real places just like we did with

wakanda and pulling from cultures from

the continent and um pulling from him in

a way that I was respectful you know

what I was knowledgeable in a way that

would uh Inspire

um the audience that go educate

themselves further

um maybe if they had any identification

with the culture the heart they heads up

higher you know we want to extend that

to to somebody else at the same time

California right our state got a Spanish

um a lot of indigenous folks there with

us you know how their street politics

are my family a lot of indigenous folks

um so the film was was kind of in that

Spirit we went to find a another culture

we could juxtapose with with wakanda's

made some differences

um and go from there that's interesting

see the film which is an incredible

together in Oakland like that and

sometimes you hear around this country

You Hear The Divide that's taking place

between black and brown

um which I think is a a small narrative

but it gets it tends to be Amplified a

lot and so I think this movie in some

ways can be healing and people can
9:47
understand that we do have so many

parallels in our history Lupita I know

that you were born in Kenya Mexico you

were born in Mexico but raised in Kenya

your father took you to Mexico yes okay

yes and so the story of Neymar all right

I wondered if you had did it resonate

with you were you familiar with it prior

to the movie

well the history of of uh the Mayan

people and mesoamerica

um if you will was something that I had

been exposed to when I lived in Mexico

pyramids over there they will they will

tell you about that history so I was

aware of it but had never really had the

kind of personal and empathetic way and

I think that's the power of a film like

this is that it has Mass Appeal so this

history that is little spoken about on a

global platform gets a chance to be

spoken about in an even if it's it's

this is not a factual uh movie it's very

much inspired by that history but the

truth of uh what was taken away from the

Mayans by the Spanish uh you feel it in

this film and it's a it's an entry point

to inquire more and to learn more and

make that history more popular you know

face what was going on kind of pulled me

was just what was on his heart for what

we can do as a team to honor our brother

and that's kind of like where the where

the life got back into me for for sure I

saw Sherry as as a vessel of love and a

of what we're all collectively dealing

about representation it's kind of gone

in stages right and maybe there was once

a time where primarily fair-skinned

black people got the majority of the

roles and it expanded and expanded and

expanded and I think that also

creates an energy of Envy that's created

from the outside world because there has

been so much competition and now we're

seeing oh my goodness so many black

women so many black men can occupy the
17:44
same space at the same time and still
17:46
have their individuality and still be a
17:48
part of the collective but when it does
17:50
come to Envy because that is a part of

the human spectrum of emotions I'm

curious maybe if you Leticia if you can

take this have you ever dealt with Envy

in this industry with another peer

having a role that you're like dang I

really went for it and how are you able

to transcend that because we don't often

community where it's like this is the

next big star you know it'll be like

this is who's taking black Hollywood to

new heights what would you say to

someone who feels uncomfortable with

their peers just appearing to be soaring

above them and then it puts them in a

space of self-doubt

uh it's a great question

um you know I've always placed the

the

urgency back on myself on to say like

how can I read the Times better and make

myself better and prepare myself for

what's to come and and just like read

the space

I I definitely abide by that same rule

of what's for you is going to be for you

we're just also in a really lucky time

that unlike any time before we actually

black leadership and black

black people who are actually telling

these stories yeah so it's so much it's

so less limiting right and the reason

why there was so much uh feelings of

lack is because our stories were being

told for us so they could only see a

limited lens

and now that we're telling our own

stories we see the Nuance we understand

the Nuance we understand that this black

man is going to be telling this story a

lot more clearer and we also need this

black man as well and uh we don't exist

in spaces of you know reduction you know

so it's

this person's not this way just because

they're good or bad they were influenced

by this this and this and we need so

many more people and so many more

moments to tell that story and I think

that's why also our movie's like two

hours and 45 minutes

because you know the thing is it takes a

lot to tell a story like this and to

tell a story of such a big grief and to

tell of all the twists and turns that

comes with that and all the people that

are going to influence that and you know

all of the conflicts that are gonna

web actually spans so I think where

we're at is a place of

really great opportunity because of just

the time like there's there's a sense of

that the spirit of this season what was

about this movie is that that there's

that sense of inevitability that the

second they put us on those slave ships

this movie was coming
