If you won't go to a nursing home, pack a bag and leave my house

"If you won't go to a nursing home, pack a bag and leave my house — now!" my son yelled at me in his own living room, in front of his wife and two of their friends, on a Sunday afternoon in March. I was sixty-four years old, I had four hundred and eighty thousand dollars of my money inside that family, and I did not own one square foot of anything. I didn't cry and I didn't beg. I thanked him, I packed a suitcase, and I made one phone call I had been saving for thirteen years. One hour later a long black car stopped at his curb, and when he opened the front door expecting a delivery and saw who got out of the back seat, the smile came off his face.
