Ladies and gentlemen, man, I'm so proud
0:03
to call this man my brother.
0:05
I used to call him a friend, HB, now I
0:07
call him my brother. I didn't even check
0:09
in with him on THAT ONE.
0:13
I DIDN'T EVEN GET I didn't even get
0:15
permission. He was my brother before he
0:17
even knew he was my brother. I'll send
0:18
y'all pictures of my high top fade.
0:22
Come on, man.
0:23
your eyebrows though?
0:24
TRYING TO WILD OUT.
0:26
UH-HUH.
0:28
Just like he did. That song got just
0:30
play Set It Off is brilliant.
0:33
One of the best written rap songs of all
0:35
time in my opinion.
0:37
It's lovely to see this man out and
0:39
about doing interviews and making sure
0:41
he's present. He's an icon in this game.
0:45
He's broken barriers in this game. He's
0:47
done things people have never done in
0:49
this game. This dude used to change
0:51
outfits
0:52
on his stage show.
0:54
Crazy.
0:55
People weren't doing it like that. He
0:57
danced, he had fashion, he had
0:59
everything. He brought all the
1:00
entertainment and you could not touch
1:02
his bars.
1:04
Many careers have been made and emulated
1:07
his to become who they are. And sure
1:09
there's people who came before him.
1:12
But it's hard to make your mark in the
1:14
game as an MC in the way that he's done.
1:18
And now we're here to celebrate his new
1:19
podcast, Did I Ever Tell You the one
1:22
about? Give it up for the one and only
1:24
Big Daddy KANE, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
1:30
BIG DADDY.
1:31
WHAT UP WITH YOU, KANE?
1:34
OH, I'm great. Everything is good. Great
1:36
to hear y'all.
1:37
Come on, man. It's all love, man. Rich
1:39
Nice called in cuz I told him he was
1:41
going to be on the show. I can't
1:43
I can't even wake up Rich before noon.
1:44
Rich, what up, baby?
1:46
What up, what up, what up, Grand Rising
1:48
Big Daddy?
1:50
My brother, man. Peace and blessings,
1:52
man.
1:53
Peace and blessings.
1:55
Always, man. Kane, what part of the
1:56
country you in right now?
1:58
I'm in North Carolina.
2:00
You're in North Carolina. Man, Kane was
2:02
one of those first people that moved
2:03
down here. We was like, what is this
2:05
North Carolina thing? And And then you
2:07
start seeing a lot of folk. Who else
2:08
live in that area?
2:10
Like from the scene.
2:12
Um I know um
2:14
Daddy Fresh, DJ J- DJ Chill Will,
2:17
Mhm.
2:18
um Special Ed,
2:19
Mhm.
2:19
Special Ed, Super Lover C,
2:21
um
2:22
uh some others I can't really think of
2:24
offhand.
2:25
Mhm.
2:26
Okay.
2:27
Big Daddy Kane, ladies and gentlemen.
2:29
Talk about this Yeah, it's it's amazing,
2:31
man. Hey, bro. Set It Off was one of my
2:34
favorites. Like, you know, that you step
2:37
off and went, "Oh my gosh, what
2:40
How did even do it? It was just perfect,
2:42
man." Did when you recorded Set It Off,
2:45
how many takes did it take? Did you do
2:47
all of that in in one take? Each verse?
2:51
I I believe so. I think that might have
2:53
been one take. Cuz I mean, you know,
2:55
that was something that um I was looking
2:57
forward to doing. Like that was That was
3:00
one of those songs that like I was like
3:02
just like I had an idea, a concept. You
3:04
know, I was listening to James Brown Sex
3:06
Machine. And I was just like tripping on
3:09
the way he start off, you know, do you
3:10
know, moving, grooving. I'mma count it
3:12
off, you know? I was like, I need a song
3:14
like that where I'm already gone before
3:17
the beat even drop.
3:18
You know?
3:19
Mhm.
3:20
So that was like, you know, what I was
3:21
really trying to do with that.
3:24
Uh you know, what I liked about it too
3:26
in the end, Set It Off, and we going to
3:28
have this really, you know, esoteric
3:30
conversation. One of the things that you
3:32
did and and you mentioned James Brown, I
3:34
think of the Stylistics, and I think of
3:36
um Al Green. They used to always talk on
3:39
their records, you know what I mean?
3:41
Like Al Green used to talk to you on the
3:43
records. Even in the end, he'll be
3:44
talking. He'll be, you know, as as
3:46
opposed to just singing. And you did all
3:47
those shout-outs on the end. And you
3:50
know, you
3:52
You know what I mean? I was like, oh
3:53
man, what made you do that? Like was
3:56
that was that just okay, I got to get
3:58
these people off to show them love or
3:59
was that too inspired by something?
4:02
No, that was me just wanting to show,
4:04
you know, you know, my people some love,
4:06
you know, so they could hear their name
4:08
on the radio or whatnot, you know, but I
4:11
mean people used to clown me about that,
4:13
you know, they used to be like, like
4:14
damn man, your third your shout outs is
4:16
like the third verse.
4:18
But you know, Kane, what's up? It's
4:20
Heather. How you doing? How you been? So
4:22
glad that you could join us today on the
4:23
show. Um, it's so crazy cuz for the
4:26
first time that Sway mentioned the shout
4:28
outs, I think I heard you shout out
4:30
blaze blaze. That's the rapper? Like is
4:34
that the same one?
4:34
No, no, no, you know, that's that was
4:36
the term we used to say when we you
4:38
know, um
4:39
you know, like just like etc. You know,
4:41
that was
4:42
etc.
4:43
You know, I'll be with with Sway and
4:45
Heather and blaze blaze.
4:47
Blaze blaze, yeah, I got you. I I wasn't
4:49
sure.
4:50
I thought blaze blaze was a Brooklyn
4:52
gang, Heather. Like on the West Coast he
4:54
was like, oh they got a gang CALLED
4:55
BLAZE BLAZE.
4:59
HE'S STUPID.
5:01
ALL RIGHT, all right, you you you
5:03
talking about blaze blaze when the East
5:04
is in the house.
5:05
Oh, that's what I Yeah, that's what I
5:07
was talking I just was like, wow, Kane
5:09
gave him a shout out way back then. Like
5:11
damn, he was on the come up back
5:13
until like the mid 90s, I think.
5:15
Got you.
5:17
Oh, okay. Okay, man, uh Big Daddy Kane
5:20
is here. I I know the lines are lit up.
5:22
Uh Rich Nice, you want to jump in? I
5:24
mean you called.
5:28
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. See, here's the
5:30
funny part. See, I know Kane, we hung
5:31
out, so it's like uh you know, in the
5:34
public, you know, he's a very serious,
5:36
calm guy, but but Kane got a sense of
5:39
humor like a stand up comedian. Y'all
5:41
don't understand how funny this brother
5:42
is. So with with all these experiences
5:45
and stories, have you ever thought about
5:47
turning any of them into screenplays?
5:51
Um
5:52
well, um I mean, you know, right now at
5:54
the moment, um we're we're in the
5:56
process of doing a whole um biopic on
5:59
the Juice Crew. You know, where the
6:00
lives of myself, Biz Markie,
6:03
um MC Shan, Shante, Marley Marl,
6:07
Mr. Magic, Fly Ty, you know, are going
6:09
to be told. You know, so that's in the
6:11
process now.
6:13
You know, so you'll hear a lot of those
6:14
stories.
6:15
Yeah.
6:17
Fly Ty, Juice Crew, Cold Chillin', um
6:21
is is it going to tell the story of the
6:22
Juice Crew or or Cold Chillin' too as a
6:24
label or encompass all of it in in in
6:27
one in one biopic?
6:29
Um pretty much, you know, squeezing it
6:31
all into one, but mainly the story of
6:35
the Juice Crew origin and all um the
6:39
members, you know, cuz I mean, you know,
6:41
it's it's it's it's really, you know,
6:43
Juice Crew started by Mr. Magic, you
6:45
know.
6:45
Mhm.
6:46
Um and, you know, I I really wanted it
6:49
to be told through his eyes cuz people
6:51
don't really understand how important
6:52
this brother was, you know, being the
6:54
first person to play hip-hop on radio
6:57
and being that person to break so many
6:59
different artists back in the '80s up
7:01
until the early '90s, you know. Um you
7:04
know, people don't really understand
7:05
that importance and then people just
7:06
don't, you know, they don't they don't
7:07
they they're unaware of, you know, the
7:09
process and all the gangster stuff that
7:12
went on behind the scenes to, you know,
7:14
get it to that point, you know.
7:16
Can Can you give us an example of cuz
7:19
see now, Khayan, you do a story that I
7:20
ever tell I mean, you're doing a podcast
7:22
that I ever tell you the one about, so
7:24
you can't hold no secrets. Um
7:27
can you give me an example a specific
7:29
example of the gangster stuff that went
7:31
on? Because Rich is constantly Me and
7:33
Rich go around and we have these
7:34
conversations with younger folks in the
7:36
game and Rich will tell them like the
7:38
music business was really built by
7:41
gangsters. You know what I mean? Like if
7:43
you trace it back to its origins, there
7:44
was a lot of gangster activity taking
7:47
place behind the scene in the music
7:48
business. Can you give us an example of
7:50
what was going on back then that you
7:52
that you witnessed?
7:54
Okay, well well first and foremost
7:57
before I even go there, let me just say
7:58
that
7:59
a lot of that gangster activity that
8:01
Rich is
8:02
talking referring to,
8:04
his trouble making ASS PROBABLY STARTED
8:10
THAT'S ANOTHER STORY THOUGH. OKAY.
8:15
BUT I MEAN
8:16
YEAH, I mean you know
8:19
Huh?
8:20
I can't shake it. I can't shake that
8:22
one.
8:23
No, no, no. I'm never letting that go.
8:26
I'm never letting that go. But I love
8:27
you.
8:33
You're my brother for life, but yeah,
8:34
I'm taking them two incidents to the
8:36
grave. But um
8:39
But I mean yeah, I mean you know, from I
8:41
mean you know, you know, stuff you know,
8:43
concerning
8:44
you know, the Fatal brothers from Queens
8:47
to my dude Big Butch from Brooklyn.
8:51
Yeah, it was a lot of you know, you
8:52
know, street stuff going on you know, on
8:54
the inside. And it's all you know, we we
8:56
know we we we talking about that, you
8:58
know.
8:59
Cuz I you know, we want the story to be
9:01
told properly.
9:02
Okay.
9:03
A lot of people understand you know,
9:04
it's it's bigger than just hip hop. It
9:07
is hip hop. But it's even bigger cuz I
9:09
mean we talking about you know, we
9:11
talking about fashion. We're talking
9:13
about you know,
9:15
um
9:17
like
9:18
careers starting. We you know, we we
9:20
talking about radio personalities. You
9:23
know I mean yeah, I think it's an
9:24
amazing story and everybody's going to
9:25
really enjoy it.
9:26
You got to check out citizens did I ever
9:28
tell you the one about the 5.1 stereo
9:32
sound that these stor- stories are being
9:34
presented in.
9:35
What can how what how different is it
9:38
the way it sounds on this podcast and
9:41
then a normal podcast? Would you say?
9:43
I mean it's it's it's it's crazy, Sway,
9:46
because I mean, you know, it's in 5.1
9:48
surround
9:49
surround sound. So, it's the type of
9:52
thing where
9:53
I'm telling a story about being at a
9:55
block party and, you know, in the '70s
9:57
and the DJ throwing on, say, "Love Is
10:00
the Message" or "We Got Our Own Thing"
10:01
and you're hearing that, you know, left
10:03
and right. And I'm talking about the ice
10:05
cream truck pulling up and you're
10:06
hearing a ice cream truck behind you.
10:09
You know, if you're listening, you know,
10:10
in surround sound, you're hearing the
10:11
ice cream truck pulling up behind you
10:13
and
10:14
it sound like, you know, you know,
10:16
someone sipping a beer right next to me.
10:18
It's crazy. It's crazy. So, it's like it
10:21
it kind of makes you feel like as a
10:23
listener, it makes you feel like you're
10:24
there.
10:26
Mhm.
10:26
I love that. Tracy, want to talk to BDK?
10:29
Yes, please. Kane, when you mentioned
10:32
fashion, it just had me thinking about
10:35
how the chains in hip-hop have changed.
10:38
You know what I mean? Thinking about
10:40
seeing those humongous, gorgeous,
10:43
dazzling, in-your-face rope chains that
10:45
you had and then how things moved over
10:47
where we had, you know, like the Cuban
10:49
link chains. And then now it's to the
10:51
point where we've had a lot of artists
10:53
who say they don't really wear chains as
10:55
much. Or we see that the chains aren't
10:57
the first thing that catches your eye.
10:59
They're actually tucked into the shirt.
11:01
Can you talk to us about
11:03
that evolution I guess of chain? Like
11:06
what made it such a moment to have big
11:09
ones and then why do you think that they
11:11
slowly started kind of getting smaller
11:14
and more
11:15
humble?
11:17
Modest.
11:17
Um
11:18
Honestly, I really couldn't answer that.
11:21
I mean, you know, it was something that,
11:22
you know, back then we were excited to
11:25
do because we seen cats like Run-DMC and
11:28
the Fat Boys with heavy jewelry on. So,
11:31
when we came out as artists, we wanted
11:33
to, you know, follow suit and pretty
11:34
much do the same thing. But, as far as
11:36
me, in my case, it was like I would wear
11:38
them on stage at night, and when I come
11:41
off stage, I got all types of cuts and
11:43
bruises cuz I was dancing. So, the
11:45
chains those heavy chains would hit me
11:46
in the face, and then I just, you know,
11:48
got tired of wearing them. But, it
11:50
would, you know, I would wear maybe to
11:51
the club or something like that. But, I
11:53
mean, I stopped wearing them like out on
11:54
stage.
11:56
That makes sense. Yep.
11:58
I didn't know the chains used to attack
12:00
you, Kane.
12:03
Yeah, all types of nicks and bruises,
12:05
man. So, I was just like, you know, let
12:06
me just chill.
12:07
Right. It's an extra workout, too.
12:10
They add so much weight.
12:12
I rely on the hot sauce staying in the
12:14
pots, man, you know.
12:16
Yeah, it is, man.
12:17
Too much.
12:18
Big Daddy Kane is here. Um, I noticed
12:21
when you mentioned that you was going to
12:22
you guys doing the biopic on the on the
12:24
Juice Crew with everybody involved, I I
12:26
noticed I didn't hear nothing from I
12:28
didn't hear anything from Heather cuz,
12:30
you know, she was Boogie Down
12:31
Productions. So, I was going to ask
12:32
Heather how she felt that y'all have
12:34
something coming, Heather.
12:35
I ain't got nothing to do with that.
12:39
Chris is the founding member, and it was
12:42
rest in peace to Scott La Rock, who I
12:44
never got a chance to even meet. So,
12:46
that group formed way before I was even
12:48
involved. You got to remember, Sway, um,
12:51
and Citizens of Sway in the Morning, so
12:53
I would say Boogie Down Productions came
12:54
out in like '80 '86, '85. I didn't, uh,
12:59
meet Chris until 1990.
13:02
Mm.
13:02
So, that was So, that was long before,
13:05
you know what I mean? Like, Miss Melody
13:07
was down, D Nice was down, but I didn't
13:09
meet Chris until, um, my first year
13:12
college.
13:13
Okay. All right, cool.
13:15
But, that's a that's an interesting
13:16
point that you bring up though because
13:17
Kane and Chris was actually friends. So,
13:20
will there be a representation of of KRS
13:22
in this biopic cuz you and Kane were
13:24
boys.
13:26
I mean, you and KRS
13:27
Yeah,
13:28
yeah, no, absolutely.
13:30
I mean, because it's like you got to
13:31
talk about the BDP Juice Crew war, you
13:34
know, with with Chris and Shan, you
13:36
know, so that has to be mentioned. And
13:38
then, you know, you know, also
13:40
you know, the fact that you know, like
13:42
you said, me and Chris was was was
13:44
tight. Cuz I mean, a lot of people don't
13:46
know, you know, I mean, KRS and Ms.
13:47
Melody, they helped me move out of my
13:49
parents' crib. You know?
13:50
Really?
13:51
So.
13:52
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I remember like you
13:54
said.
13:54
from Brooklyn, that's why. She was from
13:55
Brooklyn.
13:57
Yeah. Me and KRS carrying a big gray
14:00
velvet couch down the stairs, and Ms.
14:02
Melody had this big ass 25-in TV up
14:04
under her arm like a football. Like like
14:07
yeah. Like we moved to I I moved to
14:11
Canarsie, and we set set everything up,
14:13
and opened a six-pack of Heineken and
14:15
watched The Color Purple.
14:18
Wow.
14:20
Man.
14:21
You can't talk about that story, but
14:23
it's facts.
14:23
Oh,
14:24
yeah. Well, that that Man, that's a
14:26
hip-hop ass story if I ever heard one,
14:28
man. What you saying?
14:29
Exactly.
14:31
Uh man, I love it. Big Daddy Kane is
14:33
It's a lot of folks um on on the line
14:36
for you, Kane, right now. But citizens,
14:38
we really want you to support their
14:39
podcast. That's what it's all about.
14:41
Kane only going to give us some of the
14:42
stories. A lot of them we know, but you
14:44
got to go listen to the rest of them at
14:46
Did I Ever Tell You the One About? And
14:49
they could find that on all DSPs, Kane?
14:51
Like it's everywhere?
14:53
Um I believe so, but definitely Apple
14:55
and Spotify. Um you can find it there.
14:58
Did I Ever Tell You the One About? Big
15:00
Daddy Kane.
15:01
And yeah, I mean, you know, I I tried
15:03
to, you know, touch on everything from
15:06
my childhood to my first introduction to
15:09
hip-hop in the '70s and my career, and
15:13
you know, the whole span of it and
15:14
everything that I've I've I've been
15:16
through and all the
15:17
legendary people that I've worked with.
15:19
So, I mean, I hope that everyone enjoys
15:22
it.
15:22
Um do you speak about the business side,
15:25
Kane? Cuz I was always curious with when
15:27
I was watching you guys. You know, we
15:29
were coming up, too, but we were taking
15:31
cues. You know, we were playing your
15:33
music. You know, we were taking cues
15:35
from you. Um and we were trying to learn
15:37
from the outside, but I realized once
15:39
even King Tech and I started signing
15:40
deals that, oh my gosh, man, it's still
15:43
it's it's nothing was ever
15:44
artist-friendly.
15:46
You know, did you did you um
15:49
ever have a uh uh
15:51
a a time in your life where you when you
15:52
started realizing you came to the
15:54
realization that, damn, man, I don't
15:56
like this deal. You know, and I need to
15:59
become more wise about the business, and
16:01
and I need to obtain better deals. Was
16:04
there ever a point in your life when
16:05
that happened?
16:07
I mean, there were uh there was a point
16:10
where that happened.
16:12
There was a point where, you know, I was
16:14
unhappy with um
16:17
um the direction that I felt that, you
16:19
know, certain people were trying to take
16:21
me. And there was also a point where I
16:24
had to say, you know what?
16:26
Even though it's a new album coming out,
16:29
I'm good. And I just I just I just
16:32
stopped. I just left it everything
16:33
alone. And that's that's actually when I
16:35
moved to North Carolina. I was just
16:36
like, I don't want to do this no more.
16:38
You know?
16:39
Mhm. And which album was that? Uh which
16:42
uh which point which album was that?
16:45
It was an independent album called uh
16:47
Veteran's Day.
16:48
Um and you know, we had just completed
16:51
it, and I had met Joan Jett, and she was
16:54
like so down to earth and so super cool,
16:57
and we did a distribution deal with her
16:59
on her label um Blackheart. And you
17:02
know, I was really excited, and then
17:03
something was said one day at a meeting,
17:06
and it just pissed me off to the point
17:08
where I was like, you know what?
17:11
I I I I enjoy my freedom too much. Let
17:14
me let me let me leave this alone.
17:16
I'm good.
17:17
What was Kane, I I know you telling
17:19
these stories on the podcast, but I it
17:21
I've walked away from six-figure deals
17:24
because somebody wanted me and King Tech
17:26
to not play Common on our radio show cuz
17:29
they said it wasn't mainstream enough.
17:31
It was different artists we was playing,
17:33
even yourself.
17:34
And that was enough to make me go screw
17:36
it. And it was a six-figure deal, but I
17:39
was in pain.
17:41
You know what I mean? Afterwards. What
17:43
was it that was said that made you go
17:45
screw it?
17:48
Um I mean it was it was basically a type
17:52
of situation where like um I was dealing
17:55
with something that I felt was sabot-
17:57
sabotage, you know?
17:59
Where someone thought that they knew and
18:01
understood hip hop and they didn't.
18:04
And then they said something real
18:05
reckless and had a lot of Joan Jett
18:08
people looking at me like like, you
18:10
know, I could feel them looking at me
18:11
like, "Wow, this is you know, who who
18:13
who's representing you?"
18:15
You know, and I'm like, "You know what?
18:17
I'm good.
18:19
I'm good.
18:20
I'm good.
18:22
They don't know, man. They They better
18:23
watch some old videos of Kane, you know,
18:26
like in the vapors. You know how he
18:27
walking over You got You got to know the
18:28
old Kane, man. That dude was lucky you
18:30
was just good AND WALKED AWAY.
18:34
HE LUCKY you just walked away.
18:36
Uh man, Big Daddy Kane is here. I'm
18:38
going to open up these phone lines. We
18:39
got Yolanda on the line from Nashville.
18:41
Yolanda, grand risings.
18:43
Hey, Yolanda.
18:45
Hey, I cannot believe this.
18:48
I can't believe this.
18:50
But I am the biggest Big Daddy Kane fan
18:53
since 1988.
18:55
I even followed him when he was in
18:57
Meteor Man, and that was not a good
18:59
movie to me, but he was good.
19:03
And I watched him in Posse.
19:06
But I'm just want to give you
19:09
your props
19:10
um for everything that you've done for
19:12
our culture because I'm from your era
19:16
and um
19:18
I just I'm just praying I was praying
19:20
that I wouldn't pass out. I had to text
19:21
my husband before I called in because I
19:27
the biggest Big Daddy Kane fan and my
19:30
husband gives me a pass with Big Daddy
19:32
Kane. So, that's how much you mean to
19:35
me.
19:36
Damn, I appreciate you I appreciate the
19:38
love.
19:39
That's next level.
19:40
That is next level.
19:42
If you ever if you ever meet Robert
19:44
Townsend to complain about media, man,
19:47
make sure you throw a few jabs about him
19:48
making me dye my hair blonde, too. Let
19:51
him know.
19:52
I'll do that. I got your back.
19:55
All right.
19:55
Thank you.
19:56
You're you're you're citizen Yolanda.
19:59
What up, Yolanda? Yo, yo, Sway in the
20:00
morning.
20:01
Thank you, Tracy.
20:02
Bye-bye.
20:02
Yo, yeah.
20:04
Damn.
20:05
Kane was a blonde man. I didn't
20:07
We thought we lost you, Kane.
20:10
I'm just kidding. I was just in the
20:11
movie.
20:16
What are
20:16
you doing? Okay.
20:19
Hey, man, we got one of our road
20:20
warriors on the line. Rashad is on the
20:22
side.
20:24
Yo, yo, yo.
20:26
What up, family?
20:26
Sway, what's good? Yo, what's up, homie?
20:28
Kane. What's up with everybody on
20:30
All right.
20:31
Hey, Kane, I just want to say, man,
20:32
you're the realest. You've been real
20:34
since you came out, homie. And you know,
20:37
all the homies love you, man. And and
20:39
little Yogi Before I start driving, man,
20:42
I was in the feds, man, and yo, when I
20:44
tell you, man, they they they put MP3
20:46
players and and they've everybody know
20:49
when you was in the feds when they put
20:50
them MP3 play MP3 players on on
20:52
commissary, everybody ain't got Big
20:55
Daddy Kane. That was That was the first.
20:57
They had to go get you. You know what I
20:59
mean? So, you made a lot of brothers,
21:00
man, every day feel good. But I was in
21:03
Atlantic City, man, cuz I'm from Jersey.
21:05
And that concert that y'all had, the old
21:07
school, you know you tore it down, man.
21:10
Lady B there. It It was like back in the
21:12
days, man, when you was rocking all the
21:14
fresh fresh concerts and all that. So,
21:16
that's where I come from, man, and and I
21:18
come from your era. And your era was the
21:21
realest. And I'm trying to say this this
21:23
era right now,
21:24
it can't touch the era that you was in.
21:26
And I tell my son every day,
21:29
and I say, "You give me one You give me
21:31
three rappers right now that can do
21:32
anything with Big Daddy Kane." And I'm
21:34
everything thing I told him, man, he
21:36
can't come up with one. But I always
21:37
want to say thank you, man. You was the
21:39
realest in your sway. Everybody, man, I
21:42
respect what y'all doing. But right now
21:44
I'm in North Carolina right now. I'm in
21:45
North Carolina right now, man. I'm
21:47
delivering right now.
21:49
Get it, baby. Come on, man. Road
21:50
Warriors May SiriusXM. Thank you,
21:52
Rashad.
21:53
Thank you, homie.
21:54
Yeah. He He got me curious. I'm
21:57
wondering what year
21:59
what year he was in the bank with MP3s.
22:01
Cuz I remember you know, I remember back
22:03
when
22:04
when my albums came out, I remember
22:05
sending some
22:07
to my people in Sing Sing, and they was
22:10
like, "Nah, we don't even have CD
22:11
players. You know, you send it send a
22:13
cassette next time."
22:14
Yeah. Oh, damn. he hung up. But if
22:17
he call back, we'll find out. They
22:18
didn't even have CDs.
22:20
Cassettes, man.
22:21
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, this is like I think
22:23
'89. I think '89 I was sending something
22:25
to my dude Sing Sing.
22:27
Mhm. I love that, man.
22:30
D D from Florida is on the line. Go
22:32
ahead, D. We got Kane on the line.
22:34
D?
22:35
What's good?
22:35
What's good? What's good, Sway? What's
22:37
good, Heather Tracy? What's going on?
22:39
What's up, bro?
22:41
Not much. This the Road Warrior
22:42
DeAngelo, baby boy.
22:43
Oh, DeAngelo.
22:44
Yeah, what's good, baby? It's Maryland,
22:46
matter of fact. How are you?
22:48
What's up?
22:49
I want Yeah, I want to shout out Kane,
22:50
man. You look
22:52
congratulations on your podcast and
22:54
everything you accomplished. I have one
22:56
question for you, bro. Yo, God bless the
22:58
dead
22:59
Big L. When you did Platinum Plus, bro,
23:02
I already know by that era, you know,
23:04
you were kind of like going out a little
23:05
bit, but when you got on Platinum Plus,
23:07
you had to come on there and show people
23:09
like, "Look, I still got it." Because on
23:11
Platinum Plus, man, you just it was just
23:13
different. Here you the way you rhymed
23:15
on that joint, it was just different,
23:17
and I respect you on that joint, fam.
23:20
I appreciate it, my brother, but I mean,
23:23
um real spill, um no, actually I didn't
23:25
have to show people that I still got it,
23:27
you know, because I never lost it, my
23:29
dude. You know, it's just
23:31
there were certain songs, you know.
23:33
I like to make a variety of songs, you
23:35
know, sometimes I like to spit it for
23:37
sometimes I like to spit it for, you
23:39
know, for for for my for my hood people,
23:40
and I sometimes I like to spit it for
23:42
the ladies, sometimes I like to spit it
23:43
for my mature crowd, sometimes for the
23:45
youth, you know. But what I will say is
23:47
that, you know, I mean, I I was very,
23:50
you know, I just really wish that that
23:51
could have been a song that me and Big L
23:53
did together, you know, I wish we could
23:55
have been in the studio together,
23:57
writing our bars together, you know,
23:59
that type of vibe, But rest in peace to
24:02
Big L.
24:02
Hey D, thanks for your question, man.
24:04
You're a citizen.
24:05
Sweet the morning, shout out to you,
24:07
DeAngelo.
24:08
Hey, we got Rashad back. Rashad.
24:10
Hey hey yo yo, hey Kane, I'mma tell you
24:12
when the MP3s came out. Now, the state
24:15
of New York didn't have it, but that's
24:17
when the feds and anybody out there
24:19
listening, they going to tell you. I did
24:21
17 and a half years in there, bro, and I
24:24
ain't hot, and they going to know what
24:25
you talking about. I ain't no rat. So,
24:27
when when you came in the feds, the MP3s
24:30
came out. I want to say they came out I
24:33
want to say in 2000
24:36
maybe nine, maybe 2008.
24:39
That's when they put the computers in
24:41
there, you can write your family. So,
24:44
what happened, how it used to work then,
24:46
it worked like that now. You'd go in
24:48
there and you look for artists. So, you
24:51
we had to go to the administration to
24:53
say, "Yo, we want Big Big Kane on here.
24:56
We want this artist, we want that.
24:58
Everybody got Big Daddy Kane first where
25:00
I was at. I was in Fairton in Jersey. So
25:03
I had came from Lewisburg. That was a
25:05
penitentiary. So when we went to we went
25:07
there we went there we got to and
25:09
everybody had you. So when you was on
25:11
the weight pile working out, if you got
25:13
your if you got Kane on your don't say
25:15
to me yo. Big Daddy Kane's on.
25:19
I love it.
25:20
If he was in the state he was in the
25:22
state you probably had it better than
25:23
Cassius Clay anyway. So yeah I I I can
25:26
dig it.
25:27
Well some parts of it was good, you know
25:29
what I mean? But but the one thing that
25:31
changed the whole game is you can get
25:33
that music. Now back then I was going
25:35
hard so I wasn't too much on R&B but I
25:37
was hard on Kane. And I I listened to
25:40
Kane. And it's it's one freestyle you
25:43
got and I can't get the name and I tried
25:45
to get they used to play it on LL's
25:47
joint all the time. It's a freestyle.
25:49
And like yo you going off and every time
25:52
it'd be like 1:00 in the morning when it
25:53
come on man. I'd be driving and I'd be
25:55
trying to stay up. So I can't get the
25:58
name of this man. I can't.
25:59
They play it on Rock the Bells?
26:01
Rock the Bells. Yeah they they was
26:03
playing it on Rock the Bells. It's like
26:05
a freestyle. And every time I hear it I
26:07
call my homie I'll be like yo what's
26:09
this? He like I don't know. You can't
26:10
beat underneath it? You know the beat
26:12
underneath it?
26:13
Uh let me see. I want to say it's um it
26:16
might be on that Get Raw beat.
26:21
But he's freestyling.
26:23
And he's going crazy. Like I'm I'm
26:25
saying like like he's killing it. But
26:27
you know I tell everybody man like homie
26:29
said
26:29
like you just checked him you never lost
26:31
it. Only thing I say go to a Big Daddy
26:34
Kane show man you going to see for
26:35
yourself. Homie ain't lose it. He ain't
26:38
lose it. And like we about the same age.
26:41
And yo homie I ain't in bad shape. I
26:43
can't do that you do. I'll be out
26:45
of breath on the dance floor. You feel
26:47
what I'm saying?
26:48
Give it up for Rashad y'all. I love your
26:50
passion man. Hey man.
26:52
Rashad is different because Rashad like
26:55
the prisons that he's talking about like
26:57
he must be calling from like a 609 area
27:00
like that's South Jersey. Like so Sway
27:02
for you so you can have an idea that's
27:04
going down towards Atlantic City and all
27:05
that. Like Pleasantville, Atlantic City,
27:08
Lakewood like all of that area.
27:10
Okay. All right, bro. He definitely got
27:12
a
27:13
You need You need to write a book,
27:14
Rashad.
27:16
All right.
27:16
Hey, listen, man. I I do but I try to
27:19
talk to the kids, man. Cuz in the feds
27:21
right now, I want everybody to know our
27:23
brothers is struggling with this COVID.
27:25
So everybody know on this platform,
27:28
Sway, our brothers is struggling in the
27:30
feds. They dying and they giving them
27:32
Motrin. Motrin ain't curing nothing. I
27:34
want everybody to know that. Our
27:36
people's dying in the feds right now and
27:38
that's the the government ain't
27:39
telling us. But so thank y'all. Hey,
27:41
Kane, stay up. Next time, man, wherever
27:44
you at, I'm coming, homie. All right.
27:46
Y'all be easy. Stay up.
27:48
Hey, you be very safe, too, Kane.
27:51
Rashad's one of us. If he show up,
27:53
you're very safe.
27:57
Before Sway you had all of Jersey up
27:59
together.
28:00
I I love his energy. I love his
28:02
energy. Got to love it, man. Hey, man,
28:03
I'm going to say this
28:05
Make sure y'all get that I'll Be Telling
28:06
You the One About
28:08
podcast. Make sure y'all support Big
28:09
Daddy Kane.
28:11
Facts.
28:11
I love you, son. I love seeing when you
28:13
did the pandemic virtual show
28:16
from the house and seeing your son there
28:17
and I'm sure it must be amazing, man,
28:20
when my daughter get to see me now and
28:23
see, "Oh, okay, this is what you was
28:24
doing when I was growing up." And now
28:27
she could go back and see the history
28:28
and see how people received received me
28:31
and her Uncle Kane tagged us. It's the
28:33
most gratifying feeling, man. What is it
28:35
like to see your son see how people
28:38
revere you?
28:40
What is that like for you?
28:42
Back in the days on a song I said that
28:46
I'm not trying to say that I'm the
28:47
baddest or portray that role but I'm up
28:50
the top two and my father's getting old.
28:53
That was you know some little slick talk
28:55
from our five on the black hand side.
28:58
But for my son
29:00
that's real spill.
29:03
He take that to heart. Like he really
29:05
feel like yo you had your time time.
29:07
It's my turn right now.
29:10
Like he was pissed last night he
29:11
couldn't jump on Clubhouse with me. Like
29:14
he he
29:17
that little dude is dead serious. He
29:20
wants it bad and I'm going to give it to
29:22
him.
29:23
Yeah man stand right by his side. He's
29:25
an amazing young man Kane and and um you
29:28
have some amazing stories man. Them kids
29:30
be wanting the spotlight too man.
29:33
