These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow News. Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli. We begin with breaking news. Two people are dead
0:49
after a passenger jet collided with a fire truck on a runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport
0:55
The crash happened late Sunday night as an Air Canada Express flight, the one you see right there, arrived from Montreal
1:03
Authorities say the plane struck a Port Authority rescue and firefighting vehicle that was responding to a separate incident
1:10
The pilot and co-pilot on the Air Canada plane were killed. Several passengers were injured and two people inside the fire truck were also hurt
1:18
The aircraft, a CRJ900, was carrying more than 70 passengers and four crew members
1:24
Flight tracking data shows the plane had just landed and was slowing down on the runway when it hit the vehicle
1:31
Officials say the jet was traveling at a low speed at the time of the collision
1:36
Emergency crews flooded the runway within minutes. Photos from the scene show heavy damage to the nose of the aircraft with emergency vehicles surrounding the plane
1:45
The Port Authority says it activated emergency response protocols immediately. The FAA issued a ground stop shortly after the crash, shutting down LaGuardia overnight
1:56
The airport is expected to remain closed until at least 2 p.m. today
2:01
Travelers are being told to expect significant delays and cancellations throughout the day
2:06
The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to investigate. The collision comes as airports across the country are already dealing with major disruptions
2:17
This morning, ICE agents would begin deploying two airports to help with long TSA lines as a funding standoff in Washington drags on
2:26
Passengers are already dealing with long waits at security checkpoints with some lines stretching for hours out the doors and down hallways at major airports The problem TSA staffing shortages as workers miss paychecks during the Department of Homeland Security funding fight Now the Trump administration says ICE
2:45
agents will step in to help keep travelers moving. On Fox News Sunday, border czar Tom Holman said
2:51
ICE will assist with airport operations, including managing crowds so TSA officers can stay focused
2:58
on screening. We're going to try to move both lines quicker, give TSA support. They're our
3:03
brothers and sisters on the DHS and we simply need to get these officers paid. But until then
3:08
the president came up with a great idea. Let's send additional resources to the airports
3:12
to support the American people and support the men and women with TSA who are not getting paid
3:17
but shown up for work every day. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says ICE agents are trained
3:23
and can help even if they're not replacing TSA officers. They run those same type of security machines at the southern border, right
3:32
Packages come through or people come through. They run similar assets. And again, even if we look at the line there to manage the through flow of people
3:43
and even administratively, they'll be helpful. But again, we have ICE agents who are trained and can provide assistance to agents
3:51
But there are still questions about how the plan will work, including how many ICE agents will be deployed and where
3:57
Democrats argue the plan puts untrained personnel in sensitive roles and could make a tense situation worse
4:05
There are three things that have been true since Donald Trump and Republicans came back into power last January
4:11
Life is more expensive. Life is more chaotic and life is more extreme
4:15
We've already seen how ICE conducts itself. These are untrained individuals when it comes to doing the current job that they have for the most part, let alone deploying them in close exposure in highly sensitive situations at airports across the country
4:32
The deployment comes after President Trump confirmed the move on Truth Social Sunday, saying ICE agents would be sent to airports starting today
4:40
The White House says it's a temporary solution until Congress resolves the funding stalemate and TSA workers are paid
4:48
Now to the war in Iran. A high-stakes deadline hits today over the Strait of Hormuz, with the United States and Iran trading threats over what comes next
4:59
President Trump has given Iran 48 hours to fully open the Strait or face U.S. strikes on its energy infrastructure
5:07
Iran responded by warning it would shut the waterway completely and target energy sites across the region if the U follows through The Strait of Hormuz handles a major share of the world oil supply so any disruption has global consequences
5:22
On Saturday, Trump posted that the U.S. would, quote, hit and obliterate Iranian power plants if the Strait is not reopened
5:30
The White House is making clear military options are still under consideration
5:35
Well, I would never take anything off the table for the president, certainly not on national television
5:40
And so to the extent we're degrading their military capability and their defense industrial base, all options should be on the table
5:48
And the president's made that very clear. Meanwhile, the head of the International Energy Agency warns the global economy faces a major threat, worse than the oil shocks of the 1970s
5:59
saying no country will be immune if the conflict continues. Financial markets are already reacting, with Asian markets down sharply overnight and losses spreading into Europe
6:09
In Tehran this morning, power is out in parts of the city after a new wave of Israeli strikes
6:16
Saudi Arabia says it intercepted two Iranian missiles headed toward Riyadh. The death toll continues to rise, with thousands killed across Iran and Lebanon since the fighting began more than three weeks ago
6:29
U.S. officials say 13 Americans have died since the conflict started on February 28th
6:35
The agency behind the airport disruptions could soon have new leadership. The Senate voted 54 to 37 on Sunday to advance Republican Senator Mark Wayne Mullen's nomination to lead the Department of Homeland Security
6:49
A final confirmation vote is expected in the coming days, with this evening being the earliest possible timeline
6:56
If confirmed, Mullen would replace Kristi Noem and take over an agency still dealing with funding standoff and staffing issues
7:05
Mullen's path to this point has not been smooth. During last week's confirmation hearing, he faced sharp questions from both parties
7:12
including Republican Senator Rand Paul, who raised concerns about Mullen's past comments and temperament
7:19
Two Democrats voted with Republicans to move Mullen's nomination forward, helping secure enough support to advance
7:25
Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico
7:29
Today's show host Savannah Guthrie and her family are making a new public appeal for help in finding her missing mother in Tucson, Arizona
7:39
Guthrie posted a message on Instagram over the weekend sharing a religious image with the words I believe as the search for her 84 mother Nancy Guthrie continues She also posted a new statement from the Guthrie family thanking the Tucson community for its support and appealing for anybody with information to come forward The statement read
8:01
someone knows something. It's possible a member of this community has information that they do not
8:06
even realize is significant. Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February 1st. Investigators
8:12
believe she was abducted from her home in Tucson. The family is asking neighbors to revisit anything
8:17
they may have seen or recorded in the days surrounding her disappearance
8:22
Authorities say surveillance images have been recovered from cameras at the home
8:26
but so far nothing has been publicly identified as suspicious. Investigators are still yzing evidence, including DNA, as they work to develop new leads
8:36
Police have released videos showing a masked man outside Guthrie's front door the night she disappeared
8:42
Nearly two months later, no suspect or suspects identified. The family has offered a $1 million reward for information that leads to Nancy Guthrie's recovery
8:53
Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI. Finally this morning, your bracket is likely busted, but the games were great
9:02
A wild weekend of March Madness on the basketball court. There was last-second drama all over the country on Sunday
9:09
Late last night, the number one seed in the South and defending champion Florida lost to number nine seed Iowa
9:17
The Hawkeyes' Alvaro Fulgaris hit a three-point shot with 4.5 seconds left to give Iowa a dramatic 73-72 win
9:27
The Hawkeyes will play Nebraska later this week in the Sweet 16
9:31
Yep, neighbors by state, right? Earlier in the marquee game on CBS, Kansas made a furious second-half comeback to tie St. John's with less than 10 seconds to go
9:43
But then the Red Storm's Dylan Darling drove through the paint and made a layup as time expired
9:49
St. John's wins 67-65. They will play number one Duke on Friday
9:54
Other winners over the weekend still alive, UConn, Michigan State, Purdue, Texas, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa State, Illinois, and Houston
10:06
That is your Sweet 16. Wow, it only gets better from here
