your girlfriends and the support that

you just have with your friends in your

uh and i remember just kind of being out

some nights and looking

at us you know and being like this is so

incredibly special

and this is so powerful for us i wish

could see this i wish you could see us

in our neighborhood

in a space like harlem on screen and

they never had

and so i really wanted to you know bring

that to the world

i mean but you know it's not just women

in their 20s it's

amazing black women you know yeah

when you say that you know i was around

the group of that your friends my

friends the people that we all hung

were all doing exceptional things you

know every single one of them whether

they were starting

working in viacom as producers as

editors or

going back to law school and doing these

amazing things

and you know we kind of saw that with uh

girlfriends we kind of

saw that with living single and to me in

this time and space i think is

the nieces and the daughters of those

shows have gone off to take it to a

whole nother level

learning it's like oh damn i wish i had

this show out

back then when i was dealing with folks

maybe you would have known too much

like taking advantage

like the community that we were a part

of and that is so strong in new york is

just full of dynamic

all ages and what i loved about harlem

and what i thought was important

to show harlem is the community is not

right like if we were in our 20s and you

guys were

you know a little older than us and then

there was people older than that like

everyone was just in the same

place having the same cocktail singing

and there's so much to learn when you're

able to be in community

that doesn't segregate you and separate

you and belittle you

because you're too young or you're too

old and i think that's a very

big characteristic of harlem um you got

and as i look at all these scenarios lee

there's some scenarios you could have

these girls obviously go through their

struggles and they have heartache and

they have career disappointment

and from the support that you get from

your real friends in those moments

much i lived in harlem for

for seven years um and harlem was

you know it was always my dream to live

in that neighborhood i knew i wanted to

move to new york city when i was a

little kid and harlem was exactly where

i wanted to live i even had

you know conflict in my relationship

that i was in at the time because he did

not want to live in harlem he wanted to

move to brooklyn and i would refuse

to move out of harlem because i was just
7:33
like no i
7:34
waited my whole life to live here and

i'm gonna ride this thing so the wheels

fall off so

um you know for me just i can't really
7:42
say exactly what it was that kept me

going other than just love for the crap

love for storytelling empathy for

for humanity and just uh like a deep

innate understanding that this is what i

was supposed to be doing

and then if i just maintain that that

tenacity and that that sense of belief

in myself that

eventually i would land exactly where i

was supposed to be

and so to have moved across the country

to live in california

and you know seven years eight years

after leaving new york city

booking a television show that's created

by a woman who has the same love affair

um with harlem that i did and getting to

come back and play a character that has

that love affair with with this

neighborhood and

this community it's just it's so divine

and and i'm i'm i'm so honored to be a

part of it and i i can't

i can't believe that that it's happening

have to have this because she's so much

like me i mean

especially with where she starts out and

confidence has been shaken and that

this this these big ideas of who she was

going to be and

and the kind of you know career success

that she wanted just kind of falling to

the wayside she kind of crashed and

burned a little bit

and has had to start from the bottom and

really humble herself and

and start to re-ask those questions of

who am i and what do i want out of my

life and

you know what i thought i wanted didn't

work so where can i go from here is

something that

i really resonate with and i think a lot

of other people

have have had similar experiences and so

for her to just be

figuring it out and doing the best she

can and making some mistakes

but being able to be uplifted by the

incredible women that she has around her

best friend and with the backdrop of

this this community of harlem

you know it really was so reflective of

a lot of the experiences that i've had

in my life and i think that

you know leave really captured these

women in such a brilliant way

pages i saw myself in in all of them and

i still see myself in all of these women

and so i'm just you know i i love

and then all of the similarities that i

of this show and it has been over

10 years and over four different names

hundreds of drafts right that this show

and i think you just have to like what

andrea said like you have to know

your gift and you have to believe in

your gift more than anyone else

um you know sway knew me when i was met

me when i was a young

girl and like for me

the journey of being able to sustain

and progress and convince you know

sometimes you're even convincing your

peers right and you're like you're going

to convince your parents that you're not

crazy

that you can do this you know

because even people that love you will

love you by discouraging you

and they don't mean like that they're

loving you by trying to protect you

and that protection is discouraging yeah

it has to be

a focus of like trusting your voice

trusting your calling knowing that you

have something to say

and that you deserve the chance to say

it and then you just

never give up you can never ever ever

walk away from your thing because i

truly believe the only way you don't get

is that you stop walking that direction

i had to leave harlem which i never ever

wanted to do

and move to la which i still don't like

you know do this thing and like find my

way because it was so

important to me to stay on this path to

tell this story about these women

to be a part of the space now right like

now i have other projects going and

other people calling me

and asking me to lend my voice to you

know historical films and like things

it's bigger than even what i imagine

right like your your real column is

thing right in my mind that i wanted

i met my love i became a mother not only

to my two-year-old daughter but to his

ten-year-old daughter with my

stepdaughter you know and i

ended up in a life that i did not i

never saw for myself

you know i never saw family because all

i thought was ambition

and i think though the self work that

happens to reach

your ambitions goals also

changes who you are as a person like if

you're doing it right

so for me i feel like my journey was i

was able to attract

love that i needed and write like a

spiritual

shift that i needed to be able to

achieve this work dream

because i focused on the personal and

time like

focusing on the internal right and then

manifesting

outwardly beyond what you can see and

a whole family i didn't think i wanted

and i think that you have to

open all of a sudden

after staying 10 years in my twins i

like all of those things like i have to

be in that space

the self-worth journey

to me is the thing that unlocks all the

so that when you get into work you can

be joyous when you get in the work you

can recognize the vampires

that are coming out you know offering

because somebody offers you something

and so like staying grounded spiritually

felt like i wanted to say

i i you know what one of the things that

i've learned is that

every single step that you take in your

life is a part of your purpose

you know resembles what you perceive to

be failure

or hardship it's all part of your

purpose because it's leading you

down the path to get to where you really

want to be

and where you're where you're destined

to be you know like i

my last big job was was ncis la

and when when i first got that i thought

it was my dream job and it ended up
19:10
being
19:11
an extremely difficult experience it was

it was seven months and it was grueling

and there were a lot of things that
19:16
happened on the show that
19:18
really just shook me to my core but
19:20
ultimately what happened from
19:21
that you know experience ending was that
19:24
it sent me on this
19:25
really deep intense you know spiritual
19:28
journey of deep
19:29
shadow work and inner child healing and
19:32
therapy
19:33
and you know establishing a meditation
19:36
practice that really just brought me to
19:38
a place where i
19:39
was able to you know clear a lot of that
19:42
intergenerational trauma and and the
19:45
epigenetic trauma
19:46
that was preventing me from from
19:48
manifesting the the real
19:50
the real um things that i wanted in my
19:52
life you know like almost like i was
19:54
blocking my own blessing
19:55
but i was able to clear the fluff away
19:58
so that i could just ground and center

myself and call in what was truly meant

for me
20:02
and and that was you know this this show

for instance you know i was able to
20:07
develop a sense of
20:08
of openness and i was able to open my
20:10
heart and and be able to have
20:12
experiences that i didn't necessarily

believe were possible for me

and that's what allowed me to even have

this audition experience

you know because i i went in for a role
20:23
for a different
20:24
show that i never would have auditioned
20:26
for this show i used to say
20:28
no to all kinds of things just because
20:30
of my judgments about
20:31
the character or the director or who's
20:34
producing it and then
20:35
i learned that you know what it's not
20:38
about them
20:39
it's about what can i bring to this
20:40
moment what can i do with this script
20:43
how can i take you know this okay the
20:45
writing is
20:46
is bad but i'm not a bad actor i'm a
20:48
great actor so i can break this down and
20:50
i can elevate this piece
20:52
of writing to something that's really
20:55
beautiful and authentic and
20:57
and heart wrenching so let me do that
20:59
and it was my ability to do that with
21:01
what i perceived to be
21:02
bad writing that allowed me to go
21:04
straight to you know
21:06
a an audition with lee and any vet and
21:09
and millicent who directed the pilot
21:11
and i never even would have gotten the
21:12
opportunity to audition for them had i
21:14
not been open
21:15
to that other audition that i would have
21:18
originally said no to
21:19
but all of that was because of all of
21:21
the experiences that i had before that
21:23
led me to that openness
21:24
and that's kind of what lee was touching
21:26
on when she said that you know she
21:28
didn't want a family she didn't want
21:29
children
21:30
but then her opening her heart to the
21:32
possibility of that is what created
21:34
that that that ability to fill her cup
21:36
up with all of the other things that she
21:38
didn't even realize were possible for
21:40
herself
21:40
and i think that's what i think that's

what a lot of people don't understand
21:44
is that having that open heart and
21:46
trusting the process that you're on even
21:48
when it feels
21:49
terrible and painful and you're
21:51
literally on your knees bawling your
21:53
eyes out because the pain is so
21:54
overwhelming
21:55
what that's doing is that's clearing you
21:58
so that
21:58
you can fill yourself up with the things

that you're really destined to

experience

and that to me has been absolutely
22:05
transformative but the woman
22:06
that i am today is so completely
22:09
different from the woman that i was
22:11
three or four years ago but it's because
22:13
of the the the transition that i was
22:16
able to go through from
22:17
going from hardship to spirituality to
22:19
realizing my
22:21
my divine power to call in the things
22:23
that

you know like that are even bigger than
22:26
i can imagine like this is so huge

but i also know that even what i'm
22:29
experiencing right now with run the
22:31
world is just
22:32
one step in the journey for me and that
22:34
and that realization

just you're you're limitless when you

when you can come to that that point of
22:40
understanding and i think it's
22:41
i think that's the best advice that i
22:43
can give to people is just to be open
22:45
and to heal yourself because healing

allows

room for more things to be given to you
