Raymond Callahan, 74, lives in a brick ranch house on Mill Creek Road in Rowan County, Virginia, drives a 1998 pickup and lets the whole town believe he was in the Army a long while back. He was. He retired with four stars on each shoulder and never told his son-in-law's family a word about it. After two years of being treated like a burden, he gets invited to Christmas dinner at their big house, so he wears the torn brown work coat he splits firewood in, on purpose, to find out exactly what a family like that does to a man they believe has nothing. He gets his answer in the doorway, at the table, and in the laugh that goes around the room. Then his son-in-law's father slides a white envelope across the tablecloth with two fingers, and inside it is a legal document with Raymond's own daughter's signature already dried at the bottom.
