Founded as a fortified Spanish settlement in the 18th century, Montevideo developed around a strategic natural bay where traces of the city’s historic walls and military structures can still be seen today. Footage from the capital showed landmarks including Plaza Independencia, the historic Puerta de la Ciudadela gateway, the Legislative Palace and the city’s coastline stretching along the waterfront. The old quarter of Ciudad Vieja remains one of Montevideo’s best-preserved historic districts, known for its colonial buildings, museums, cafes, bookstores and art spaces. Montevideo is also recognized for La Rambla, the city’s waterfront promenade where residents gather to watch sunsets and drink traditional mate tea. The city’s cultural identity continues to be shaped by tango and candombe traditions, while its coastal setting, green spaces and slower pace of life have helped define Montevideo as one of the region’s most recognizable capitals.
