Various of goat herds, herdsman Storyline Data from the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food shows that due to the ongoing outbreaks of sheep pox and foot-and-mouth disease, the country has culled over 500,000 cattle and sheep infected with the disease. According to the latest statistics from the ministry, 10 new cases of sheep pox were reported nationwide from May 11 to 24. Since the outbreak began in August 2024, more than 488,000 sheep and goats have been culled across the country. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been reported on the eastern Greek island of Lesbos since March this year, marking the first reported outbreak in the country in 25 years. To date, more than 20,000 cattle and sheep infected with FMD have been culled. Officials from the Ministry of Rural Development and Food said on Tuesday that although the government's measures are working, efforts in epidemic prevention and control cannot be relaxed. Since the outbreak of the epidemic, the Greek government has refused to use vaccines for fear of affecting dairy exports, instead resorting to culling infected animals.
