Hey guys, prepared to wander out in the woods today
0:11
I wanted to show you the Mountain Smith Tour. This is the newest one in their lineup
0:18
The Mountain Smith Tour has been around for a very long time. This is not a new bag, but this design, these upgrades that they've made to this bag have
0:29
significantly changed it and I think made it a little bit of a better EDC hiking bag
0:36
I want to show you mine and what I'm doing with it and see what you guys think
0:40
Stay tuned. How I have this thing set up is kind of a grab and go EDC, but also for hikes
0:52
My wife and I have started hiking metro parks in our area
0:56
She carries an older Mountain Smith Tour and she really likes that bag
1:01
I decided I probably should get one too so I can carry water and essentials with me
1:07
but I wanted it to do several different things. I don't want it to be just for hiking
1:11
I want to be able to throw this thing in my truck, carry some necessities with me when
1:16
I'm traveling, possibly using it with camera gear. I really wanted multiple roles for it
1:25
I think it's a good bag for that just because of its versatility and what it can carry
1:30
Right off the top, two dual water bottle holders on each side
1:35
These are big enough to hold a 32 ounce standard Nalgene bottle, which I think is a big plus
1:40
for a lot of people. It certainly is for me. If you want to carry a lot of water, this is the way to do it
1:46
So able to carry a full size water bottle and you can carry, if I can get it out of
1:54
here, a nesting cup as well. This cup is the Ollicamp nesting cup
2:07
It is 20 ounces, so it's pretty standard. Many of the nesting cups will fit in here like the Walmart or the GSI
2:19
Canteen cups will not fit in these side pouches. A canteen will, but a canteen cup will not
2:25
So just note that as we're walking through this review. On the front of it, it comes with this shock cord built in, which is a really nice feature
2:38
because then if you want to throw in a jacket or something like that, you can do that pretty easily
2:42
I've got a couple of Grimlocks on here, so I can attach extra gear to it
2:47
Of course I've got my hand sanitizer on the outside. It has a zipper pocket on the front that has a key leash built in
2:56
I've just got a compass and a whistle in here. I've got my bandana, my Olight headlamp, some energy bars, not much
3:19
I've got dual grab handles, which are really well stitched. They're actually backed up with another piece of nylon, so these things aren't going to
3:28
pull out on you or fray or whatever. You're going to have to forgive the noise a little bit
3:37
I'm at a public hiking trail. So you open up the main compartment and it has this padded neoprene sleeve in the back
3:45
which they say is designed for like a tablet. You know, if you're going to use this for office carry or urban carry, you certainly
3:53
can do that. It's also nice for carrying items that are a little flatter
4:00
So I've got a titanium stove. I've got this space sleeping bag, emergency bivvy
4:11
There's also a sewn in zipper pocket for organization. In here I've got some coffee and tea and sugar
4:19
I've got my titanium spork. So it's a nice little pocket for organizing all that small stuff
4:25
And then the main compartment is pretty generous. I've got some survival items in there, some gloves, first aid kit, and there's still plenty
4:35
of room. This thing will expand much wider than what it looks like right here
4:41
This is hanging, so it's a little tighter. Really nice mesh on the back with air channels sewn into it so you can get some air flow
5:00
The hip belt is not overly padded, so it conforms more to your shape and doesn't become real bulky
5:07
That way also you can, if you want to, you can fold this up and stick it behind that pad
5:14
Now in this pocket, there is a slip pocket back here. I've got my SE3, which conceals very nicely back there
5:24
It's a great spot for it. There's also a port for headphones
5:29
I think you could probably get away with doing a small hydration bladder and running a hose
5:37
through there. On this side of the belt, there is a zippered pocket
5:46
I've got some lip balm, I've got my bird call, good place to put keys
5:58
Now for whatever reason, they didn't put anything on this side of the belt, and I don't know why
6:05
It seems a little strange to me. If you're going to put a hip belt here, why not put a pocket here
6:17
Why wouldn't you put a pocket on this side as well? On their older models, they did have pockets on each side, but they took it away on this side
6:24
What they didn't do, they could have put also a MOLLE or at least one strap here so you
6:30
could at least attach your own pocket. If you want, there are these straps that attach from the front of the pack and go all
6:42
the way back to the belt. That cinches up the load of the pack
6:46
It brings the pack against your body more. You can either have that over the water bottle, or you can have it behind the water bottle
6:55
I kind of like it behind the water bottle, that way it doesn't stick out too far
6:59
If you're wearing this on your hip, and you pull this strap in, it just tightens everything
7:07
up to your body, which is a great feature. It keeps the bag from flopping around on your back, and that's important with lumbar packs
7:15
You can also remove this shoulder strap, and you can attach the optional strapettes, which
7:26
are an X-strap shoulder harness, which allows you to carry more weight
7:32
If you're going to carry a lot of weight with this pack, I suggest getting some kind of
7:36
harness system to help stabilize it. That puts the load on your shoulders more and off of your waist and helps stabilize it
7:45
You don't have to use the Mountain Smith strapettes. I've read a review where one guy took Hill People gear shoulder straps off of their packs
7:56
and was able to attach it via these buckles, so that's an option
8:01
You can also set this up with Alice Y-straps from your Alice gear
8:09
So you old army dogs who still have some Alice gear floating around in your basement, that
8:15
is an option, very easy to do. They would just clip into these straps right here, or you can even thread a D-ring on that
8:23
clip those on, and then the other strap clips down here on this metal bracket or buckle
8:34
From what I've read, this is a 600D Denier Cordura. It has a very soft, slick feel to it, and I like it
8:46
It looks great, it feels good, I think it's going to do a nice job of repelling water
8:51
and being abrasion resistant, and of course the camo pattern I think is pretty cool
8:55
You can also get this bag in a Hunter OD Green and then a Coyote Tan for the subdued colors
9:03
and then they have some brighter colors like red, and there's a blue, and I think a black
9:08
as well. So, there's some different options. There's a bag that I can tuck away the waist belt and carry it shoulder style into a building
9:24
or I can undo that, take that belt out and carry it hiking
9:29
It just gives me some different options for a pack, and I want to definitely use it for
9:35
traveling, storing camera gear in it, doing some hiking with it, and possibly some hunting
9:43
this fall. Also, on the bottom of the pack, there are straps for securing extra gear, so if you
9:54
got a roll, like a towel, or a beach blanket, or maybe rain gear, or a poncho, maybe even
10:03
a light tarp, you could roll that up and stick that under here and carry it that way
10:10
So lots of options. It's kind of a do-all bag. It's got a lot of different features to it
10:20
It's going to fill a lot of different needs for me. I'm really looking forward to using it more this year
10:25
