A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon align, causing Earth's shadow to fall across the lunar surface. During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the Moon enters the darkest portion of Earth's shadow, known as the umbra. About 96% of the Moon was covered by Earth's shadow at the peak of the eclipse, according to NASA.
