Steinmeier and Büdenbender were accompanied by Indonesian Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar during their tour of Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. The German president and first lady observed several facilities at the mosque and also struck the traditional Indonesian bedug, a large drum historically used to signal prayer times before the call to prayer. After visiting the mosque, the delegation proceeded to Jakarta Cathedral through the Tunnel of Silaturahmi, an underground passage connecting the two houses of worship. The visit highlighted Indonesia’s emphasis on interfaith harmony and religious tolerance, symbolized by the close location of Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral and their connection through the Tunnel of Friendship.
