This man is somebody who's been
0:01
dedicated, committed to his work over
0:03
the years. He watched his evolution as
0:06
being someone who was on the come up,
0:08
who loved and who was passionate about
0:09
the culture and wanted to document it
0:11
properly.
0:12
And we watched this man talk to artists
0:14
that nobody knew and watched those
0:15
artists become people that everybody
0:17
knew. Yep. He developed and matured and
0:20
and morphed into his own style.
0:23
We see him often doing his own series,
0:25
right, Tracy?
0:25
That's absolutely correct.
0:27
Goes over track by track with people and
0:29
their new projects and their albums.
0:31
Last one I watched him do it was with
0:32
Maino and Jim Jones.
0:35
He and I actually got a chance to share
0:36
the seats and I got a chance to watch
0:38
him work when we paid tribute to the one
0:40
and only DJ Kay Slay, the legendary Kay
0:42
Slay. We say his name you you you
0:44
applaud.
0:46
One of the things I enjoy about this
0:47
man, we've had many conversations over
0:49
the years. He's a man who's who walks
0:52
with some humility. He's not afraid to
0:55
sit and ask you for information. Ask you
0:58
and tap into your resources
1:00
and see how his could benefit you and
1:02
you could benefit him.
1:04
He's always been a man of the people,
1:05
solid person. So when he told me he was
1:07
involved in this movement, I said, "Of
1:09
course you are."
1:11
There's an incredible movement happening
1:13
right now with black men who jump on
1:15
bicycles and wear tight shorts.
1:20
Don't start hating now, Sway. Wow. Yeah,
1:23
when you say it like that. You know what
1:25
I'm saying? Exactly.
1:27
Exactly. And then the hate pulled up.
1:28
We jumping right in, okay?
1:29
Right.
1:31
And and today we're going to talk about
1:33
some of the amazing things they're
1:34
doing. What I love about it is I got a
1:36
Peloton at home.
1:38
I'm not a guy I grew up running track. I
1:40
don't like running as much as I do
1:42
riding bikes. During the quarantine, if
1:44
it wasn't for the bike I own, Rich Nice
1:47
and I would probably be 30 or 40 pounds
1:49
heavier.
1:50
And I'll be panting on this mic right
1:52
now. So through bike riding, I was able
1:54
to utilize that as therapy as well as
1:58
keep my mind, my body, and my physical
2:00
intact. Turns out that Great Rissy,
2:03
who's here with us today, big round of
2:05
applause, and brought Chad with him,
2:07
Chad Bennett, and Chris Harvell with
2:09
him. They are all here. Hey.
2:12
Welcome them to the show, the Black
2:13
Watts. Thank you. Cycling.
2:16
Bike crew. Bike crew.
2:19
WE DON'T TURN IT INTO A GAME. ALL RIGHT.
2:21
It all works.
2:22
It all works. It all works out. Thank
2:24
you guys for having us. Absolutely. So
2:26
if you ride bikes, any cyclist, call up
2:28
right now, 888-742-3345.
2:31
It's a whole world for you. Great Rissy,
2:34
what is this? How did this start?
2:36
All right. So, you know, I I think the
2:37
guys, they they tell this this the story
2:39
fabulously, man, and really, really
2:41
great. But what it came down to is that
2:43
like everybody else in 2020, the world
2:46
came to a halt, a stop, and it was a lot
2:48
of things going on that were negative.
2:50
You know, we were losing friends, we
2:51
were losing family, people were losing
2:53
their jobs. And in a lot of ways, we had
2:56
to find a way mentally to stay above
2:58
water. You know what I'm saying? Stay
3:00
above board. And I I remember my wife
3:02
being really adamant about cycling, or
3:04
at least this was spinning early on.
3:06
Spinning. There was a lot of [ __ ] I was
3:07
saying, "Fuck out of here, too."
3:09
Of course. And um it was when I think
3:12
when I took it very seriously, I think
3:13
we were out of work, we were away from
3:14
our studio for about week two, and I
3:16
started to see basketball rims come down
3:18
in different neighborhoods. And I said,
3:20
"Man, we got to I got to I got to find
3:23
something." And these two brothers to my
3:25
left, especially Chad over here, there
3:27
was a bike ride that we had did, and it
3:29
was one of those it was like a puff
3:30
moment, Tracy. It was one of those,
3:32
"Shit, we should do this every weekend."
3:34
And I remember we had this first
3:36
Father's Day ride, and I think that's
3:38
when that first that initial thought
3:40
came, "We really can build off of this
3:43
community." And we've I want to say that
3:46
we've never looked back since. There's a
3:48
group of men that was a part of that,
3:49
brothers,
3:50
and what I got to really applaud these
3:53
two gentlemen to the left of me and to
3:55
the right, depending on where you're
3:55
looking, with Chad and Chris and our
3:58
other brother, Akil, who's not here
3:59
right now, but he was on my show last
4:01
night cuz I want to make sure I heard
4:02
his voice and all of our listeners got
4:04
to hear that as well. They turned this
4:06
into something that was they elevated
4:09
the visibility of it and they made it
4:10
real. It wasn't an idea anymore. And we
4:13
got on these bikes and people were doing
4:15
miles and that that five miles where you
4:16
was like, "Damn, this is five miles?"
4:18
That turned into 10, and 10 turned into
4:19
20, 20 turned into 50, and next thing
4:22
you know, it was a movement. And there's
4:24
so many different moving movements that
4:25
are going on around the country. But we
4:28
have something that's really big that's
4:29
going on this weekend. And it all
4:32
started from, you know, this this one
4:34
thought all of these guys getting
4:36
together. And I I
4:37
I'm just happy to be with these guys and
4:39
be able to spread the good word of Black
4:40
Watts, the great gospel of Black Black
4:42
Watts, what we're doing on bikes. Black
4:44
Watts. If people want to join Black
4:46
Watts or to find more information, you
4:47
could go to
4:49
blackwatts.cc.
4:51
Black Watts, w a t t s .cc. .cc.
4:56
That's correct. blackwatts.cc.
4:58
Um
5:00
Chris, let me ask you this.
5:02
What have been the benefits of cycling?
5:06
Wow. That's like saying, "What is life?"
5:09
All right. All right. It gets deep. It
5:12
No, no, it it actually does, right? Like
5:14
so cycling really is a reflection of
5:17
life in many ways, right? Like you know
5:18
how some days you just have tough days.
5:20
You wake up and feel like today is not
5:21
the day. And some days you feel like I
5:23
just don't have it. Other days you wake
5:25
up like, "Let's go. I'm I'm ready for it
5:27
all. It doesn't matter what comes, who
5:28
brings it, I'm here for it all." Cycling
5:31
encompasses all of that. So whether
5:32
it's, you know, you're getting on your
5:34
bike and you're going by yourself, just
5:37
want to spin my legs, release some
5:39
stress, get out in the world, see some
5:41
birds and bees and trees and that sort
5:43
of thing. Or you feel like I want to
5:45
challenge myself and I want to ride fast
5:47
or I want to ride up a hill or
5:50
you know, anything of that nature. Like
5:52
cycling presents itself with a myriad of
5:54
challenges and really it's about
5:56
spinning your legs and continuing and
5:58
not stopping.
5:59
To me, it mirrors life in that same way,
6:02
which is about persistence, consistency,
6:05
you know, and and and perseverance.
6:07
Yes.
6:07
It's just one of those things where
6:10
once your leg stops starts moving, you
6:12
don't want them to stop because you
6:13
don't want to be the person to get off
6:14
on the hill because the hill never
6:15
changes, just like life, right? The hill
6:17
is still going to be there whether
6:18
you're going up in the car, Trace, or or
6:20
or you're walking, right? Like so it's
6:22
the same thing. What you learn to do is
6:24
you learn to adjust, whether it's your
6:25
gearing or what have you, but yeah.
6:27
Chris, well said. This is called Black
6:29
Watts.
6:31
But are all men, Chad, able to join this
6:33
cycling crew? Yes. Of all walks of life.
6:36
Absolutely. It's no different than the
6:38
the Black Lives Matter movement, you
6:40
know? Like as long as you believe in the
6:41
mission and the goals that we we've set
6:44
out to do, whether it's on or off the
6:45
bike, then absolutely you can join Black
6:47
Watts. Okay. So Tone could join.
6:50
Absolutely. Tracy can join. Tracy can
6:52
join. And women. It's not just men. It's
6:54
not just men. Well, look, women were
6:56
always into spinning for quite a long
6:57
time, I think, before a lot of men were
6:59
involved. Whether it was called
7:00
spinning, biking, or cycling, whether
7:03
it's indoors or outdoors. And
7:06
both you, Chris, and Great Rissy touched
7:07
on, and Chad as well, but touching on
7:09
the mental benefits. Like I remember a
7:11
few years ago picking up a New York Post
7:13
and seeing what was the number one mode
7:16
of transportation that increased the
7:18
mental health of workers, and it was
7:20
biking. And I told Sway when we were
7:22
coming back into the studio, you know,
7:24
post quarantine, that I wanted to switch
7:27
up my route here. And so I always I jump
7:30
on a city bike. That's what's up. And I
7:32
go and I go to the I go to the train and
7:33
I drop it off at the train. And so I'm
7:35
wondering, why do you guys think that
7:37
for so many men? Great, you you touched
7:39
on this when you were speaking on your
7:40
wife and her advocacy of spinning and
7:43
biking. Why do you think some men
7:44
initially are like, "I don't know if
7:46
it's for me." I have my theories, but I
7:48
want to hear from y'all. I know. I mean
7:49
Sway just said it.
7:50
said it. The tights. The tights. And the
7:53
seats the seats
7:56
hurt. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So I mean so
7:58
some of it I mean the we we
8:01
Have ANY ADJUSTMENTS BEEN MADE?
8:04
NO, NO, BUT really I mean culturally
8:06
speaking, right? Like um
8:09
cycling tends to be for when you see it
8:12
the way that it's presented right now,
8:14
small
8:16
like really, really small men. In some
8:18
instances, they look like jockeys. Like,
8:20
you know, racing jockeys, right? And
8:22
also they're wearing this this this
8:24
tight stuff all around, you know what I
8:26
mean? Like it's just tight stuff, right?
8:29
And traditionally in our culture, that's
8:30
not what we do, right? I mean, I was
8:32
born in the '70s, so shout out to my
8:35
age, everybody out there that's over 45.
8:37
We doing it, baby. You looking good,
8:38
too. I see you. Black don't crack.
8:41
No, you get tired around five, though.
8:45
Yeah, right. Naps are vital, baby. Naps
8:47
are vital. It's not around five.
8:49
five.
8:50
But the Lycra, right? Like the Lycra is
8:52
something that's a challenge. And I
8:53
think all of us went through that,
8:54
right? Like we talked about like, yeah,
8:56
I mean, on that first ride, folks had on
8:59
basketball shorts. Right?
9:01
What's really the difference, though?
9:02
Like what is the support that you're
9:03
getting from the tights? Well, it's it's
9:05
a number of things, right? So the tights
9:06
aren't
9:07
Oh, wait, hold on. Can we not say
9:08
tights? This is a kit.
9:10
This is a kit. I'm I'm still Yeah, yeah,
9:12
I'm still a little scarred, all right?
9:13
It takes a little bit. It's a kit. It's
9:15
a kit. It's a
9:16
Explain it here, Greg.
9:17
And and there So the kit comes in two
9:19
Got me out here sounding like a
9:20
superhero.
9:22
You have a jersey, and then you have
9:24
bibs. Okay.
9:25
That's what they're called, right?
9:27
Sometimes the bibs bibs can just be
9:28
shorts, which look like tights, but they
9:31
really have straps and they support you
9:33
in your midsection and in your in your
9:35
lower back. And they also provide, you
9:37
know, support around your thighs and
9:38
your hamstrings and that sort of thing.
9:40
And it keeps your genitalia all in place
9:41
and all that kind of stuff. But really,
9:43
the biggest thing is what they have, and
9:44
it's something called a chamois or
9:46
chammy.
9:47
Um or just a pad, right? Sway, this is
9:50
for you. This info was for you.
9:51
Okay. Okay. I'm I'm taking I'm taking
9:52
notes here. So that helps Sway with that
9:55
seat pain. Okay.
9:57
Yes, cuz you have a pad there to kind of
9:59
help you.
9:59
to know. Can they do they make those for
10:01
Pelotons, too?
10:02
They absolutely do.
10:03
And here But guess what? I got a day
10:05
coming up. But guess what? That seat you
10:07
have may not be the best seat for you.
10:08
I think it's not. It's the one they gave
10:10
me. Yeah, it's Right, you got to think
10:11
about it like shoes. You can't just put
10:13
on any pair of shoes. You got to find
10:14
your right size. You got to find the
10:15
right quality of leather or material
10:17
that works with your foot.
10:18
Yeah.
10:18
The same thing happens on the bicycle.
10:20
Mhm. And even the design of the bicycle,
10:21
now that I think about it, could be
10:23
based on a particular gender or even
10:25
race. Mhm. You know what I mean? As like
10:27
the model for how you design those
10:28
seats.
10:29
Yeah, that's that's something that that
10:31
Chad pointed out to me and and Chris,
10:33
you know, having a proper fitting. Yeah,
10:34
the the fitting is important even on a
10:36
Peloton. You should be fitted because
10:38
when they drop that Peloton off at your
10:40
house, they're just saying like, "Oh,
10:41
how tall are you? All right, perfect.
10:43
We'll just We'll just screw it here. Oh,
10:45
yeah, you're good to go." But really,
10:47
there's so many other elements that go
10:48
into it like your your reach. Yeah. And
10:51
you know, like do you have back pain,
10:53
knee pain? Okay, let's make these
10:55
adjustments. Those things aren't being
10:57
asked by that that Peloton tech tech
10:59
that's dropping the yeah, that's
11:01
dropping it off at your house. They ask
11:02
for your credit card.
11:06
That's it.
11:07
Yeah, that's it. Charge for the app
11:08
every month, too.
11:09
Send that bread. I see this charge come
11:11
up on my I was like, "What is this? OH,
11:13
THE PELOTON?" EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T use
11:15
it, Sway. The Peloton is man, you just
11:17
sit and makes money for its creator,
11:19
boy.
11:21
It's a great investment for them. We got
11:22
Anthony on the line. He's a cyclist.
11:24
Anthony, welcome to the show. Hey,
11:25
Anthony. What's up, Sway? Hey, hey.
11:28
Tracy, Heather, how y'all doing? Doing
11:29
great, man.
11:30
up? So, we got Grey Rizzy, you know,
11:32
Grey give him a round of applause. He
11:33
holds it down. Chris, we got Chris and
11:35
Chad with us and they're Hey, what up?
11:37
They're members of Black Watts, which is
11:38
a cycling crew, a collective of
11:40
individuals. It's open to all men of all
11:43
walks of life, women as well, and kids.
11:46
What's up, Chris? What's up, Chad?
11:48
What's up, Anthony? How you doing,
11:49
brother?
11:50
Pretty good.
11:51
Yeah, I I've been racing I mean,
11:53
actually racing bikes, but I've been
11:55
riding bikes my whole life. Biking is my
11:57
first love.
11:58
And I'm still doing it. I'm 53 years
12:00
old. I've been doing it my entire life.
12:02
I race BMX bikes. Nice. I race
12:06
I don't do a little mountain biking,
12:07
downhill racing. I do some track track
12:11
riding. I do all the commuting.
12:13
Uh you know, I I ride with two groups. I
12:17
race for GT Racers Edge and BMX. Mhm.
12:21
For for commuting and and and hanging
12:23
out, I ride with the Pittsburgh Major
12:25
Taylor Cycling Club.
12:27
Shout out to Major Taylor Cycling Club.
12:28
to a child youth organization called the
12:30
Ruach Cycling Club. So, man, biking's my
12:32
life. So, when I saw you guys doing
12:34
this, I'm like, "I'm down in."
12:36
All right, thank you, man. Thank you.
12:38
Appreciate you calling in. So, so, so
12:40
maybe there's
12:41
Black Watts is a growing organization,
12:44
right? And and then I'm sure you guys
12:46
have a network that goes across the
12:47
country now, right?
12:48
Yep. That's about yeah. Yeah, so so what
12:51
where are you located, Anthony? You in
12:52
Pittsburgh?
12:54
Yeah. Yeah, I I live in Pittsburgh, yep.
12:56
Been here my entire life. Maybe a Black
12:58
Watts chapter in Pittsburgh.
13:00
There it is. Go ahead and hit
13:01
blackwatts.cc to join now. We going to
13:03
look into getting one. There it is.
13:04
blackwatts.cc, man. blackwatts.cc
13:08
and then
13:09
and thank you for your call, man. You're
13:10
a super citizen. Go ahead and do that.
13:12
Oh, Sway in the morning. Yo, how much
13:13
are are these bikes about? Like the best
13:16
bike cuz they are a pretty You got the
13:19
Tracy, you got the right ones, baby.
13:21
They right here.
13:22
We got to financially prepare our
13:25
lives. And they ain't like the ones you
13:26
asked for when you was 10. These ain't
13:28
those city bikes.
13:30
These ain't no
13:31
Ain't no Schwinn frames here, huh?
13:34
Listen, don't you know that meme they
13:35
gave it to me? That's what I tell my
13:36
wife all the time.
13:37
But it's an investment and it's worth
13:39
it. It is tough. Definitely It's more
13:40
than a Peloton. Absolutely.
13:42
Absolutely. Yeah. Give us a range.
13:44
Really?
13:44
So, now given the contraction that has
13:47
happened in the industry, like it your
13:50
entry-level bike will probably cost you
13:51
about 2,500, I think. Okay.
13:53
2,500 to 3,000 and then Just answer the
13:55
question. And not I got I got to do it
13:57
You know what she want to hear. She know
13:58
what she want to know. Can I do it the
13:59
right way? Chris, walk her into it. Low
14:01
end, high end. And then on the high end,
14:03
it can be 15,000, 16,000.
14:05
Wow.
14:05
Yeah. All right, I want to thank Black
14:06
Watts for COMING BY TODAY.
14:10
YOU KNOW YOU KNOW WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT
14:11
THIS BLACK WELL, in riding with Black
14:13
Watts, there's a lot of information that
14:15
goes between all of us, right? All of
14:17
the riders. And in in cycling, it's one
14:19
of the rare sports that you can become a
14:21
pro overnight by just going to the store
14:23
and buying your bike.
14:23
Yeah. You know, in a lot of cases like
14:25
if you want to be a pro basketball
14:26
player, bro a pro baseball player, pro
14:28
football player, it takes time. Takes
14:30
over 10,000 hours, a whole lot of
14:32
weights, a whole lot of training. In
14:33
cycling, you could go to the store, drop
14:35
15,000 dollars, and you look like a pro.
14:38
It does not mean, though, that you're
14:40
going to cycle like one. That's facts.
14:42
That's facts. That's the biggest
14:43
difference, and I see a lot of people
14:45
who have gone out there, they've bought
14:46
and they've invested in a bike cuz they
14:48
think the bike is going to do all the
14:49
work, and that's not the case. It's
14:51
going to make it a little easier, but if
14:53
you're going to spend 15,000 dollars, I
14:55
would say go ahead and get the
14:56
entry-level bike and work your way up.
14:58
Work your way up. Okay, but then also
14:59
say look at it like this.
15:01
Um
15:02
that's a different kind of investment.
15:03
You're investing in your health.
15:05
Health, yeah. There's nothing more
15:06
valuable than that.
15:07
Sway. That's a different kind of
15:09
investment. You're investing in your
15:10
health, right? And and and that that
15:13
that holds a lot more value than a chain
15:15
or a car or whatever material item that
15:17
you you probably purchased that sits
15:19
there and doesn't appreciate. By bike by
15:21
cycling, your health appreciates. The
15:24
same way property does. All right? You
15:27
improve your health, your maybe
15:28
longevity in your life, quality of life,
15:30
so on and so forth. And I do think as
15:33
men, especially as we reach, you know,
15:35
somebody a child of the '70s, we have to
15:38
find different ways to exercise,
15:41
Yeah. to stretch, to move. And cycling
15:44
is an easy way to do it, but it also
15:46
challenges you. So, I I want to suggest
15:48
to all our listeners, first of all,
15:50
Saturday, if you could come out and join
15:53
this Black Watts Day. This is taking
15:55
place where? In Orange, New Jersey.
15:58
Metcalf Park.
15:59
Metcalf Park, 8:00 a.m. They're going to
16:01
do how long is a 20-mile ride?
16:03
20-mile ride. 20-mile ride. That ain't
16:05
you know, it sounds big, but that
16:07
doesn't take long at all.
16:08
It's not like running 20 miles. It's
16:10
yeah, yeah, absolutely. 10 miles out and
16:11
10 miles back.
16:12
And you're going to feel so great cuz
16:15
you're going to finish it and then
16:16
you're going to have the rest of your
16:17
day to recover or do whatever else you
16:20
want to do.
16:20
Well, that's a good point because the
16:22
rest of the day is based around family.
16:23
Yes. So, we have the the family event
16:25
afterwards, which will have face
16:27
painting, bounce houses, and food
16:29
trucks. So, you can invite the whole
16:30
family out.
16:31
Yeah, a good pre-Father's Day
16:32
celebration.
16:33
Absolutely. That's exactly what it's
16:34
about. Saturday, 8:00 a.m.
16:38
Met New Jersey, Metcalf Park.
16:42
Show up, support Black Watts cycling
16:45
