Former Google CEO predicts AI will replace most programmers in a year

In just one year, your newest co-worker might not be human, but rather an autonomous AI agent

That's not a recent Netflix sci-fi pitch. It's a prediction from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt

We believe as an industry that in the next one year, the vast majority of programmers

will be replaced by AI programmers. At the AI and biotechnology summit in Washington

D.C., the tech mogul told the audience AI is about to hit a major turning point

the ability to plan, a function that takes it closer to what is known as super intelligence

solving is only about six years away, according to Schmidt. And if that doesn't keep you up at

night, even in the short term, the transformation will be huge. Schmidt believes by next year

The real game changer is artificial general intelligence, or AGI, which he describes as

the smartest mathematician, physicist, artist, writer, thinker, or politician. According to Schmidt, achieving AGI would place a brilliant mind at everyone's fingertips, capable of advanced

design, contract negotiation, or policy drafting. That's when AI can do any intellectual task a human

can in one computer. And it begs the question. What happens when every single one of us has the

equivalent of the smartest human on every problem in our pocket? If these AI agents really do become

the best at everything, Schmidt says they'll transform every field from business to government

to academia. And that shift may come with consequences. In the next year or two

this foundation is being locked in and we're not going to stop it
