Ruth Ann, 71, a widow in Chillicothe, Ohio, opens her door at twenty to midnight and finds her son and his wife on the porch with two hard-sided suitcases already set down. Ten minutes later her daughter-in-law has claimed the front bedroom and handed her a typed list of rules for her own home. Ruth swallows it and smiles. Then she notices the page is warm from that girl's hand and printed on both sides, and the back of it is page three of a state form with her own legal name in capital letters, a case number, a line that reads Caregiver of Record, and her own signature at the bottom, dated fourteen months ago.
