Strong wind and heavy rain swept through the city during both morning and evening rush hours, disrupting local traffic in different areas to varied extent. According to the meteorological department, pouring rain soaked the central urban area, the central and northern parts of Pudong New Area, and districts of Songjiang and Minhang. In particular, the rainfall in Tangzhen Town in Pudong reached 60 millimeters within six hours, the highest in the city. Several districts including Qingpu, Jiading and Minhang issued yellow alert for thunderstorms. Then blue alert for strong wind and heavy rain were also issued simultaneously. The central urban area and Fengxian District experienced thunderstorms and strong winds of force 6 to 8, with gusts reaching force 7 to 9. The severe convective weather did not cause large-scale flight suspensions at Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports, with only a few flights delayed and a small number canceled. China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow and blue. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
