Being myself, being authentic, and not
0:02
letting anything break me. That's what
0:04
it took.
0:06
Yeah, man. That voice right there.
0:09
Oh, man. It brings tears to my eyes to
0:11
talk about this young lady, Heather B.
0:13
I saw her from the beginning.
0:14
Right.
0:15
I saw the evolution of it.
0:18
I met her in Bay Area back in the early
0:20
'90s.
0:21
Mhm. You know, going into the mid-'90s,
0:23
and she was just a yearling running off
0:26
into the meadow, searching for little
0:28
flowers and plants, you know, leaping
0:31
across the field.
0:33
So just full of naivete
0:36
and big dreams and big goals. And she
0:40
actually became um an employee Mhm. of
0:44
ours, my good friend AD and mine. And I
0:46
had a company called Streetwise
0:48
Promotions
0:49
Yes.
0:49
and marketing. And there were a lot of
0:51
folks in the Bay Area that we knew were
0:53
extremely knowledgeable, hungry, that
0:55
came on board to help us out.
0:57
Mhm. That promotion company became the
0:59
biggest promotion company in Northern
1:01
California because of this young lady
1:03
right here,
1:04
Kristal Isaacs.
1:06
Yes. Honey presents
1:08
Honey presents.
1:08
uh and all of these different things. So
1:10
it's just been a treat to watch our next
1:12
guest navigate her way through the
1:14
business and taking all the she got from
1:16
those early years and facing all the
1:18
adversity that you will face if you're a
1:20
woman in this industry, and if you're a
1:22
black woman in this industry,
1:23
Of course.
1:23
you're going to face three times the
1:25
adversity of any five times of anyone
1:27
else. And I watched her move to New York
1:30
and put her foot down, which is for us
1:33
it's a big deal if you grew up in
1:35
California to be able to fly out here
1:37
and be in New York and make it in this
1:39
town.
1:39
Sure. And over 20 years she'd been
1:41
working in this wine and spirits
1:42
industry collecting information, making
1:45
other people rich um with her
1:47
experience, and rightfully so. And now
1:49
she's stepping out on her own. I want to
1:51
welcome her to the show. Give it up for
1:53
the one and only Ingrid Best is here
1:56
from I Best Wines.
2:00
I Best Wines.
2:01
Come on. I need to see SOME OF THAT.
2:06
Y'ALL SEE THE CONNECTION, CITIZENS?
2:08
YOU SEE THE CONNECTION.
2:11
How first of all, congratulations.
2:13
Yep. Thank you. You're stepping out on
2:14
faith, huh? I'm stepping out on faith
2:16
and courage. Mhm. Faith and courage.
2:19
You've worked with a lot of
2:21
big names in the business. In that clip
2:23
they talked about Diddy, you worked
2:25
around Jay-Z, you worked around a lot of
2:27
folks. Are you doing this independently,
2:28
or are any of these people coming on
2:30
board to help? No, so I'm doing it
2:32
independently. I've funded it soup to
2:35
nuts with my own money, and it's not
2:37
cheap to be in the wine business at by
2:39
no stretch of imagination.
2:41
Um I'm grateful that I made some good
2:43
decisions, real estate in Oakland.
2:45
Mhm. You know,
2:46
Yeah. I learned about stocks, I invest
2:48
in art, Mhm. and I'm blessed to have
2:51
done those things cuz it's the only
2:52
reason why I was able to fund this
2:54
venture.
2:55
Mhm. It was only until last week, the
2:57
last 2 weeks, because I had friends,
3:00
like good friends, saying, "Please let
3:02
us invest in you. Mhm. We know that this
3:04
is taking your capital." And so four
3:06
black women friends of mine invested
3:09
over the last 2 weeks.
3:11
Amen. Come on.
3:14
We're so much more powerful together.
3:16
For sure. Ingrid, speak about your love
3:19
for wine because to say yes to all the
3:21
hurdles that come with this career path,
3:24
with this level of entrepreneurship,
3:26
what was enticing about these bottles?
3:30
Ooh. It's a real love story. You know, I
3:33
started I mean, I always say music is my
3:36
first love,
3:37
Mhm. right? Which I think Sway just did
3:39
such a beautiful job explaining where I
3:41
come from. And then I had the
3:44
opportunity to get into wine and
3:45
spirits. And the way I approached wine
3:47
and spirits was the way I approached
3:49
street promotions and how I approached
3:51
telling stories around artists.
3:53
Mhm. Um and I realized at a certain
3:56
point like spirits are great, and I I
3:59
could do it with my eyes closed, but
4:01
what I love is wine. Mhm. And I'm a firm
4:03
believer that you do what you love.
4:05
Yeah. Absolutely.
4:06
always much easier to do if you love it.
4:09
Mhm. And that's for those people that
4:11
are obsessed with money, Mhm. the money
4:13
comes when you're doing what you love.
4:15
Yeah. It's much harder to get to the bag
4:18
when you're not doing what you love.
4:20
Mhm. And so when I thought about like,
4:22
"Okay, this is my love, my purpose." And
4:24
that's where uh South Africa comes in.
4:26
But then also, like you said, I've made
4:28
a lot of people really, really wealthy.
4:31
And so it's my time. It's my time to
4:33
pour that into myself. Uh and so yeah,
4:36
wine is just no pun.
4:39
The wine I just love
4:40
Cuz she said pour that into herself.
4:41
Okay. Sorry. I was so into the story. I
4:43
was like, "What was the pun?" All right.
4:44
Go ahead. It winked at me. I had to wink
4:46
back.
4:49
But I love I absolutely love wine, and I
4:51
think the other piece around wine is
4:53
that there's an expectation that people
4:55
that look like the us in this room don't
4:57
know anything about wine.
4:58
Right. Or don't belong belong in the
5:00
wine shop, and it don't belong in the
5:02
wine story. And so for me, um in pure
5:06
Ingrid Best fashion, I'm a disruptor.
5:08
I'm like, "No, we belong here."
5:10
belong here.
5:11
We belong here. And if if you need to be
5:13
reminded that we belong here, I'm going
5:15
to be the person to remind you.
5:17
Yes. Ingrid Best Wines in the building.
5:20
Bottles up. Bottles up.
5:22
Speaking about being in the building,
5:24
Ingrid, welcome again to the show. And
5:26
and and thank you for sharing a part of
5:28
your story like that. You mentioned like
5:30
being in the building. I was We were
5:31
having a conversation yesterday with the
5:33
Wolf of Wine. We were talking to
5:34
Jermaine Stone. And um I had opportunity
5:37
to talk to him off air, and I was saying
5:39
to him, "You know, I go to Total Wine a
5:41
lot. That's like my go-to place. And
5:44
it's it's a bit overwhelming. And I
5:46
realized from a retail perspective that
5:49
you guys are probably fighting for shelf
5:51
space. Absolutely.
5:52
You know, um how did you find a way to
5:55
navigate through that for placement?
5:57
Because if I walk into the store, I want
5:59
to see the McBride sisters. I want to
6:02
see I Best Wine. I want to see these
6:04
names and and and Fern Weaver. Fern
6:06
Weaver.
6:07
Nearest right next to Hennessy and
6:08
everything else. How has that been for
6:10
you, that process, the navigation in
6:12
terms of store placement, if that makes
6:14
sense? So that's part of my why is you
6:18
know, new brands, especially brands that
6:21
are owned by black and brown people,
6:23
what we have to
6:25
to just get to this. And then you get to
6:27
this. And then you have to get to the
6:29
distributor, right? Cuz we're in a
6:30
three-tier system. You got to get the to
6:32
believe in Then you got to get the
6:33
distributor to actually do the work to
6:36
sell you to the customers like a Total
6:38
Wine. And so that process is not an easy
6:41
one, and it's
6:43
definitely not easy if you're black and
6:45
brown, because you're always having to
6:47
overprove yourself.
6:49
Um for us, you know, we are launching on
6:51
Tuesday
6:52
Okay.
6:53
um 10/10, and we partnered with
6:56
ReserveBar to do our pre-sale. What is
6:59
ReserveBar?
7:00
ReserveBar is basically an on- online
7:02
platform where you can order alcohol for
7:05
delivery. And they a couple years ago
7:08
they launched a program called Spirited
7:10
Change, and it was really about
7:12
supporting and focusing on black and
7:14
brown-owned brands. And uh we have
7:18
partnered with them, they have embraced
7:19
us, and that's why we decided to to do
7:22
the pre-sale with them. And then from
7:24
there we're going to build. I mean, I am
7:26
calling stores. The fact that I've been
7:29
doing this for 20 plus years,
7:31
and I hate to say it, I still have to
7:32
call stores and say, "Hey, remember me
7:34
when I was in there with Sir Rock?" But
7:35
I have to, right?
7:37
And so that's part of it. We've all had
7:39
to. Fern had to. The McBride sisters had
7:41
to.
7:41
LaFete. LaFete, Donay had to. And we're
7:44
going to continue to do it. We're
7:45
relentless, and we believe in what we're
7:47
doing. But the truth is, it's not easy.
7:50
And we do need big companies to make
7:53
good on their claim to make space for
7:55
us. We're going to We're going to take
7:57
the space,
7:58
Right. but they have to make the space.
8:00
That's why it was important for me to
8:01
mention this, because people don't
8:02
realize the same thing happens in the
8:04
grocery store.
8:05
Mhm. If you think about Entenmann's
8:06
cake, they always have that end aisle.
8:09
You think about uh English muffins, they
8:11
always have that end aisle. It They pay
8:14
for that. It's It's It's on purpose.
8:17
Product placement, and it's important
8:19
like the record industry
8:20
record industry. And so I wanted the
8:22
citizens to understand about that as
8:24
well. When we go into these places and
8:26
we can't find a LaFete, the McBride
8:29
sisters, the I Best, we we need to start
8:31
shouting that out as well.
8:34
That makes a difference, too, when you
8:36
request a brand that they don't have.
8:38
Big time. I just recently did that. With
8:40
one of um
8:42
Andre Mack's wines.
8:43
Yeah. Yeah. We spoke about yesterday. So
8:45
all the citizens who drink wine, when
8:47
you go into your wine distributor or
8:49
store that you get your wine in, ask for
8:51
I Best Wines.
8:52
Ask for I Best, and all the rest as
8:54
well. All the rest as well. makes a
8:56
great rosé.
8:58
Donay's my brother, and he's been so
9:00
supportive
9:00
Donay. Yes. for uh in this process. And
9:03
I will tell you, we all support each
9:05
other. We're building this together.
9:07
Good. We don't look at each other like
9:08
competitors.
9:09
Mhm. I'm actually going to see Donay
9:10
later today. Tell him we said what's up.
9:12
He's a citizen of Sway. And um he's been
9:15
hugely helpful to myself and my team as
9:18
we've been building this. We're all old
9:20
colleagues. We used to work at LVMH
9:21
together. Um and so to see him do his
9:24
thing, and now I'm doing my thing,
9:26
Dope. we are actively making the change
9:29
that needs to happen. Ingrid Best is
9:31
here. Listen, citizens,
9:33
not only does she have her own wine
9:35
line, but Ingrid Best can do a talk
9:37
series on business,
9:40
dos and don'ts, right? And she has that
9:43
kind of experience. I I'm so proud of
9:45
her right now. You and your whole entire
9:47
team. If you want to find out how you
9:49
could get into this industry,
9:50
888-742-3345,
9:53
uh you could talk directly with Ingrid
9:55
Best, especially if you want to talk
9:56
about wines and some of the initiatives
9:58
that she's going to be taking on
10:00
alongside this wine brand. Call us right
10:02
now. Sway in the morning show 4 5 as we
10:05
get situated right here. We got Ingrid
10:06
Best is here.
10:08
Ingrid Best
10:09
Yes. of IBest Wines
10:12
Um IBest Wines is her company that she
10:15
founded.
10:16
And this is a black woman who's entering
10:18
the area that we don't see a lot of
10:20
black women in as owners.
10:22
And this wine the the focus of this wine
10:25
has something to do with South Africa,
10:27
correct?
10:28
Yes, absolutely.
10:29
Can you speak to why?
10:31
Because South Africa has an incredible
10:34
wine region that most people do not know
10:36
about. And I'll tell you my own personal
10:40
story. I had been in the business at
10:42
that time about 15 years. I had been all
10:45
over the world. I had been to wine
10:46
regions. Obviously Napa,
10:49
France.
10:50
And I went to South Africa with a friend
10:54
and there was all this wine and I was
10:56
like, this wine is good. And they're
10:58
like, yeah, it's from our region. It's
11:00
from the you know, Stellenbosch,
11:01
Franschhoek. And I'm like, a region? I
11:04
didn't know.
11:05
And I've been in the game for 15 years
11:07
and I didn't know.
11:09
And so in pure Ingrid fashion, I go on a
11:11
discovery, right? Like, why don't I know
11:13
about this? What what's going on here?
11:15
And found that South Africa has one of
11:18
the most beautiful wine regions in the
11:20
world. It produces award-winning wine.
11:23
But guess what? When you walk into your
11:25
shops like you spoke of earlier,
11:28
you rarely see a South Africa section.
11:31
Mhm. And the truth is South Africa
11:34
produces enough wine to have sections in
11:37
stores. Mhm. And so for me, I knew I
11:39
wanted to launch a brand. I knew I
11:41
wanted to launch a wine. Initially, I
11:43
was going to launch from Napa cuz it's
11:45
home. And uh I was talking with to a
11:48
friend. I said, Napa South Africa. They
11:50
looked at me and said, girl,
11:53
the fact that you're even asking about
11:55
South Africa. I said, I know, you're
11:56
right. I said, I guess in my mind it's
11:58
so far, Mhm.
12:00
you know? And and that was it. I made
12:03
the decision in that moment. And I all
12:05
but moved to South Africa over the last
12:07
2 years. I mean, I was there all the
12:09
time. And it was really important for me
12:12
to touch the people and almost get
12:15
permission. Mhm.
12:16
Because I'm a black woman from America,
12:18
right? And so what I didn't want to do
12:21
is make anyone feel like I was telling
12:23
them about how great what they have is.
12:25
Mhm. Yeah. Right? Like, I'm just I'm
12:27
mindful that way.
12:28
Yeah. And so my my first, I would say,
12:31
kind of exploration was in talking to
12:33
people and saying, what would you feel
12:36
about a black woman from America
12:38
launching a South African wine? And all
12:40
of them were like, yes. Please tell our
12:44
story. Mhm. Um and it was so moving. And
12:47
I just fell in love. The wine is really
12:50
my love story with South Africa. And it
12:53
really is my way
12:55
of sharing just the blended worlds of
12:59
wine and art and creativity, which are
13:02
all the things that I love and are the
13:04
center of the things that I do. So
13:06
that's why South Africa. And and and
13:08
usually when people ask at your family,
13:11
so I'mma give you that like, I usually
13:12
say, why not? Mhm.
13:14
Right? Why not?
13:16
Why not? You you speak to art a lot. I
13:17
see you in the art circles a lot. Um
13:21
you have the belief that art is one of
13:23
the key ways to a generational wealth
13:26
within our community, right?
13:27
Absolutely.
13:28
Speak to that. Yeah. You know, similar
13:30
to wine, art is one of those, I would
13:33
say, arenas, industries that um for the
13:38
most part black and brown people haven't
13:40
necessarily felt like it is for us.
13:42
Right. And most black and brown people
13:45
don't realize how much black art is
13:48
hanging in a lot of people's homes that
13:51
don't look like us. Mhm. And so for me,
13:54
again, one of those discovery moments, I
13:57
remember
13:58
it was Jay in a record talking about art
14:01
and I was like, yep, that's an asset and
14:03
I'm going for it.
14:03
Mhm. Picasso? Mhm.
14:05
Yeah. And so I started to take my
14:08
bonuses from work and buy art. Instead
14:10
of buying a purse or a
14:12
watch, which I like those things.
14:14
Yeah. Um I realized that I loved art.
14:17
And it and it allowed me to kind of go
14:19
on a journey places and imagine things,
14:22
right? And I realized I hadn't been to
14:25
many museums. I hadn't been to any
14:28
exhibits. You know, I I realized that
14:31
the average story is one that like we
14:34
haven't necessarily done that. So art is
14:37
a great way to build wealth. It's a
14:40
great way to preserve our stories. It's
14:43
a great way to leave something to your
14:45
children or to your family.
14:47
Yeah. And if you talk to most wealthy
14:50
people, I'll tell you what's in their
14:52
portfolio. Art.
14:53
Art.
14:53
Real estate, wine. Mhm.
14:56
Wealthy people invest in wine, they
14:58
invest in art, they invest in real
15:00
estate. And so we just got to study the
15:03
people that are doing it. Yeah.
15:05
Yeah, like you.
15:06
We have to study you, Ingrid Best,
15:08
because you're doing it really well,
15:11
right? She's talking about assets.
15:14
I said 2024 is the year of assets.
15:17
Yep. Screw cash. Right.
15:19
Obtain you some assets. Cash comes and
15:22
goes.
15:23
That's true. It loses value. Yeah. Take
15:25
that dollar overseas and see if it's
15:26
worth a dollar.
15:27
Right. Come on. So I love this Ingrid
15:30
Best. We got uh we going to do a taste
15:32
test right now. Why don't we Yay.
15:34
We got Heather brought her special
15:35
glasses for this.
15:37
All right. Okay. And you know, the happy
15:40
hour The happy hour is here. And while
15:42
we somebody's pouring wine, I'mma take a
15:44
caller. Aaron is in California. Heather,
15:45
you mind doing the It's Ingrid's
15:47
Oh oh, she got
15:47
I don't mind. I could just You know, I
15:49
could do it all. Okay. So what are you
15:50
pouring? Yeah, I'm going to what I'm
15:52
going to do is
15:53
on this side of the room I'm going to
15:55
pour the red and on this side of the
15:57
room I'm going to pour the white.
15:58
a white wine I'm a red. This is a red
16:00
blend. It's from South Africa. It's cab,
16:03
shiraz, petite sirah, and malbec. And
16:06
the reason why I did a blend, it was
16:08
very deliberate um because I want to
16:10
show the breadth of wine coming from
16:11
South Africa.
16:12
Love it.
16:12
Wow. Okay, cool. Ingrid is
16:14
Thank you.
16:15
you going to take a call? I'mma take a
16:16
call. Aaron is on the line and he and he
16:18
wanted to make a comment. Go ahead,
16:19
Aaron. Say hi to Ingrid. Hi, Aaron.
16:21
Hey, Aaron.
16:21
Ingrid, good morning. Good morning,
16:22
everybody.
16:23
Sorry.
16:24
Long time listener, fourth time caller.
16:27
Happy to be back on with you guys.
16:28
Okay. Well, welcome. Okay.
16:32
Yeah, he said he's he's a super citizen.
16:34
Sway in the morning. And I I I want to
16:36
give a shout-out to Ingrid. Um it's it's
16:38
very impressive. I love to see what
16:40
you're doing. I went ahead and hopped on
16:41
Instagram, gave you guys a follow.
16:43
Um and I want to give a shout-out to my
16:45
my buddy Brandon. Just like you said, um
16:47
he's a black man. He just opened his own
16:49
wine called the Shepherd Collection out
16:51
here in California, pulling grapes from
16:52
Paso Robles. And um he was working for
16:55
Daou Vineyards and he was, you know,
16:56
making them a lot of money. Pulled them
16:59
up to the Central Coast, started getting
17:00
their wines in all these stores and
17:01
everything. And he realized that he's
17:03
making all this money for these guys and
17:05
his bonuses aren't getting any bigger
17:07
and his paychecks aren't getting any
17:08
bigger, you know? But he decided to do
17:10
his own thing and you know, we got we
17:11
got another person of color owning a
17:13
winery. Like I said, it's called the
17:14
Shepherd Collection. Amen.
17:16
just released his second wine, uh a
17:18
cabernet franc and it is spectacular. So
17:20
I love to see our people doing this in
17:22
the wine business.
17:23
Amen. Thank you so much. I'm the only
17:25
I'm the only black sommelier here in in
17:27
uh in the Central Coast of California.
17:29
Wow. Wow, that's fantastic. That is
17:31
fantastic. Y'all need to link up. Yeah,
17:34
for sure. I would love to get your
17:36
information. I have an incredible
17:37
sommelier on my team as well named Grace
17:39
Mahary. Um you know, the education piece
17:42
of this is critical, right? Cuz again,
17:44
we are not expected to know about wine.
17:47
Mhm. Unfortunately, that's just how
17:48
we're viewed. And so shout-out to you,
17:51
shout-out to your friend from launching
17:53
his wine brand and believing in himself.
17:55
And listen, and my prediction is this.
17:58
First of all, the South African wine
17:59
region is going to have a renaissance.
18:01
It's starting with IBest Wines.
18:03
Um secondly, the the renaissance of just
18:06
black and brown people in wine is now.
18:09
Yeah. And so I think this caller is just
18:11
solidifying that. So thank you so much
18:13
for calling in.
18:14
Aaron from Cali, you're a super citizen,
18:15
brother.
18:18
Thank you, man. So so before we close,
18:20
let's all taste the wine. Now what am I
18:22
drinking? Okay. So I So I told you what
18:24
the red blend was. The ladies have the
18:25
red blend. What we're drinking, Sway, is
18:28
the white blend. It's uh
18:30
uh chardonnay, chenin blanc, and
18:32
sauvignon blanc. And again, very
18:34
deliberate in doing blends. Yes, chenin
18:37
blanc is actually like the crown jewel
18:39
of white wines for South Africa. But I
18:42
will tell you that chardonnay is
18:44
incredible. South African chardonnay,
18:46
very different than chardonnay from
18:48
Napa. And sauvignon blanc is also
18:50
incredible from from South Africa.
18:52
Again, the message here is that there
18:54
are so many varietals coming from South
18:57
Africa.
18:58
Okay.
18:58
Ingrid Best, thank you for coming by
19:00
this morning. Congratulations.
19:03
Citizens, I need every citizen to follow
19:06
IBest Wines. I, the letter I, B E S T,
19:11
wines, w i n e s. Support this sister.
19:14
Support our sister.
19:15
Ingrid.
19:16
breaking ground. Let me take a sip. Hold
19:18
on. Hold on. Wait, hold on. Let me smell
19:21
it out, brother. Yeah. No, he's he's
19:23
chilling.
19:23
I could drink white.
19:26
A little little treat. Sorry. She's
19:28
being mean.
19:30
Heather's being mean.
19:32
So good.
19:33
It is good. Sway going to be drunk. It
19:36
is.
19:38
I love it.
19:38
Mhm. I told you I love South African
19:40
wines.
19:41
Wow. Yeah. You like the whites from
19:43
South Africa.
19:43
the whites from South Africa. I've been
19:44
trying to find Do you cheers wines?
19:46
They're called Africoners. The whites
19:48
from South Africa, THEY'RE CALLED
19:49
AFRICONERS.
19:51
YEAH.
19:58
SHE IS HILARIOUS. IT'S THE WINE. YOU
19:59
SEE, THE wine makes you laugh. The wine
20:01
makes you happy. The red blend. Look at
20:03
how the red blend made her act. Come on.
20:05
Listen, Ingrid give me a round of
20:07
applause. You're making ground. You're
20:08
doing it for our community. You're doing
20:10
it for black women. I love you.
20:12
Yes, I love you. I love you.
20:14
I love you. You know that.
20:15
Yes. Okay, we going to catch up, all
20:17
right? We're going from one Oakland OG
20:20
to
20:21
It's a lot of Oakland today.
20:24
The town business. The town is in the in
20:25
the building. Lunelle is up next.
20:27
Comedian extraordinaire. Come on. Hey,
20:30
give me some Too Short or something.
20:32
Yes. Blow the whistle. Lunelle's going
20:34
to go get her. I got another I had
20:36
another song about bottles up, you know
20:37
what I mean? Oh, okay. DB want to stay
20:39
on theme. Yeah, yeah. All right, cool.
20:40
That's not a problem, DB. This one is
20:42
going for
20:43
Lunelle's here though. She She up in the
20:44
building.
20:46
Oh, well, Let's get drinking.
