Today we are making vegan mozzarella sticks that have the perfect crunch and flavor
0:06
and they even stretch. Welcome back. Before we get started, we are going to need a batch of my vegan mozzarella, which we made
0:15
in the last video. So if you miss that, I will put a link in the description below where you can find that video
0:22
And I'll also put a link to the recipe in the description so you can follow along
0:26
If you don't want to make your own mozzarella, you can use a store-bought mozzarella like
0:29
like miocos. In my test the miocos did not stretch quite as well as the homemade
0:34
mozzarella. When I made this vegan mozzarella I wrapped it up in plastic wrap to
0:39
shape it into a rectangular shape. So this is gonna make it possible to slice it into nice
0:46
even sticks. So that's what I'm gonna do now. I'm just gonna cut this
0:50
mozzarella into about eight pieces. So I just going to set this aside and now I going to make a batter I starting with a quarter cup of flour and I going to add three quarters of a teaspoon of salt half a teaspoon of sugar half a teaspoon of garlic powder half a teaspoon of onion
1:27
powder, a quarter teaspoon of baking powder, and an eighth a teaspoon of white pepper to a bowl
1:33
And I'm just going to give it a little mix. Now I'm going to add three-eighths of a cup of water, which is six tablespoons and mix it up
1:41
until I have a nice smooth batter. Now in a separate bowl, I am going to make my seasoned breadcrumbs
1:53
So I'm just adding three quarters of a cup of Panko breadcrumbs, one teaspoon of dried basil
1:59
a teaspoon of dried oregano, and half a teaspoon of dried thyme
2:04
And I'm going to mix that up so it's nice and even. And lastly, I'm just going to put some flat
2:11
on a small plate here. I'm not going to put too much on the plate just enough to
2:16
coat the slices of mozzarella and I'll add more if I need it. Now over on my stove
2:21
I'm going to preheat my oil. I'm adding about an inch of oil to a large saute pan
2:26
and I'm going to heat it up on medium heat. It's really important for this recipe
2:31
that you don overheat the oil because you won get the same stretch from your mozzarella if you do and you might burn the bread crumbs as well So back to my little mozzarella assembly line here I going to take a slice of the mozzarella and roll it around in the flour
2:46
This is going to make it easier for the batter to stick. Now I'm going to drudge it through the batter and make sure it gets a nice, even coat
2:53
The batter is what's giving the mozzarella sticks their crunch and some of the flavor
2:59
and it's also the barrier that's going to keep the mozzarella from leaking out when it's free
3:03
It's also giving the breadcrumb something to stick to, so make sure you coat it well
3:09
And finally, we are going to coat the mozzarella stick in the seasoned breadcrumbs
3:14
If you have any spots that are hard to get fully coated sometimes, a spoon can help
3:18
If you just spoon the breadcrumbs over the bare spot and then press down with the back of
3:22
the spoon, it'll usually stick. Now I'm just going to set this aside on a plate and coat the rest of the mozzarella sticks
3:30
My mozzarella sticks are now ready to fry. You can also bake these if you prefer
3:36
You just won't get the same golden color and crunch as you do when they're fried
3:41
If you want to bake them, you can put them in an oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes and turn
3:46
them halfway. I am going to carefully add my mozzarella sticks to my hot oil
3:52
They take about two to three minutes to turn golden brown and then I will turn them to the other side Then I going to pull them out with a metal spatula and let them drain on some paper towels for a few minutes And they done Buesco really well with my spicy maranara dipping sauce which the recipe
4:09
is on my website and I will leave a link for that in the description below if you want that
4:14
recipe. Let's stretch test them. It has a really nice crunch to it and the cheese has a very
4:38
mozzarella-y flavor. It doesn't have the exact mouth feel of mozzarella. It is lighter and when it stretches it's not as strong
4:48
It breaks more easily. But compared to all the vegan mozzarella that I've tried, I mean
4:53
this is probably the closest. So as long as you have realistic expectations, go ahead and fill
4:59
the nostalgic void in your soul for mozzarella sticks. This should do it. That's all for this one
5:06
but I am not done with this mozzarella because in the next one I am going to make vegan baked ziti
5:12
