VARIOUS OF EMERGENCY TEAMS SEARCHING THROUGH REEDS AND STREAM BEDSHATAY, TÜRKİYE - MAY 21: Torrential overnight rain and flash flooding killed at least three people in Türkiye's southern Hatay province on Thursday, May 21, as regional rescue operations continued following severe weather. One of two people swept away by floodwaters in the Samandag district was found dead, according to the Hatay governor’s office. In the Defne district, a driver died after his car plunged into a creek when a section of a road collapsed during the heavy rain. A 15-year-old child also died in the Antakya district after a hillside house collapsed onto a road during the downpour. The flooding and accompanying landslides caused widespread damage to roads, vehicles, homes, and agricultural land across several districts. Coast guard teams rescued 20 people who had become stranded by floodwaters in Defne. Hatay Governor Mustafa Masatli said emergency services received more than 1,000 distress calls, and hundreds of personnel remain deployed across the region. Authorities suspended classes for one day in Samandağ, one of the hardest-hit areas, as well as at five schools in Antakya.
