ICA, PERU - JUNE 21, 2026: A team of Peruvian scientists has recently launched a high-altitude research mission from the Ica Desert, sending biological samples to near-space conditions to study how they respond to extreme environments. The mission, led by Octavio Chon-Torres and carried out with the participation of Colombian students, sent a 1.3-kilogram payload 30 kilometers above Earth using a high-altitude balloon during a three-hour flight. The payload included tardigrades, microscopic organisms known for their ability to survive harsh conditions, as well as Colombian coffee seeds and Peruvian maca. Researchers will examine how exposure to intense radiation, freezing temperatures and low atmospheric pressure affects the samples. "People often ask, 'What is the purpose of all this? What benefits can come from it?" a Colombian student, Sofia Ruiz, participating in the experiment said. "What is sometimes overlooked is that research related to space exploration—and the scientific and technological advances developed for space and, in this case, the stratosphere—can also lead to innovations that benefit society as a whole," she explained. "Many of the technologies, materials, and scientific discoveries created to withstand extreme environments can later be adapted for practical applications on Earth, contributing to advancements in industry, science, healthcare, communications, and other fields that improve everyday life." The launch was part of Project Stratosphere, a Peruvian initiative focused on high-altitude research and science education. The project also highlights growing scientific cooperation between Peru and Colombia and could provide data for future astrobiology studies.
