill off of this okay let me make
6:33
sure I can get something to eat off of
6:34
it like you work your way up and now
6:36
it's like you know I'm full time but I
6:38
don't Street perform anymore but I
6:39
started from there and it's just it was
6:41
mental you know I'm studying I'm looking
6:43
at you you know I call it YouTube
6:44
University right but um I'm looking and
6:47
I'm just like soaking up the stuff and
6:49
and also I was dressing like I was
6:51
already on the big stage already I saw
6:54
the vision be see that's important you
6:56
were dressing like you were already
6:59
where you want to be as his future self
7:01
yes yes so I spoke to my future self in
7:03
that way through my present uh you know
7:05
just you know promotion of myself wow
7:08
Malik dope is here let's give out your
7:10
social if people want to follow you how
7:12
can they follow you oh D just go
7:13
everywhere you know Malik dope just
7:15
everything Malik dope my website which
7:17
is my company is dope.com d o
7:21
pw.com and yeah we got you know this
7:24
music merging I'm going talk about some
7:25
stuff but yeah you know let's talk about
7:27
it all man cuz you you went from Street
7:29
performance to making your way to
7:30
America's Got Talent oh yes how did that
7:33
happen what was the day that it first
7:35
got initiated man I just know it was
7:37
like during like the beginning of the
7:39
pandemic you know what I'm saying I had
7:41
some some producers already been
7:42
scouting and everything you know and my
7:44
name being passed around through the
7:45
reals and then um yeah I sent them like
7:47
you know once they reach we built like a
7:49
producer I mean like built a a show deck
7:52
you know like of different videos and
7:53
all that and they sent it to the network
7:55
and they approved me I'm like it's doing
7:56
a pandemic so I'm like it's like I could
7:58
just be like on whatever trajectory I'm
8:00
on but or the pandemic I turned up you
8:04
know and so yeah I was like I'm supposed
8:07
to be here what was that process like
8:09
did you how manyan how many rounds did
8:10
you do I did so I did three shows which
8:12
is basically I made it semi-finals and
8:14
um which is very far for anybody from my
8:16
area DC that's that's done that and um
8:19
and I did it my way too like uh you know
8:21
of course they assigned your producing
8:23
all that stuff you you know you have a
8:24
team but I was able to breathe in in my
8:27
own skin of performance you know and you
8:30
know I'm talking about I drew the shows
8:31
out I drew the drums out on the white
8:33
computer paper with the pen I'm like
8:34
this how I want to do I want to come out
8:35
with the I want to like the sticks on
8:36
fire I want to slide down this I want to
8:38
do that I want you know what I'm saying
8:40
and they rock with it because the idea
8:41
was dope who was your coach um I I I
8:44
know I can't remember I I know I had a
8:46
producer named Alexa but I had uh this
8:48
guy named Tyrell um and he's a dope
8:51
dancer CU like they give you like like
8:54
coordination like he's a choreographer
8:56
and stuff he can dance with ush he can
8:58
dance with everybody you know and yeah
8:59
shout out Tyrell man you know what I'm
9:00
saying Tyrell latrina man they was they
9:02
was locking in with me they out west
9:04
side you know okay as Community Driven
9:06
as you are do you also have a spirit of
9:10
competition within you too always you
9:12
know we from drum line you know what I'm
9:13
saying you know but what do you mean we
9:15
from drum line you you come from that
9:18
lifestyle yeah I mean because like the
9:20
drum line it it's like it's not just
9:23
about drums it's like a whole lifestyle
9:24
and life is competition nature is
9:26
competition right don't you see them
9:27
lons hunting for that that gazelle they
9:29
like I'm getting him you know but yes
9:31
it's just naturally there competition
9:33
wise you know and uh um and also like
9:36
I'm a I'm a black belt first black belt
9:38
and shin Wu Kung Fu Dennis Brown okay so
9:42
I I was coupled with good part uh um
9:45
sportsmanship you know early like from
9:48
6:00 to 13 you know and um in that
9:50
discipline and also competing you know
9:52
getting kicked in the face kicking back
9:54
but also respecting your brothers and
9:55
sister in in that gym you know so um I
9:59
don't know if I'm like everybody but
10:00
that that grounded me enough to also
10:03
also uh compete in in the the stages of
10:06
life you know all right Malik dope is
10:08
here we got to get you to play some he
10:10
actually brought the the drum and and
10:13
while we're doing that I want to go on
10:14
the phone lines Jared is on the line 888
10:16
742
10:17
33445 Jared is from DC what up Jared hey
10:22
Jared hey hey Malik you knew I was going
10:24
to call you uh yeah you already know
10:26
brother
10:28
yeah y know look I just want to tell
10:30
y'all that
10:32
I yeah yeah I know I've known Malik
10:36
since since the days he was performing
10:38
in DC at Gallery Place where he used to
10:41
just be a street performer so I've
10:42
watched him go from being a street
10:45
performer to rock in a DC with everybody
10:48
going out of the country and then going
10:50
to America's Got Talent like man you're
10:52
awesome I'm so proud of you what you're
10:54
doing man he's he's a real one y'all
10:56
he's a real one all right that's what's
10:58
up man it's a pretty impressive because
11:01
to your point Jared to see him do all of
11:03
these things you kind of carve there's
11:04
no blueprint for this you know like
11:06
Quest love had the roots yes you know
11:08
what I mean different people came in in
11:10
a different way but the street performer
11:13
to reach these Heights is kind of
11:15
anomalous it's different right yeah yeah
11:18
I just had to really I you got to study
11:21
history and stuff too I'm talking about
11:22
I'm looking it Michael Jackson of course
11:24
Fred is stair or something or like you
11:27
know all the you know just drum drummers
11:30
from go go to Jazz to anything dancers
11:33
I'm looking at just entertainers seeing
11:35
how you know what I'm saying C Callaway
11:37
you know all these different stuff I'm
11:38
like putting it all together putting my
11:39
own formula on and my own coordinate a
11:42
swag on it and you yeah that's that's
11:44
what Jared you're a citizen man
11:47
appreciate your call all right um this
11:49
is what I want to do we're going to play
11:51
a song off of your album life being yeah
11:54
yeah light being yes yes and uh light
11:57
being I'm sorry I apologize and we're
11:58
going to play the song Elevate okay okay
12:02
you got a video coming for Elevate right
12:04
so um to all of y'all listening I have a
12:06
video coming soon for the song elevated
12:08
I shot it in Egypt at the pyramids I
12:11
almost got locked up for that you know
12:13
you know they don't play out there not
12:14
at all I was with my good peoples and I
12:16
was representing some positive you know
12:18
so they was like all right they let me
12:19
rock but yeah I shot it right at the
12:21
pyramids this ain't no green screen y
12:22
I'm right in the sands for real you know
12:24
so it's coming out like next month next
12:27
month okay this is Malik dope it's
12:28
called Elevate off the light being album
12:31
he's going to come back and play Live
12:32
shave
12:35
45 light being that's Elevate brand new
12:38
well it's not brand new but got a new
12:40

you cannot get him off you cannot get
13:31

15:11

15:13
in it it's is a oh wow this is a a very
15:16
spiritual piece you know what I'm saying
15:17
that I build straight from like scratch
15:19
through my journey wow and your tattoos
15:21
they all significant you got chords
15:23
notes yeah I got my logo so this is my
15:26
percussion brand definition of
15:27
percussion entertainment which acronym
15:29
dope and then this is my my brand dope
15:32
way which is my multimedia production
15:35
and Consulting agency you know what I'm
15:36
saying so I'm like you know we out here
15:38
doing it you know what I'm saying I'm
15:39
trying to uh sign a scientist I'm trying
15:41
to sign the person that's going to heal
15:42
us I'm trying to sign yeah you know what
15:44
I'm saying I'm trying to tap in like
15:45

16:08
what's up this I had a I did a signature
16:11
drumstick a signature marching drumstick
16:13
deal with one of the top drum uh drum
16:16
manufacturers and stuff like that called
16:17
Vic f um and these are the Malik dope
16:20
chop X1 Signature Series sticks they are
16:23
now discontinued but I had to like get
16:26
one out the Vault for sway one time and
16:27
I signed them right here
16:29
say stay dope sway that's like Hank
16:31
Aaron's bat yeah and um I'm the also I'm
16:36
the I'm the first and only uh melanated
16:38
percussionist from the DMV area to have
16:41
their own marching
16:43
drumstick okay sway we we got to see
16:46
what sway got some beats you know what
16:48
to do with that
16:49
sway okay hold on that we we going to
16:51
get busy real quick play with me right
16:53
there so you don't get bus those S need
16:55
to come with drum lessons too oh they
16:57
look look he just did it they already
16:59
supercharged come on that's in my
17:01
melanin okay don't have me tap in So
17:03
yeah so another thing is I got some some
17:05
gifts um well not a gift uh it's a a
17:09
product that soon will be a gift I'll
17:10
send this to you as well what is this so
17:12
this um ladies and gentlemen boys and
17:14
girls all my people for one I'm just
17:17
going to talk about intellectual
17:18
property it's very important when we
17:19
think of dope uh ideas and stuff like
17:22
that especially throughout history we've
17:24
been slighted we done created all types
17:25
of stuff through our history you know
17:27
what I'm saying that we haven't got our
17:29
right patent protections rights we had
17:31
stuff stolen from us bro so I made an
17:35
idea um for a a drumstick holder that
17:37
you can wear right on your belt loop and
17:40
um you know just identity wise
17:42
culture-wise and just utility wise this
17:45
is called a sticket this is my apparel
17:47
brand that's dropping this month well
17:49
just I just already dropped it but like
17:50
this is the first piece this is the
17:52
accessory it's called a stick it and how
17:54
this works is of course you'll clip it
17:56
you know that little clip right your
17:57
belt buckle
17:59
your bag you know what I'm saying but
18:01
then you stick it right in there boom
18:03
boom you know what I'm saying and that's
18:05
a conversation
18:07
starter stuck what he did is he stuck um
18:10
each each the sticker provides a way
18:12
where you can hang your drumsticks so
18:14
you ready this like nunchuck it's like
18:15
your sword you know draw MRA we ain't
18:17
doing stick bags no more we ready like
18:19
somebody want to chop like uh bow pop it
18:21
out and also got the one that's for the
18:22
marching sticks and then I got the other
18:24
one for the uh drum set sticks which a
18:27
lot of people you know the SK ones they
18:29
they play their their drum sets you know
18:31
what I'm saying so you pop it in as well
18:33
this one she a little more fresher so I
18:34
got to so okay and you did it like that
18:37
and so those are a little thinner so
18:38
marching band sticks are typically more
18:41
thicker than than the regular drum set
18:43
sticks right and then how important are
18:45
the sticks like can anybody pick up any
18:49
great drummer use any sticks um it just
18:52
depends on preference but it's just like
18:54
the camera it's not the camera it's the
18:56
shooter you know so it ain't the stick
18:58
it's the it's the player get your
19:00
fundamentals get your rudiments up get
19:01
your knowledge up you know what do you
19:03
think uh who are like if I said who are
19:05
the top three drumming entertainers
19:08
right now contemporary who would you say
19:10
wow and I'll just throw some names out
19:11
there if if make uh Anderson pack OH
19:15
Anderson pack bless us to Anderson pack
19:17
I met him one time at Eric Badu's uh
19:19

20:32
inspired me people are modernly doing
20:34
some stuff and like just adding a little
20:36
