Rescue teams, relief supplies and some rescue equipment have entered the core rescue area via the road, rescuers said. The deadly mudslide, which was triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier on the Nepalese side of the border with China last Wednesday, has left at least 16 people dead and more than 500 others missing in Gyirong, according to the Xizang regional government. The disaster cut off sections of the G216 national highway, with a total length of about three kilometers destroyed. As the highway is the only road leading to the core affected area, rescuers had to trek in mountains for over 10 hours or take helicopters to reach the port before the road access was restored.
