UK: Protesters Replace British Flags With "Tax The Rich" Banners In Clacton.
Jul 1, 2026
Clacton-on-Sea, United Kingdom - June 30, 2026 Seven supporters of the nonviolent civil-resistance group Take Back Power took to the streets of Frinton-on-Sea, part-time home to Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader and Clacton MP, where they hoisted pink and yellow flags carrying the message "Tax the rich" on lamp posts while removing England flags and Union Jacks. The group is calling on the UK government to establish a permanent citizen-led assembly, known as the House of the People, with the power to tax extreme wealth. Wilf, a 24-year-old student taking part in the action, said politicians including Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage had abandoned seaside towns while protecting the interests of billionaires. He said the campaign aimed to push for a wealth tax and put ordinary people first through a House of the People. A spokesperson for Take Back Power said the group was reclaiming national flags as symbols of community and welcome while promoting the message, "Tax the super rich." The group said extreme wealth should be taxed to support communities, public services and people, and argued that a citizen-led assembly should decide how to tax extreme wealth. Take Back Power said it would continue nonviolent action until the government makes what it considers a meaningful response to its demand.
