Hey everyone, welcome to the video and today I'm going to talk about a blog post I wrote called
0:04
Content Marketing vs. SEO, What is the Difference? And this is an important topic to cover because a lot of new marketers wonder
0:12
what is SEO, what is content marketing, how are they different and which one should I use for my business to help it grow? And so what I want to do here
0:20
is I want to pull out the highlights from this blog post that are important for you to walk
0:24
away from this video knowing and if there's anything you want to know further
0:28
I encourage you to read the blog post so that you can learn more about these concepts
0:32
I'll leave a link in the description below so you can do that, but let's go ahead and get started so you can understand the difference between content marketing versus SEO
0:42
Now, the first thing I want to talk about is what is SEO
0:46
SEO stands for search engine optimization. And what that means is that you can do different things to your website and through other websites
0:56
to optimize your webpages so that they can rank higher in search engines like Google for specific
1:04
keywords. So for example, I want this article to rank for the keyword content marketing versus SEO
1:11
because that's something people are curious about. And so I'm using different types of
1:18
SEO strategies to do that. I'm using what's called on-page SEO, and eventually I'm going to use
1:24
off-page SEO. And so what is the difference there? On-page SEO refers to things that are on your
1:30
webpage that you can control. And so there's a variety of factors there, and I talk about them
1:34
in many of my other videos, and I explain the most important ones on this blog post. So give it a look
1:40
if you want to see all of them listed out for you. But just the basics here are you have what's called
1:46
a title tag. So every webpage has a title tag or the meta title, and that's the actual name of the
1:53
webpage that shows up in the search results when people look for a certain keyword. So I can put
1:58
keywords in that meta title and that can help me rank higher. I can also put different keywords in
2:03
the different headings on the page. So those are the H1s through H6 that you can use to organize
2:10
your content and you can put keywords there. You can also put keywords within the page content in
2:15
certain places that send stronger signals to Google that you should rank for the content
2:19
You can do things like put images on the page and you can put keywords within the file name and within the alt text and different other things you can do
2:30
Even page speed, making your pages faster, you know, is on page SEO and trying to hit good scores on core web vitals, which is a Google initiative that essentially what they've said is that, you know, the speed of your pages and the way they look on a web browser and on a mobile
2:49
device is going to be a ranking factor. So how does the content look and the speed of that
2:55
Those are on-page SEO things that you can control on your site and a way to send signals to search
3:01
engines like Google that this is what I should be ranked for. So if you look at my blog post
3:05
you're going to see the words content marketing versus SEO, SEO versus content marketing
3:11
content marketing and SEO, terms like that repeated throughout the post because I'm
3:17
trying to say to the search engines, this is what it's about
3:20
Make sure you rank me for this. Now the next thing is called off-page SEO
3:25
And off SEO refers to external sources i websites that are linking back to your website And what that does is it sends signals to search engines that these are signals that are verifying
3:41
that the information on the webpage should be ranked for those keywords. So let's say I go to another website that talks about SEO and I get a link on one of their articles
3:50
that comes back to SEO Chatter and the link says SEO Tips
3:55
Well, that's a third party essentially voting for my site through a link saying
4:00
SEO chatter is about SEO tips. So you should rank him for that type of content
4:06
And so that's using what's called backlinks. And you can do that from a variety of different sites out there
4:13
And so off-page SEO factors are harder to control than on-page. And usually the off-page ones require a relationship to be built with people
4:23
so they're not just something you can just go off and get. Now, that's not to say you can't pay for things like that
4:29
I mean, there's lots of people out there that sell that as a service where they say, hey, you want some links on my site
4:34
Give me some money and I'll put your link on my site. But Google tries to crack down on stuff like that
4:40
So that's usually not something that you want to participate in. It's better to somehow maybe barter or exchange things
4:47
Like, for example, I'm doing these videos. You know, I could go to a site and say, hey, I want you to feature me on your site
4:56
You know, can you link to me? And it might say, okay, I'll do that. But will you interview me in one of your videos
5:02
So that's the way that works. There's other things you can do, which are called brand mentions
5:08
So you're not necessarily getting a link to your site, but you're getting just a mention of your brand
5:12
so somebody could interview me on something to do with SEO and they could put a quote by me in their article
5:20
You see stuff like that done all the time in news. They'll go and find an expert on a topic
5:26
and what they'll do is they'll interview that person and they'll put their name plus the quote
5:31
You can also do social shares, so just getting your content shared on social media
5:35
And there's this thing called domain authority which is also an off-page SEO factor
5:39
which is the more strong your domain becomes for certain things, it can rank easier for keywords
5:47
And there's different factors part of that. So the age of your site, you know, so a new site that's created tomorrow
5:53
will have a lower domain authority than a site that's been around for 20 years, for example
5:58
You know, since it's been around 20 years, it just shows that there's a lot of strength there and it's been well maintained
6:03
especially if the content is good. So they look at the history of the domain
6:07
and then also the number of links pointing to that domain. So over time, a domain may have thousands of links pointing to it
6:16
and that's just making it stronger versus a site that only has maybe five links pointed to it
6:22
So now let's talk about the idea of what is content marketing. Content marketing is focused on creating, publishing, and distributing content for a targeted audience online
6:32
and that can be done through a variety of different ways. So you can create blog posts that refer to content articles on your website
6:41
You can go off and write blog posts on other people's sites. You can create channels on Medium or Tumblr, other different blog sites, and you can put content on there as a way to build brand awareness and drive people back to your site
6:58
Again, you can do social media posts. that can be anything from like you know just a quick tweet or you can write content maybe on Facebook that promotes one of your latest blog posts You can
7:13
have an email newsletter, so that's content marketing. You can write emails
7:19
and send it off to your newsletter subscribers and you can write content
7:22
that appeals to them and maybe pushes them back to your site or tries to sell
7:26
something so you're using content marketing do that you can write ebooks
7:31
that people can download that has information for them to take advantage of
7:35
you can create videos like this one where you're sharing content that's
7:40
valuable for people and that's considered a part of content marketing so
7:44
what I'm talking about here is content marketing or strategies that you're
7:48
using not on your website to make them rank higher for keywords but you're
7:53
using this content that you distribute out into the internet for other people to consume
7:58
And when they do that, that's just starting to build brand awareness for your company
8:04
so that you are basically becoming highly favored in your niche. And so the more you can do that, the more you can use content marketing, the more established
8:12
you can become in your industry, and people will know more about you. And so it can just make a lot of things easier over the long term when you're trying to get
8:20
more sales and leads for your business. So a top question is people wonder, okay, well, is SEO content marketing at all
8:28
And the answer is no. SEO is just optimizing your web page or optimizing those external signals to get your website to rank higher for certain keywords
8:39
That's all it is. It's just optimization. It's not content marketing at all
8:44
However, on the flip side, is content marketing a part of SEO
8:49
Well, the answer there is yes. Content marketing is a part of SEO because content marketing helps you with your search engine optimization
8:57
because that content you're producing can help create more links, which is an off-page SEO factor
9:05
So the more good content you produce, the more it gets shared, the more people reference it on their sites
9:10
you're creating those natural backlinks and natural brand awareness for your site
9:15
So, for example, a lot of the articles I write on SEO chatter, I am linking to other experts in the industry
9:23
And so the reason I'm doing that is because I found something that they wrote valuable
9:29
And now I'm voting for them by saying, hey, I think this should be something I share and show to my audience
9:36
And so that content they created through content marketing is now giving them dividends on that work because it's getting shared and linked to from other sources
9:45
And so the last thing I want to mention is there's this concept people talk about with SEO is they say, content is king in SEO
9:57
And so what does that mean? What that means is essentially content is king in SEO because high-quality content is essential for good rankings in search engines like Google
10:08
In the past, you could basically just throw up a web page that just was rubbish and just put some keywords in certain spots, and you could rank high for those keywords
10:17
Well, those days are long gone. You actually have to have good, valuable content that meets the search intent of the user and actually answers their query in a good way that they find your resource valuable
10:29
And then you also sprinkle in the on-page optimization. And so at that point content is king in the sense that you have to have valuable content that people like that well optimized that they want to share with other people and helps them meet a need
10:42
essentially. And so content really is the king in SEO. And it's also the king with content marketing
10:48
because if you create just a piece of content that's not very good and you put it out on the
10:53
internet through social media, or you try to pitch it to other people, you know, or you put it on
10:58
you know, medium is like a blog post, et cetera, where you make an infographic that's just kind of
11:02
weak, you know, where you put together like a five second video that doesn't have any good
11:06
information in it. If you're creating low quality content, you know, that stuff's not going to get
11:11
liked. It's not going to get shared. People aren't going to want to look at it, share it, you know
11:15
give it natural virility for it. So essentially content is king. It's content is king in SEO
11:25
It's king in content marketing, et cetera. And so along with that is if you ever find that you're struggling with your SEO
11:33
or you're not getting your pages ranked as well for your keywords, it may be because the content is just not as strong as your competitors
11:42
And on my blog, I talk about another idea where people ask
11:46
why does SEO take so long to work? And I link to it in this blog post
11:51
And essentially, at the end of the day, it's because your content just may not be as good
11:55
or it just may take some time to rank higher. There's a lot of variable factors
11:59
So take a look at that blog post if that interests you. But I just want you to understand that with all of this
12:08
SEO and content marketing are both good strategies that you should use in your business
12:13
SEO is one of the first things that you should focus on
12:17
because if you do SEO right, you can essentially optimize your website
12:22
and your webpages to rank for certain keywords that can last for a long time
12:27
You know, that stuff doesn't just change overnight. You know, you can optimize a webpage, for example
12:33
I've done some a year or two years ago. I did it well, and that page is still ranking
12:37
on the first page of Google, and I'm continuing to get a return on that investment
12:41
over and over and over. And the same thing with content marketing
12:45
You invest good time and energy into that. For example, this video, I'm creating it today
12:51
but it's going to last forever on YouTube. And people are going to find it
12:55
They're going to share it. It's going to go, go, go and just be infinite. So I just want to make sure that you try to focus on both SEO and content marketing
13:04
Content marketing, I think, is more the long-term game plan once you get your SEO established and done well
13:10
because then you can start promoting that content through content marketing and getting more eyes on your website
13:17
So I hope all that makes sense. If there's any questions about it from the things I mentioned in the video

13:38
