MODEL, MOUHAMADOU FALILOU DIALLO SPEAKING TO REPORTER (French)DAKAR, SENEGAL - JUNE 20, 2026: An open-air fashion show was organized in the Sicap Mbao suburb of Dakar, Senegal, on Saturday, June 20, to highlight the discrimination faced by individuals with albinism. The event was arranged by Diarra Diallo, an albino herself and founder of the "Poune Fashion" brand, who has been organising these runway shows since 2024 to address societal issues and promote self-acceptance. Amateur albino models wore pieces from local designers, earning major praise from the crowd. Mouhamadou Faliliou Diallo, a model participating for his third year, noted that these public events create valuable opportunities for social interaction and are steadily shifting public perceptions for the better while breaking long-standing prejudices. The gathering concluded with local dances. People with albinism, a congenital lack of pigment resulting in white skin and hair along with light-colored eyes, face the highest rates of discrimination in Africa. Globally, the condition affects one in 17,000 to 20,000 people, but in Africa, it affects one in 5,000 to 15,000. In many African nations, deep-rooted marginalization labels albinos as signs of luck or misfortune, locking them out of education and employment. Many are abandoned by parents during childhood, forcing them onto the streets. Out of Senegal's population of roughly 18 million, an estimated 10,500 people live with albinism.
