Homeowner discovers Denmark's biggest-ever Viking silver hoard while digging new patio. A homeowner digging a new patio discovered Denmark's biggest-ever haul of Viking silver. He initially thought his garden fork had struck a piece of old iron. Instead, he began pulling jewellery, coins and silver bars from the ground. The 1,000-year-old treasure weighs 18.5kg and contains around 700 objects and fragments. It includes silver ingots, arm rings, coins, hacksilver and even a tiny Thor's hammer. The treasure was buried inside a clay pot sometime during the 10th century. Coins from England and the Islamic world reveal the huge reach of Viking trade networks.
