Okay, so if you've struggled at all with the CPA exams so far, whether that means that you've just looked through the materials and you feel overwhelmed, if you've started the study process and you just feel like you're not making progress, or maybe you've even taken a few sections and failed those sections
0:19
Whatever it is, if inside you're not feeling confident about your study process, then this video will help you
0:26
there are three things that this is really going to come down to anyone that's struggling with
0:33
the exams is really struggling with one of these three things the three things are retention
0:41
study methods and then the third one is time itself not having enough
0:56
time in the day. So what are we talking about here? These two are obvious, but retention
1:03
how do you learn all the information you need to learn in a short enough time and remember
1:09
it well enough to go into the testing center on test day and pass the exams? That is what people
1:15
find so difficult, especially with FAR and REG with how much information there is. So we have a few
1:22
key strategies that we teach related to retention. We teach ongoing retention. You know
1:30
when you think about it, most review courses, they don't necessarily come with instructions
1:35
You kind of the, if you read it between the lines, you would just assume that you need to
1:42
log in, watch every video lecture, watch every chapter, take every quiz, you know, learn every
1:48
question every practice simulation. And again, for far and reg, just those two sections alone
1:54
that amount of information is absolutely huge. And that's why people get so overwhelmed when they log into their review
2:00
course and they see everything that in there So the big thing with retention is that in the traditional way of studying you go through your review course by chapter however that organized chapter one chapter two
2:13
you know, all the way to whatever it is, chapter 20 or chapter 30. And the weeks go by
2:19
but by the time you're at the end chapters, it's been weeks or even months since you studied the
2:26
first few chapters. So it's very common for people to feel like, okay, I'm far as tomorrow
2:33
and I'm realizing that I have forgotten everything that I studied in the beginning. That's a
2:39
very common experience. And so we have a few strategies where you spend 30 minutes a day
2:46
re-reviewing and you do that in a certain way so that as time goes on, your retention and
2:52
comprehension, you know, goes like this, whereas normally it would just go like this
2:59
So you want that retention and comprehension to be constantly improving as time goes on
3:04
So that on test day, your overall comprehension and retention of all the topics is up here
3:12
Instead of getting to a few days before the exam and realizing your comprehension is down here
3:19
and you have to do a big, nasty... final review, where you're basically trying to relearn everything
3:26
So that's retention. The study methods, there are active study methods, and there are passive study methods
3:36
Most people spend their time on passive study methods. These are things like watching a video lecture or highlighting a chapter
3:48
It's very passive, but it allows someone to think, okay, I'm. I'm studying right now, you know, start the timer
3:56
This counts for my four hours today. But it's too easy to just zone out of a video lecture
4:01
or you're not really gonna learn the hard concepts by highlighting formulas and things like that Active study methods on the other hand these force information into your brain It forces you to consider the context of how things are being asked
4:19
how it relates to the overall big picture. The bottom line is we cover these in the training
4:26
but you need to be spending 80 to 90% of your study time
4:31
doing these active study methods. And again, we'll cover what those are in the training
4:35
So the third one is time itself. When I was studying for the exams, I had four to five hours a day, my first time around, I had three months to study for far
4:46
And I put in the effort. I mean, I would watch the video lectures
4:50
I would struggle through reading the chapter. I would struggle through the questions. I didn't really know how to study
4:57
And I ended up failing that section. And at this point, I had started my job full-time, working full-time in public accounting
5:07
but I wanted to pass more than ever. So I thought, okay, I have two hours at the most in the morning to sit down with my review course and actually sit and study
5:19
The rest of the time, I'm going to have to make this up in little chunks or study from my phone
5:25
I didn't know what I was going to do, but I was more motivated than ever. And so I just figured out how to leverage my time
5:32
There are a few different ways to do that, primarily what we're going to teach you on the training
5:37
is how to cut that main study session in half. So if you're supposed to be hitting three to four hours a day in studying
5:43
or if you're on a tight timeline and your review course is telling you
5:48
you need to study five to six hours a day, we can show you how to accomplish your main study session in just two hours a day
5:57
And there's no magic tricks involved. Again, when we go through this on the training
6:03
it's a very coherent, it's common sense approach. but it's something you haven't heard before
6:10
And we going to weave these three things into a cohesive study program that you can apply to whatever review course you using And when you have all three of these things working together they all improve each other and it makes the study process feel almost easy
6:28
As an example of that, my fourth section was reg. And I wanted to be done, obviously
6:35
I had three out of the way. And I had this, I just had my study process down to a science
6:41
I had this figured out. I was feeling really good about the material. I was ahead of schedule and we had an out-of-town audit that I didn't want to deal with the test around
6:54
So anyways, there were a few factors, but I actually paid the money to move my test forward two weeks
7:00
and take it two weeks sooner than I was planning just to get it done
7:05
And like I said, I had the study process down. I went in, I felt good about it
7:10
I passed the test. Best day of my life when I saw that passing score on my first
