Jason Martin: From Problem to Film Mogul (EXCLUSIVE) | SWAY’S UNIVERSE

0:00
rightfully
0:01
so cuz DJ Quick is a juggernaut he's an
0:05
icon DJ Quick is yes yes he's
0:10
legendary this dude DJ Quick is in the
0:13
DNA of all hip-hop if you ask me
0:15
especially coming from the West Coast
0:17
because What DJ Quick was able to do is
0:20
perfect his engineering ear we talk
0:23
often about the way Dr Dre's music is
0:25
mixed and mastered rightfully so because
0:28
he's a perfectionist but you should know
0:30
about DJ Quick and what he does in the
0:33
mixing and mastering Studio what he does
0:35
as a music producer and what he does as
0:37
an MC so DJ Quick can't wait to have you
0:41
up here so we can give you your proper
0:42
flowers man shout out to DJ Quick yes
0:46
yes now last time I saw this man I was
0:49
calling him by a different name right we
0:52
all were so I got to reintroduce myself
0:55
to this person because we ain't met like
0:57
this yet you know what I mean man has
1:00
been on my show many of times he's been
1:02
on our show we've had amazing
1:04
conversations with him um his track
1:07
record from understand me to Rose cray
1:09
EP all the way down to a Compton story
1:12
and his new project has always been
1:15
consistent he's one of the illest MC's
1:18
in my opinion Revolution to come out of
1:20
the uh the Southland if you will in a
1:23
long time man it's a group of elite MC's
1:25
we have West Coast Boogie up here you
1:27
know I put him in the same Cate in terms
1:30
of dudes who are just cracking syllables
1:33
similes metaphors and dissecting that
1:37
pocket in the unusual way you formally
1:39
knew him as problem but I'm bringing
1:41
them here today as the one and only
1:43
Jason Martin is here that now now that's
1:47
the intro W thank you so much I
1:49
appreciate that got personal with you
1:51
man I appreciate he does he does that
1:53
better than anybody that I must say it's
1:55
just like you know thank you re it's
1:58
just it's all firing sway you got it
2:00
yeah I see a lot of people out there
2:01
doing it and I want to encourage them to
2:02
continue to do so that's right you'll
2:04
get better and better every time you got
2:06
to give them something that take some
2:07
time though yeah you know it's a bar
2:09
I'mma put the bar down because we give
2:12
ourselves we're giving each other
2:14
flowers now but we've been giving
2:17
flowers since we first came on the radio
2:19
in the early 90s right and always
2:22
thought it was important cuz nobody else
2:24
would and so I want to commend you
2:27
because I've been watching you do your
2:29
tour and you bring up names that people
2:31
don't bring up when you listen to this
2:33
song oh who oh let me Jason Martin is
2:35
here did I
2:37
do up say it again though say it again
2:40
thank you and thank you guys for having
2:42
me no thank you man cuz you talk about
2:44
easy eat yeah and then when I look at
2:47
your gloves I Easy E and ruthless radio
2:50
DJ Revolution keing Tech and I used to
2:52
do our show remember we come up to the
2:55
beat and e e and Julio G and all those
2:57
guys were there at the grimy grimy spot
3:00
at the grimy spot and I feel like e
3:02
don't get enough props and wait hold up
3:05
Jason Martin your phone ringing yeah
3:07
yeah that's for you I think that's for
3:08
you who we got on the phone right now
3:09

3:10
DJ hello hello yeah who who is this man
3:14

3:29

3:32
going on yo poo when you coming up here
3:35

3:37
you already know man I just said hey
3:44
po that's your invite the word was
3:47
said hey P all you got do is say the
3:50
word I'm up there come on now all right
3:53
hey P what you working on man and how
3:55
come you and Jason Martin are so close
3:57
what is it about this kid you love man
4:00
man I love PR man he he one of the
4:02
younger cats man that just brought me
4:04
back man inspired me man in ways man you
4:07
know I I come and sit down with that
4:09
dude at the crib he come sit down with
4:10
me and we just chop it up man I just I
4:13
just took a real lik in the problem man
4:15
he's W to real cats this just super
4:17
creative and that dude is a filmmaker
4:19
too man I don't know how many people
4:20
really get that about that dude but he a
4:22
filmmaker too bro Hing wow man a
4:25
filmmaker that's a lot I got chills
4:27
going through my body thanks P my
4:30
I'm only telling the truth bro I see
4:32
that eye I see how you get out I see the
4:34
movement man I see the hustle I love it
4:37
DJ po man when we talk about filmmakers
4:39
you one of the first people to come from
4:41
our culture to even tackle that industry
4:43
you know with uh film writing films
4:45
being a playright in making films man so
4:48
salute to you man that I I feel like
4:51
I've been real blessed way a way to to
4:54
have traveled in and every medium that
4:56
hip hop has presented itself bro like I
4:59
have really have got a chance to get
5:01
behind the DJ you know turntables and
5:04
and cut some [ __ ] up I got you know
5:07
what I'm saying get you know get in
5:09
there as a producer man and work with
5:11
some of the best of them man and then uh
5:13
in terms of writing and film stuff man I
5:15
mean that that I had a blessing man with
5:17
that to be able to work with with some
5:19
of the best in that area too man and
5:21
then on top of that I'm doing some work
5:23
now a problem I'm over here working on
5:25
this game stuff man I work with Rockstar
5:27
man GTA stuff yeah we cook hop has all
5:31
those man and I feel blessed to have
5:33
been able to represent it hopefully I'm
5:35
doing the best job I can man but hip hop
5:38
is everywhere bro so I just I'm there
5:40
with it wait hold up did he just reveal
5:42
something right now what what are you
5:43
doing with GTA uh what P I'm have I'mma
5:46
have Jason answer that y'all didn't know
5:48
he is GT no I know he is but you said
5:50
we're
5:51
cooking well it's broken up I didn't
5:53
hear anything I didn't hear anything I'm
5:55
hitting you I'm hitting you
5:57
later up H up what wait a minute he hook
6:01
up the exclusive was dropped we got to
6:04
get out of here we got to you see how
6:05
that works give it up for DJ P out nah
6:09
man [ __ ] that you don't set it now man
6:12
listen already out there man I don't
6:14
know anything about Jason you said we're
6:16
cooking some stuff up no I said we're
6:19
cooking as a coast meaning he's doing
6:21
some big things I'm doing some great
6:22
things y'all are back over here we're
6:25
cooking like weird oh oh yeah I'm still
6:28
a veteran now y like get me that's
6:30
deflection man that's good deflection
6:32
good deflection we've been through
6:33
enough therapy to know what that is
6:35
excellent shout out to my dog that was
6:38
great C morning terce calling this must
6:40
be West Coast ter ter Martin yeah that's
6:43
my brother pick it up man got I got
6:47
stuff to do talking I'm here with sway
6:50
okay that's about you you know what I'm
6:52
saying you he rerouted us yo but what I
6:56
think is great I feel like especially
6:58
being from the West Coast is it you know
7:01
with with the recent pop out concert and
7:04
the movement the energy the motion
7:06
that's taking place you starting to see
7:08
more people more open to unification
7:10
right which is something we've always
7:12
said should happen but would you do
7:14
differently you know unification isn't
7:17
just hooking up with everybody that's
7:18
hot now right what you do differently DJ
7:22
poo you wearing these gloves we going to
7:25
come back to that and that's something
7:26
Easy E was really the first person I
7:29
knew
7:30
constantly walk around with gloves you
7:31
remember the red we used to see them
7:32
right at every day we would see every
7:34
weekend we would see them um Terence
7:36
Martin you know that's more of this
7:38
generation but what is is it the
7:40
connection between those who came before
7:42
you and now seem to be important you're
7:44
keeping the names going with DJ quick as
7:47
well is that on purpose totally I'm a
7:50
fan I'm a fan of the sport I'm um these
7:53
people are the reason I'm here like I
7:55
grew up watching their movies listening
7:56
to their music studying their moves and
7:59
like uh once you become with they deem
8:02
appear um my fandom doesn't leave it's
8:05
just now I have access to them so
8:07
instead of like treating like photo op
8:10
or anything like that I get really
8:12
candid I'll hit pool and just ask
8:14
questions yeah I'll just ask like every
8:16
question I want to ask if I'm working on
8:18
some stuff some script stuff or I'm
8:20
trying to develop stuff I'm going to
8:21
call the guy that I saw do it first from
8:24
my genre like P Cube all those guys were
8:28
the first ones to like produce and
8:30
direct a film it's one thing to star in
8:32
it but to put it together with your own
8:34
bread and your own scratch and your own
8:36
ideas is a whole another monster so I'll
8:38
call him and then with quick I mean once
8:40
I was able to get that access I done
8:42
bugging the hell out of him how did you
8:43
get the access to him well through terce
8:45
Martin terce Martin brought me in to
8:47
work on Snoop projects okay so once that
8:50
collaboration happened they end up
8:51
bringing in quick to mix an album so for
8:53
6 months I was around DJ Qui out of
8:56
nowhere um just out of nowhere every day
8:59
and so with us both being from the same
9:01
part of the city he just grabbed me up
9:03
was like oh you The Confident kid you
9:05
coming with me and I just hold on to
9:07
those relationships you know what I'm
9:08
saying I tap in when it ain't music time
9:10
what's up how the people doing genuine
9:13
though this is not like you're not just
9:14
asking them about music you talking
9:16
about life nah cuz I want to understand
9:18
how you guys were able to stay you guys
9:20
were the first generation of this thing
9:22
like I I feel like I was a part of the
9:24
second so you guys had to like not
9:27
really crash test but y'all had to go to
9:29
the ends and now what hip hop when they
9:31
didn't know it was going to be here the
9:32
business of it when it got taken from
9:35
you guys and then got exploited and then
9:37
like how we came through and saw like
9:39
okay we got to create our own companies
9:40
we got to own our own stuff we got to do
9:42
this so what what's the tips what can I
9:45
learn and then musically if they ever
9:46
need anything it's coming back in 24
9:49
hours just like that oh for sure what
9:51
what what and I mean this with
9:54
wholeheartedly with the most genuine way
9:57
I can say this what what what are some
9:59
of the things you learn sitting with
10:01
quick and and Snoop oh with quick um I
10:04
learn to always be dangerous musically
10:09
okay never try to fit in if if if it's
10:11
too clean dirty it up if it's too dirty
10:13
clean it up go to opposite at all times
10:16
always be free if you want to do a 12
10:18
minute song do a 12 minute song do not
10:20
do not try to conform to this thing
10:22
because then you lose what you are in
10:23
your sound so for that for sure he keeps
10:26
that in my brain like yeah that sound
10:28
too much like something else Chang that
10:31
he's going to keep me dangerous as far
10:33
as with Snoop he just taught me how to
10:35
deal with people like he's a superstar
10:39
so he he he's like enjoy your celebrity
10:42
don't be one of the people that just
10:43
just hide from him man you really worked
10:45
hard enjoy it smile talk to these people
10:48
that love you man cuz a lot of people
10:50
wish they had these opportunities you
10:51
had um him and whiz are like that they
10:54
they're constantly like n man take some
10:56
time for yourself and enjoy the fact
10:58
that you made it to this spot where
10:59
you're one of the elite guys out here in
11:01
the city it's tough to be so for sure I
11:04
love this man Jason Martin is here um at
11:07
what point did you decide to I know
11:10
everybody's asking you for about your
11:12
name change but this sound like
11:14
something that's probably was you was
11:16
sitting with for a second but at what
11:18
point did you make the definitive
11:19
decision to change your name and why uh
11:22
I was going to change it in 2016 or 17
11:25
one of them but um I honestly I got
11:28
talked out of
11:30
um but when I when I um got to the point
11:33
where I think it was the pandemic and
11:35
then I was just kind of watching
11:36
everything and then my my daughters are
11:37
getting older I got daughter graduated
11:40
from college I got one that's third year
11:41
in college right now my children they
11:43
I'm raising women it's a different kind
11:45
of situation so I'm like man your dad
11:48
ain't problem it's just the name it's
11:49
something about a name you know um and
11:52
then my father you know I want him to
11:54
see his last name everywhere for a
11:56
second that's beautiful you know what
11:57
I'm saying I want I want my grandma to
11:59
see Martin all over the place before she
12:01
passed I want to get that opportunity
12:03
and then if you just want to go business
12:05
I mean only thing better than own one
12:07
apartment building is two so I mean I'll
12:10
just battle myself battle yourself who
12:13
wi that battle problem or Jason Martin
12:15
well they both go the same bank account
12:16
so
12:18
technically right they partners with the
12:20
same te you know what I'm saying I'm not
12:22
one of them you know guys like I don't
12:23
want to do my old [ __ ] run it up I'll
12:25
I'll perform that with the new stuff I
12:27
don't mind that because again was able
12:29
to share the ownership with my stuff so
12:31
I don't see it the same way yeah you're
12:33
still the same artist you just adjusted
12:35
the name just adjusted the name I'm not
12:37
about to walk in here with the Open Toe
12:39
sandals and you know the Kies and things
12:41
people thought I was about to be they
12:43
thought I was about to transform my look
12:46
yeah like I'm about to start looking
12:46
like common n that's
12:48
not nah n it's still up I'm still having
12:51
a good time it's going to be a little
12:52
different but I just I just when when I
12:54
saw Jason Martin I'm like bro that's
12:57
that's my name so big much rather that
13:00
and I feel like it also makes sense with
13:01
you being a filmmaker as well like us
13:04
speaking to Pooh and him giving you that
13:06
type of compliment mentioning that
13:09
you're a
13:10
multi-hyphenate what Drew you into film
13:13
making obviously the tie is storytelling
13:16
but what is it specifically about the
13:18
visuals the script writing and film
13:20
making that feels like a full body yes
13:22
for you I think it's just creating like
13:24
just wanting to expand on creation um
13:28
I've grew up just watching movies TV and
13:31
I know like they had people try to send
13:33
me to go read for for stuff and and it
13:36
just a lot of rejection I'm like this is
13:38
stupid like they're telling me to go
13:40
read for parts for competent guys and
13:43
they're telling me I'm not that guy comp
13:46
enough this is crazy I think I should
13:48
just write my own and see what it feels
13:50
like so um I just went through the steps
13:54
I I jotted it it definitely wasn't as uh
13:57
as pretty as some of the other Scripts
13:59
different things we didn't have the shot
14:00
list and things from my first film but I
14:03
just went out there and just did it man
14:04
I called up some favors and U my first
14:06
film comp this story got my gaps on that
14:09
so that's crazy because I happen to just
14:11
be in the studio with Mike and key shout
14:13
out to them and Big D and Mike was
14:16
working on a rap something at the time
14:18
he was like bro I need you to write some
14:20
stuff for me I'm like for show could you
14:21
do something for me though she's like
14:23
what he's like man I just need you to
14:24
narate this short I got he's like man
14:26
pull it up and he literally we pull it
14:28
up and he freak styled the movie Down
14:30
did he what yeah the the accomp story he
14:34
Frey the whole script he watched it and
14:37
I he's like what's going to happen here
14:38
I'm like I'm going to do this he he saw
14:39
something he was like all right all
14:40
right move out I got on tape he just was
14:42
like he just oh this is Jason Mar Mo
14:45
like yo this is crazy wow that ain't
14:48
easy to you know I mean Mike is an
14:50
incredible guy you know what I'm saying
14:52
true he's exceptional but I watched him
14:54
do that in like literally 45 minutes I
14:56
was in awe that it was even happening
14:59
so it was that and then like with Sno we
15:01
were you know we we work a lot uhuh and
15:04
I'm like man I'm working on something
15:06
he's like man I got about 30 minutes cuz
15:07
just bring the camera down and it just
15:09
did it yeah man I was gung-ho with it so
15:12
then when I pieced it all together I
15:13
called P up had him come down to the
15:15
crib and I just had him watch it I'm
15:16
like bro please I want you to redline
15:18
this thing like crazy tear it up tell me
15:20
everything that's wrong and he watched
15:22
it and he was like [ __ ] it's about right
15:26
really gave me a couple of changes and I
15:27
just did them I sent them back and I was
15:30
like oh and then here we go let me tell
15:32
you get that a round of applause cuz
15:34
that's that's some master networking ABS
15:37
utilizing your resources M This Is
15:40
Bigger Than Rap and and to other artists
15:43
that are tuned in are people in the game
15:45
look what he did he tapped into his
15:47
resources and Incorporated included all
15:50
of these iconic figures yeah Snoop DJ po
15:55
Mike EPS punch from TDE yeah so I I end
15:59
up calling him because this is during
16:00
the pandemic when we were work I had it
16:02
done like right before it started but I
16:05
had it and so I call punch like me and
16:07
punch punch is like one of the smartest
16:09
Americans ever created like we're not
16:11
going say RPP or anything he's just he
16:13
just sees it different he got baru and
16:15
he can go and he can go so we're talking
16:18
pun scared to come wrap up here but
16:20
other than that oh I'll give him a a
16:23
going to make damn K when I leave
16:27
challeng punch is scared to come wrap up
16:29
here but other than that you're
16:30
intimidating figure he's a ill I will
16:33
say I'm nice as F I'm not saying that
16:35
the the the brand of you guys yeah
16:38
there's a standard here there is a
16:40
standard and we're not compromising it
16:41
so don't bring no whack [ __ ] up here and
16:43
if y'all scared to rap cool stand
16:45
outside don't worry Jason you good today
16:48
thank you thank you thank you thank you
16:49
I'm did I'm I'm good you're good today I
16:51
got to I ain't never interviewed Jason
16:52
Martin right you know this is my first
16:56
time I don't know how Jason Martin rap I
16:59
don't
17:00
know Jason Martin memory is fried so
17:02
we'll have to have it like kind of
17:03
scrolling but we we we'll get it
17:05
together we got we get a prompted for
17:06
you next time but no Punchy uh I called
17:08
him like bro what where do you know
17:09
anybody I can take this or Distributors
17:12
and stuff you guys have every plug in
17:14
the book he was like let me make a call
17:16
then he put me on the phone some people
17:17
from tile and then they was able to
17:18
debut it on tile when I first dropped it
17:21
um so yeah man I was like man anybody
17:24
that helps me gets a credit and gets a
17:26
percentage too like I don't do the the
17:28
like you give me something and that's it
17:30
business yeah so my business we we we do
17:32
Fair exchange so I love that I made him
17:35
EP for just helping me move it around
17:37
and get some other things and eyes on it
17:38
there you go man I like that Jason
17:40
Martin man I he this guy is nice hting
17:43
problem I like
17:45
this having a better time with you man
17:48
problem be causing [ __ ]
17:50
problems I to get rid that [ __ ] no more
17:53
beefs Jason Martin doesn't get in no
17:54
beefs not at all yeah I hated problem
17:57
beefs I'm scared as hell I see something
17:59
going on I'm running bro I'm going the
18:01
whole other way like look at them [ __ ]
18:02
over there I'm getting the hell out of
18:03
here man come on who was it that came up
18:05
here uh zo zo Z Sama said the moment
18:08
somebody say oh God or oh my mama it's
18:12
time to
18:13
leave I mysteriously have to use the
18:15
bathroom at that point just like that
18:18
got the bathroom you got daughters too
18:20
man like I got a daughter so when my
18:22
daughter was born it it softened me up
18:25
I'm I don't want to fight because I
18:27
never wanted to see her see me after a
18:30
fight or if I was to you know something
18:31
that's true I don't want you don't want
18:33
your kids to see any of that right I
18:36
would hate them to see me with a busted
18:37
lip I wouldn't even know how to explain
18:39
that to my little Jordy Bor she would
18:41
lose her mind could you imagine that no
18:44
I could not I wouldn't even know what to
18:45
say and you're their first hero man it's
18:48
crazy and I'm their first bank too
18:50
they're like professional beggar them
18:52
little [ __ ] got man they I think they
18:54
go in another group chat and like kind
18:55
of gather together on when to ask for
18:58
what crazy it's timing is
19:00
impeccable it never overlaps no it's
19:03
like they know like okay you okay I'm
19:05
about to ask for this car okay I'm about
19:06
to ask re shoes or I'm about to like
19:08
[ __ ] what's up with y'all especially
19:10
after that show when like you would
19:12
think they thought I was Kendrick they
19:13
got paid that day we're talking about
19:16
the pop out show you was in friend was
19:20
different budget I'm happy to be there
19:21
though that wasn't a pay thing right
19:23
people came fre let tell let me tell you
19:25
something about um PG Langan they make
19:28
sure everybody everybody got paid really
19:30
that's a real boss I didn't I I didn't
19:33
know it I didn't know I definitely I'd
19:35
have paid him to come yeah but nah so
19:38
everybody got paid and we and we had to
19:40
and we donated half our half of our pay
19:43
to charity of our choice Beau that was
19:45
in Compton anywhere any charity we
19:47
picked oh everybody got to choose their
19:50
own charity yeah wow okay break down PG
19:52
Lang PG Lang is Kendrick Lamar and Dave
19:55
free new company there it is come on man
19:57
hey y'all want me to do y'all n Brothers
20:01
hey them brothers them brothers showed
20:02
you how business Works they always been
20:05
thorough though and and and salute to
20:08
Kendrick um for doing something that
20:11
needed to be done on the west coast when
20:13
not there's a song called um a quick me
20:16
message yeah on this album and it's DJ
20:18
Quick I think drama produc it no he
20:20
didn't produce quick producer yeah DJ
20:23
Drama kind of intro outro him and and it
20:26
and in it RAV this is interesting quick
20:28
is talking about he calls out double XL
20:31
I don't know what happened what they did
20:33
but apparently they didn't include him
20:34
in something he felt he should have been
20:36
included in and he was like why why
20:37
would you it's like you're trying to
20:39
erase you know my history right and it's
20:43
a clip of that and we see a lot of that
20:46
right it's a lot of history that doesn't
20:48
get tagged properly and what it is
20:50
you're a filmmaker uh these platforms
20:52
are doing content grabs yeah so it
20:54
doesn't matter if it's thorough or not
20:57
or if it's accurate or not if it's
20:58
sequence properly it just matter if you
21:00
finish the project and put it out cuz
21:02
that's how they going to make their
21:03
streaming money but let me ask you this
21:06
rev you joining this Jason all right
21:08
well Jason I'm because he's doing very
21:10
well at incorporating history but what
21:12
happens when our history gets erased I
21:15
mean things start to go funky because it
21:17
happened with the the the DJ in hip-hop
21:20
okay you know it was always intertwined
21:23
you know when the the DJ came up the MC
21:25
producer and everyone around the DJ came
21:27
up and when the m started to be the
21:29
Superstar they brought the DJs along and
21:31
the producers everyone had somebody in
21:33
their corner and when that starts to
21:35
separate everything becomes this little
21:37
sub genre a little subculture so you
21:40
don't see a lot of DJs in all the
21:42
mainstream media other than what you see
21:44
on Instagram as like people's notion of
21:47
what a DJ is that's not really what it
21:49
is and I'm sure you you know it can go
21:51
all over the place for the all of
21:53
hip-hop it just we it separates you know
21:57
when you don't have that somebody in
21:58
there that's asking questions of a
22:00
legend you know like when I got with you
22:02
guys I start I just sat back and watched
22:03
and soaked it up because I was like I'm
22:05
about to get a crash course and these
22:08
are the guys that have all the answers
22:10
to the questions that I got and you know
22:12
we just having a lot of fun but if you
22:14
don't have that connection I can't ask
22:16
you or you can't ask poo and you you
22:18
know you're not being a tribute to what
22:20
put you where you are then that is a
22:22
serious default that's a detriment to
22:24
the culture absolutely right and so I I
22:27
want to commend um Kendrick too yourself
22:31
for the way you're moving because I
22:32
think this is how that West Coast stay
22:34
elevated has to happen together we got
22:36
to be galvanized but seeing all those
22:40
I'm glad I witnessed I wish I could have
22:41
been there I could have been there but I
22:43
wanted to witness it cuz I I felt like
22:46
this is LA's moment the Southlands
22:48
moment as a whole you know and for him
22:50
to bring those folks together I know
22:52
you've been asked this but moving
22:54
forward how do you sustain this energy
22:56
how do how do the West Coast keep his
22:59
frequency going in your opinion I
23:01
actually asked like I just asked him and
23:05
I asked ter and the answer was really
23:07
clear man um keep pushing the line
23:10
musically uh and don't get on these
23:12
interviews saying nothing stupid about
23:14
somebody else word damn that was pretty
23:17
damn simple there that's a good
23:19
prescription you mean all these decades
23:21
we've been trying to figure this [ __ ]
23:22
out you just got it right here you boil
23:24
it down after a while it all gets boiled
23:26
down to a couple of bullet points and
23:28
those are pretty good yeah don't get on
23:29
here don't disrespect nobody on these
23:31
mics and on these cameras and and keep
23:33
pushing your line musically and
23:34
everything going to be all right do what
23:36
do we have as a responsibility being the
23:39
broadcasters the Platformers you know do
23:42
you feel like I mean I know artists you
23:44
kind of feel beholden to these platforms
23:46
because we got all these followers and
23:48
it's fan base and it's the only way to
23:50
kind of one of few ways to get your U
23:54
not a many ways to get your music and
23:55
your word out but what responsibility do
23:58
the pod cters and the broadcasters have
24:00
or do they have any um I I mean I
24:03
wouldn't want to put all that on that
24:05
you know I think each station each
24:08
podcast each person has his own kind of
24:11
Niche crowd yeah you know I think just
24:14
be be open to things that aren't in your
24:16
crowd if it walks past you um I talked
24:20
to the the pediac um KDAY recently the
24:24
PD Power PD 92 and I said you guys got
24:28
us in a pickle now I'm one of them
24:30
people that still my songs still come on
24:31
the radio my older stuff so I don't
24:33
really have this issue but I'm speaking
24:34
for everybody else I'm like well kayday
24:37
well when is the old nipy hustle records
24:38
going to start coming on when is the old
24:40
Tyler Creator record like when are we
24:41
going to get integrated in that thing
24:43
that goes on here you know what I'm
24:45
saying and then for I'm talking to be
24:47
real I'm like when is what if he drops a
24:49
new album why can't y'all scratch that
24:51
in after his his classic that y'all play
24:54
we can't just keep like classifying okay
24:57
this is for the brand new this is for
24:59
the older and this is for the worldwide
25:01
it's like then we cut ourselves short
25:04
we're from here bro so when we take
25:06
these numbers elsewhere and they see
25:07
that the house is not supporting why
25:09
would you get New York to support why
25:11
would you get Atlantic to support why
25:13
would you get Chicago to support I get
25:15
it it's analytics it's numbers it's
25:16
still a business but at the end of the
25:18
day I want to hear California in
25:22
California period it's it's not I don't
25:24
want to hear nobody else either and I
25:26
think it's not against anybody is just
25:29
Pro us and I think that is the
25:31
responsibility I want the West Coast not
25:33
just La just the West Coast in general
25:36
like at least give us 40% of the station
25:39
agree Jason Martin I like that you know
25:41
at at least at at the very least about
25:44
40 that's that's that would be amazing
25:47
if that could happen be amazing if you
25:48
did it least we fought all those same
25:50
battles man like going into the a PD's
25:52
office like you know how many times you
25:54
argue with a PD or Tech went in there to
25:57
battle and you know all the DJs you know
26:00
were in there trying to get somebody to
26:01
play a record and do exactly the things
26:03
that you're talking about and it's not
26:05
easy and it's amazing that you've been
26:07
paying attention this whole time as
26:08
you've come up from Ground Zero that
26:11
you've been scoping it out because a lot
26:12
of artists don't and they just they
26:14
disappear or they have you know their
26:16
business go sideways later on in life so
26:18
it's it's awesome to see a younger
26:19
person be you know paying attention to
26:22
all these Jewels just get dropped
26:23
everywhere we have Bonafide Mega stars
26:26
from here you know what I'm saying you
26:27
got Billy you got Tyler Creator you got
26:29
Kendrick you got doat you got a lot of
26:31
people that's really from Los Angeles
26:34
that you can't tell me um you can't play
26:36
yeah like I don't hear Tyler the Creator
26:38
on the radio and that's crazy to me he's
26:41
incredible cuz when he walks out you see
26:42
what happens the whole Arena went
26:44
Bonkers it's that's crazy to me and
26:46
that's no fault I I I don't know the
26:48
reason why I'm just telling you what I
26:50
see yeah um like when we do these
26:52
playlists I was talking to somebody at
26:54
Apple about the new West playlist I'm
26:56
like why isn't kamasi Washington's new
26:59
song next to Zas they're all new West
27:04
you know what I'm saying kamasi from
27:05
Englewood he been there his whole life
27:07
the whole life and he's one of the
27:08
baddest ever but you you you you're
27:11
cutting you can't call La a Boiling Pot
27:13
a Gumbo Pot and then when it gets gumbo
27:15
you're like well it don't sound West
27:16
Coast it's confusing as [ __ ] yeah so we
27:19
go to we got to figure this out it
27:21
doesn't sound West Coast that's the
27:22
other thing I that's Co ain't one thing
27:25
man I mean that battle proved that like
27:27
all of those songs he released were by
27:28
La
27:29
producers every song he released in that
27:32
disc from Euphoria to meet the GRS to
27:35
616 to to the the one all yeah all La
27:39
producers so what is our sound yeah
27:41
because they all sound different right
27:44
damn man there you go Jason Martin
27:46
that's what's different between him and
27:48
problems he Sol Jason solves
27:52
them right I'm de AKA solution AKA
27:58
find the solution Tri you want to get
28:01
out here yeah absolutely you know what
28:03
I'm still stuck on in this entire
28:05
conversation has been so insightful
28:06
Jason to Pedal backwards a bit um I feel
28:11
like this was either quick or Pooh who
28:12
had mentioned but this Mantra of Living
28:15
Dangerously right and when you see the
28:18
majority of the people going right going
28:21
left for yourself how can you identify
28:26
when you're being cont Arian just for
28:29
the sake of being different because
28:31
sometimes we may actually enjoy what
28:34
happens to be popular at the time what
28:37
is actually like trending within the
28:39
masses so do you have kind of a compass
28:43
for your own authenticity where it's
28:45
like knowing when you're rebelling just
28:47
for rebellion's sake yeah definitely you
28:51
got to have a meter on it uh-huh um cuz
28:53
quick is rebellion if you put rebellious
28:56
it should be his face he is the most
28:58
audacious Creator we've ever seen so I
29:02
definitely we do a lot of willing back
29:03
in just so so it can like resonate
29:06
because some music ears is just he's
29:08
he's so he's so far ahead of everybody's
29:11
an alien um so yeah I'm definitely I'm
29:14
definitely keeping that in mind but I
29:16
mean the flip side to that is like you
29:18
can go to people for that it's some
29:19
people that just only do what's popular
29:21
right and that's cool too this might not
29:24
be the the hotel you want to stay at
29:25
today M cuz we shaking [ __ ] up us over
29:28
here we trying our damnest to shake it
29:30
up and make it so that it does resonate
29:32
to the common listener um but if it
29:34
don't it's like all right you know maybe
29:36
y' will catch up later right you know
29:38
and I think that's the difference
29:39
between approaching your work as art
29:41
versus a product because in my opinion
29:44
the art is always about your personal
29:46
catharsis and the product is always
29:48
about what does the outside desire yeah
29:51
like this project even this project was
29:53
really it it turned into one thing it
29:56
was it started as it wasn't a project
29:59
you know I'm saying just me wanting the
30:00
homie to work and then it became this
30:03
this camaraderie place where like there
30:06
there are no old songs on this album
30:08
okay like all the features came in that
30:10
40-day period And if you look there's a
30:12
lot of people on this album and people
30:14
were just sending in verses out of
30:15
nowhere they were just excited to hear
30:17
and rap over different things they were
30:19
getting everybody's getting sent the
30:20
same beat packs these days so they were
30:22
actually hearing like baselines and Funk
30:25
and different voices and like and then
30:28
you hear quick you just like want to be
30:30
involved with had put on an album I
30:32
think is Rose yeah yeah so yeah man um
30:35
we I don't I wouldn't say we went into
30:37
it like we're going to shake it up but
30:40
once you start listening you're like oh
30:42
yeah we about that's right we going to
30:43
sh [ __ ] and and it takes some pivots
30:46
because you got a um I want to say AO or
30:49
IO AO a shout out to K man saw him last
30:53
night krata like you know that that that
30:56
and that whole sound Sonic of that song
30:59
is distinct and then you got the D song
31:01
with CE yes on it too which takes you
31:03
into a whole another Direction you
31:06
mentioned this is like your chronic yeah
31:08
yeah we we we purposely said we're going
31:11
to try to do something different we
31:13
we're both producers first yeah so it
31:16
was songs that I was just on and I just
31:17
like deleted the verses and put somebody
31:19
else there wow your own verses yeah you
31:22
could have did that verse today
31:25
yeah verse
31:28
the 6:45 in the morning versiones are
31:30
not cracking I'm going give you got
31:33
that's a 3:30 thing for me I got to warm
31:35
up this this is a little older these
31:37
days but no we we we definitely it was
31:40
it was times where I pulled I pulled
31:42
myself off of version like N I think it'
31:44
be dope if dude go right here like I'm
31:46
not I think I'm maybe
31:48
on six of the songs maybe five I
31:51
produced most of them you know what I'm
31:53
saying but as far as that I was more so
31:55
writing putting people in the spots the
31:58
ranging Jay worthy was very big and uh
32:00
just assisting with the anr process um
32:03
so yeah it was we just wanted to have a
32:05
big party so is it more important to you
32:08
that a song overall sounds great versus
32:11
you being the best on a song totally
32:14
okay the song wins the song wins every
32:16
fight it that's the only ego in the room
32:18
is the song did did you have to shift
32:20
into that mentality or was that always
32:22
you always been me I didn't have people
32:24
try to tell they tell me like man you
32:25
need to get back on this and like nah
32:28
I hear something else like I I I can
32:30
hear that tone or I think it just needed
32:32
to be spiced up like for me I don't I I
32:36
look at like I got something that God
32:37
gave me so I'm not going to run out of
32:39
it so I mean we'll just I'll get on the
32:41
next one word it ain't it ain't really
32:43
deep like that when we making the music
32:46
that's an abundance mindset and I feel
32:48
like that's something else that when we
32:50
speak about the unification and when we
32:51
speak about how can we maintain this
32:54
energy I feel like focusing more on the
32:56
camaraderie than the competition the
32:59
collaborative nature of this game brings
33:01
out the best in US yeah like I mean like
33:03
the girls and young I heard when yall
33:04
was playing it is like um yeah I could
33:07
have put a verse on there but this is
33:09
Larry June and Quick's first time ever
33:11
together like let them have that moment
33:14
like let them I I know Larry I know what
33:16
I'm saying that we can do our thing
33:18
anytime but this was about him
33:21
fulfilling Some Dream he had like I get
33:23
to be with DJ Quick like what do I look
33:25
like all right move out the way here I
33:26
come like
33:28
come on guys one as side one a side come
33:31
on guys my turn [ __ ] this is this is
33:34
crazy like this is crazy so was
33:36
beautiful n it it was really dope it was
33:38
dope to see that's King [ __ ] what does
33:39
gerbs mean GS is somebody wanted to ask
33:43
that question like a noun like if I was
33:45
like like if I'm talking about the
33:46
markers like hand me that g or I'm about
33:47
to go out anything can be a g so shout
33:51
out to my boy scrap Man Scrap roui out
33:53
of Englewood that's his lingo SC came up
33:55
there yeah so if a beautiful woman walk
33:58
by or oh yeah no she's a young so the
34:00
young is girl so gerb and young that's
34:02
the name of the album things and women
34:04
wow even if she's older than you she's
34:06
still a young a young check you out
34:07
young yeah that's nice straight up women
34:09
are always Youngy listen man women are
34:11
Forever Young reason going to make you
34:13
feel good no matter what like young
34:16
peace young you feeling good come on
34:17

34:24
oh hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey
34:29
whoa do [ __ ] them
34:34
up yo man that's crazy uh man we got
34:38
Jason Martin here chupacabra yep that
34:42
has a lot of meaning to manyi what does
34:44
this why does this apply to this
34:47
album um well um that's the Hispanic
34:50
Bigfoot is what I like to call it this
34:53
monster that's never been seen but it's
34:54
like this folk thing where everybody's
34:56
like a little nervous about it I used to
34:58
joke with my boy luck about saying I've
35:00
seen four of them in my life and he
35:02
thinks I'm lying but I tell him I know
35:03
where they at so that was our joke for a
35:05
minutes and we did the album I just
35:07
started digging deep in the meeting and
35:09
it was like hm this is the one thing
35:11
that all the goats are afraid of
35:14
yeah oh cuz the TR go up that's like a
35:19
triple so if you know me and Quick's
35:22
backgrounds you know when we walk in the
35:24
studios people know we in there and they
35:26
be scared I don't know if they're scared
35:29
but I I just know they know we in there
35:31
they're aware of our presence they know
35:33
what we bring to the table you're an
35:34
intimidating figure well problem was
35:37
Jason is a little different I thought it
35:40
was like a dope play on that like oh
35:41
that's fly you know what I'm saying so
