Authorities reported that the volcano spewed an ash column about 2 kilometers into the sky during the eruption. Authorities said the volcano remains at Level II alert status and maintained a 3-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater, warning residents and visitors to stay away from the danger area. Mount Marapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, has continued to produce intermittent ash emissions and remains under close monitoring by volcanology authorities. The 2,891-meter volcano is located on Sumatra island, where access within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater has long been restricted. Indonesia is home to about 130 active volcanoes and sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic and volcanic zones.
