sometimes you forget about the treasures
0:02
you have on your own doorstep and living
0:05
in London it's so easy to do that this
0:08
so much should do so much see and the
0:10
most amazing treasures all over the
0:13
British Museum is one such treasure hi
0:16
I'm Gary Bembridge from tips for
0:18
travellers that grow bull travel
0:20
destination podcast it's been up to at
0:24
least 15 years since I last went to the
0:27
British Museum in London seeing it as
0:30
the place that a tourist may visit and
0:31
there was no need to swing by again how
0:35
wrong I was we decided to have a
0:38
cultural day out one Sunday and the
0:40
British Museum came up as an option and
0:43
what a great outing it ended up being
0:46
the British Museum was founded right
0:48
back in 1753 and is located in the
0:52
centre of London not far from the
0:54
bustling Oxford Street and with an easy
0:57
walking distance of Tottenham Court tube
1:00
Nicolle museums in the UK entry is free
1:03
although they do encourage a donation of
1:05
five pounds file donation boxes dotted
1:08
around each entrance and throughout the
1:11
museum now the museum is housed in a
1:14
large and very impressive looking
1:16
building with long columns but it's
1:19
inside it there is a real wow factor the
1:23
buildings are dramatic imposing and a
1:26
startling mix of old and new effects
1:29
there's a huge glass roof covering what
1:32
must have been an open courtyard the
1:35
museum buildings originally faced into
1:37
there's a modern central structure and
1:40
then as one explores you keep coming
1:42
into massive and equally bold and/or
1:45
inspiring halls and rooms the use of
1:48
glass roofs and skylights makes the
1:50
whole place bright and modern one thing
1:54
that I found really interesting and
1:57
really impressive
1:58
other than the remarkable artifacts and
2:00
displays was the mix of people the
2:03
museum was jam-packed full the Sunday we
2:07
went it is really quite incredible how
2:09
many people the museum attracts and it's
2:12
a credit to the
2:13
the people behind the museum who have
2:15
made it such an event in both structure
2:17
and exhibits that they can pull so many
2:20
people in the other thing that struck me
2:22
was how many young people were actually
2:25
there which is also impressive that
2:27
they've managed to be so interesting and
2:29
relevant to young people in fact the
2:32
video tour that I made and is posted on
2:34
YouTube and on the blog people
2:36
spontaneously comment about how many
2:38
young people are in the museum there are
2:42
three major tractions that are the real
2:44
draw for most people and on the real
2:47
musculus for most people and the video
2:49
tour I did covers this the Egyptian area
2:53
which includes the famous rosetta stone
2:55
and the various busts and statues from
2:58
ancient Egypt in the area this is on the
3:00
ground floor and the first stop for most
3:03
people this is a bright and very
3:05
impressive area the Elgin marbles which
3:10
are the hotly disputed freezes taken
3:12
from the Parthenon in Athens that the
3:14
Greeks are hungry to have returned to
3:15
their origin this is also on the first
3:18
floor the huge chamber these are housed
3:21
in dates from the 1930s and is very
3:24
stunning and very impressive the third
3:28
is the mummy section higher up in the
3:30
museum with our caskets and mummies and
3:32
this area is very popular and gets very
3:35
packed there are also audio tours that
3:38
one can hire to guide you through the
3:40
museum and there are various immersion
3:42
and eye-opening talks held in the
3:44
different halls at different times
3:45
during the day what's on the website
3:47
they suggest various routes based on how
3:50
much time you have and it's great
3:51
because they have one hour two hours
3:53
three hours cetera options now dotted
3:56
around the museum are a couple of eating
3:59
places with the most popular the ones in
4:02
this very large very bright open
4:04
courtyard when you enter there are a
4:07
number of different shops on the ground
4:08
floor some are selling just postcards so
4:12
four and then a series of very
4:14
inexpensive sort of memorabilia and then
4:17
there's one that sells for example full
4:20
sized resin statues for 10,000 pounds
4:23
another very pricey replicas and gift
4:26
I can as you can tell and was very
4:30
impressed by the British Museum and had
4:32
a really really good time it's an
4:37
amazing day out it's very busy and as a
4:39
great feel and there's so much to do and
4:42
so much to see in fact I took zillions
4:46
of photographs that I've posted on
4:48
Flickr and you could visit my blog at
