Hey Wanderers, Prepared Wanderer down in the Man Cave today, and we're going to be going
0:09
over a load out that I'm going to be taking on a trip here in the next week or so, so
0:14
stick around. So next weekend, or this coming weekend, I'm going to be going on a trip to Western Pennsylvania
0:20
meeting up with some buddies to do a camping trip. This is a trip that I've done many, many, many times, a lot of different weather
0:29
We don't hike a lot as far as hiking into our campsite
0:33
This is in Allegheny National Forest, so it's nice because it's wild camping, but what you
0:37
can do is you can pick a spot, pull over, and then hike into the woods and find your spot
0:44
So what we usually do is, we have several campsites that we've been going to over the
0:49
years that we have staked out. We have a guy who lives in that area, he'll kind of scout them out for us, and when we're
0:58
there we also scout out new sites too. But it makes it nice because it's convenient, you don't have to hike miles and miles to
1:08
get to a campsite, which, you know, for a weekend for me is a Saturday and a Sunday
1:14
going to Pennsylvania because I don't have work off on Friday. So it's a quick trip for me, and it's nice not to waste a lot of time just hiking
1:24
You know, those are other trips I want to do this year where I'm going to do more long range stuff, so this trip is going to be more about relaxing, meeting up with friends, testing
1:33
out new gear, and just being out in the woods and being around a campfire for a weekend
1:36
So what I've done is, I've actually switched my packs. If you've watched past videos for my winter camping and backpacking trips, I usually take
1:49
the Marine Corps ILBE. I recently upgraded to the Mystery Ranch Glacier
1:55
This is a new pack for me, haven't tried it yet, I've just got it loaded up and been
1:59
kind of carrying it around the house trying to figure out how it fits and how it feels
2:03
and how I can load it properly, and so far it's been outstanding
2:08
One reason I'm upgrading from the ILBE is because the ILBE is such a heavy pack compared
2:15
to something like this. This is a little bit lighter weight. So the suspension system on the Mystery Ranch is just so far beyond the ILBE
2:26
I'll still keep the ILBE and use that maybe for bigger winter trips where I have to carry
2:31
a lot of extra stuff because it's such a bigger pack. But this one comes in at, let's see here, 70 liters, so it's 4,272 cubic inches, which
2:46
is a pretty decent sized pack. Right now the weather is changing, it's cool in the evenings, it's a little bit warmer
2:53
during the afternoons, bugs aren't out yet, so it's really a perfect time to test out
3:00
gear and to get outside and start camping again because it's just been a crazy long
3:05
winter for me and I have not been out camping as much as I would like to
3:11
This is a chance for me to get out and start testing out my gear and trying new things
3:16
So what we're going to do today is we're going to go through the pack, I'm going to show you some of the features of the pack itself, and then I'm going to show you specifically
3:24
what gear I'm taking for this weekend trip. That way you can get an idea of what I bring with me and then you can use that maybe to
3:32
help somebody who's getting into this. Like I said, this is not a long-range backpacking trip, so my gear tends to be a little bit
3:40
heavier than a backpacker, but it's still, I have to be able to carry it, I have to keep
3:46
everything in one bag, I can't make a lot of trips back and forth to my vehicle, I need
3:52
to keep it relatively simple. So this is what I carry and your mileage may vary, so whatever
4:01
But let's take a look in the inside and see what I got
4:05
One thing that sets this pack apart and Mystery Ranch packs from other packs I think is the
4:12
harness system. It is an incredible harness system the way it's designed, it's very comfortable
4:20
I've been really impressed with it so far and it's very simple and that's what's nice
4:25
about it. I believe they call this the Futura harness system. You have your adjustable panel right here, which has your stiffener in it, and this goes
4:35
up and down to fit your torso length. But you can tell just how this thing is ergonomically cut that it's just going to be very comfortable
4:45
and how they cut these shoulder straps with a nice S pattern to them
4:51
You know, they fit your shoulders perfectly, they don't dig in, they're not overly padded
4:55
and they're not underly padded either. So really a nice system overall
5:02
Around the front, the Glacier is an interesting pack because it has a split top pocket
5:09
So the top pocket actually is a pocket here and there's a pocket in the back and it's
5:13
split down the middle. And you can actually remove this and I believe turn this into a waist pack or a day pack
5:23
There's the belt for it right there. I don't know how much I'll do that with it, but it's nice to have that option
5:33
Now when I keep up in the top pockets, I've got my work gloves that I'm going to use around
5:40
the campfire, moving wood, things like that. I've got my toiletry kit, something I can access quickly
5:48
I've got my solar powered luminade lantern. Back pocket, I've got wool gloves for the evening, gets a little chilly
6:04
Come to take the chill off my hands during the morning time
6:09
Extra bandana, I'll probably have a bandana on me as well. And then a fleece beanie to sleep in at night, wear in the evening when it gets a little
6:18
bit cooler. Something that covers the ears. Something that's very comfortable that I can wear while I'm sleeping, keep my head warm
6:28
On the glacier, it has a split front pocket right here, these long pockets, kind of a
6:34
torpedo pocket. These are nice for longer items, things you want to get to quickly
6:40
I've got my flask, which I'll probably have filled up with some Jack Daniels
6:44
Gotta keep warm at night, right? Toilet paper, that's all I've got in this pocket
6:58
This is my pillow. This is the Sea to Summit Eros pillow, premium large
7:07
I think I've talked about this in some other videos when I've actually gone out camping
7:12
This thing is phenomenal. It's something that you inflate, but it packs so small and it's very, very comfortable
7:19
It's really worth the money. It's not the cheapest thing in the world, that's for sure, but it's worth it
7:28
And then in this bag, this is my kitchen bag. This is kind of like kitchen gadgets and little condiments, things that I need
7:37
So I've got my heavy cover spork, which is great for eating out of long, you know, the
7:45
dehydrated meal packets because it's a longer fork. Salt and pepper. Red-eyed hog, original seasoning
7:58
This is great on meat or even in soups and things. It's just good to have some extra seasoning along
8:03
Some red-eyed hog beef fat in case I've got to grease up a pan
8:07
It's also good to actually put on your knives, keep them oiled up
8:13
Really interesting stuff. And then I keep this little package of condiments
8:20
There's flavoring packets in here. There's hot sauce. Just a variety of things I can add to my food while I'm cooking
8:35
I like the size of pocket of this pouch because this really fits all that kind of stuff really nicely
8:40
It fits perfectly in a torpedo pocket up front. Okay
8:54
Moving to the inside. Right on top, I've got my food bag
9:02
Keep this in a waterproof Gecko Brand dry sack. And what I've got in here, if you saw the video, cheap camping food
9:16
A lot of this stuff is the same things I showed in that video
9:20
First thing I've got is a brand new bag of Bushcraft Blend Dark Roast Coffee
9:26
Just got this. Won this on Instagram from Scablands Bushcraft Company. If you go on Instagram, look up Scablands Bushcraft, his coffee company will come up
9:36
He's selling this coffee and it's... Oh my God. Smells so amazing
9:43
I can't wait to cook this up and brew a pot of this in the woods
9:47
It's made with notes of wood smoke and cedar. And I can smell that
9:53
Really nice organic coffee. Can't wait to try this. It's going to be delicious
10:03
Got a package of Instant Grits that a buddy of mine sent me
10:07
I'm going to try that for the first time. I've never had Instant Grits before, so that will be interesting for breakfast
10:16
Always take along some snacks, high energy snacks. Some Cliff Bars, crunchy peanut butter
10:25
These are awesome. Make for a quick meal. A couple of individual Spam packets that I can add to soups or I can fry up in the morning and just have a piece of Spam
10:38
A lot less messy than bacon or anything else. Kind of high in sodium, but if you're sweating it off working out and hiking and stuff, to me it's not that big of a deal
10:49
I just drink a lot more water, but it's good stuff. Some white tuna and water from Bumble Bee
11:00
That will add to what I'm making. Then I've got some dehydrated meals
11:06
This is from Coleman. These are pretty old. I've had these for a while. I bought these on sale at Walmart a long time ago, but they're still good
11:13
I've got San Juan Stroganoff, and then I've got some Max Patch Mac and Cheese
11:26
A little Top Ramen. There's some shrimp flavor. I can add that tuna to that. That will make a nice lunch
11:32
So that's it for food. I don't bring a lot. Usually I bring a steak or something, but I don't think I'm going to
11:37
I'm just going to stick to the dehydrated meals and keep it simple this time since I'm only going to be there a couple days
11:42
The first thing that I need for setup of my camp is my floor
11:46
I'm going to be sleeping in a tarp shelter. This is one of those emergency space blankets that you can get at Walmart
11:55
There are also military issue ones that you can get. I use this as my floor. It's very durable. It works really well
12:03
What I do is when I set up my tarp shelter, I'll actually use the reflective side of this blanket and put that up
12:10
What that does is that helps reflect light inside the shelter. It makes the shelter a little bit brighter, and it makes it easy to see everything that you put on the floor so I don't lose anything
12:22
Since I'm not in a tent, I want to make sure I'm not going to have something roll off my ground cloth and get lost in the grass or something
12:32
This is essential. This is the floor of my shelter. Next thing is in this Hidden Woods Impossible pouch
12:40
This is my stakes and my ridge line. There's a carabiner and some webbing that I hang my pack up with
12:51
All the little essentials that I need to set up my shelter with
12:56
Then we've got my tarp. Now this is the Slumberjack Satellite Tarp
13:02
I've done a video on this. I've shown this on other camping trips I've taken
13:07
I usually use this in conjunction with a hammock, but for this weekend I'm actually going to be sleeping on the ground and just setting up an A-frame shelter low to the ground, and this will be my shelter
13:17
The satellite tarp is 10' x 8 1⁄2", so it's plenty of room to keep me dry
13:32
And what I've done is I've pre-tied my guy lines onto the ends of the corners of this to set up for an A-frame
13:40
So all I have to do is throw this over my ridge line and I'm ready to go
13:48
Next is my pot. Now this is a new piece of gear. I haven't tried this yet
13:55
This is the Morse Pot. 1.1 liter
14:06
What's nice about this is this has the bail handle attached to it, so I can hang this over a fire
14:14
It's got a nice tight fitting lid, so I can drain anything that I'm cooking
14:19
It would be great for making my coffee in. It's just going to be an all-around nice little pot
14:25
I think it's just the right size. At 1.1 liter, I don't think I need much more since I'm boiling water for dehydrated meals
14:32
And I don't think it's going to be too small. I think it's going to be just the right size
14:38
To me it's perfect, and I can't wait to try it out. And inside I keep a rag and a coffee cup
14:48
So that's ready to go. I just got this stored in a stuff sack that I found at a garage sale
14:57
It happened to fit it perfectly. Here is my sleeping pad. This is the Climate Insulated Static V Recon Four Season Lightweight Sleeping Pad
15:12
It weighs 25 ounces. It has an R value of 4.4. So, perfect sweet spot for a sleeping pad to go four season for me
15:24
This will work in winter or summer for me. I really like this. Very comfortable, very easy to set up
15:31
And of course I've got my Helikon-Tex Swagman Roll. This is the poncho liner
15:40
So this is going to be an extra insulation layer for me to wear around camp, but also to throw over me as I'm sleeping if I need to
15:47
I do have a sleeping bag in the bottom of this pack, but this is additional insulation for me
15:52
I think it's good to have extra layers that you can rely upon
15:58
And this is something I can wear. So check out my video on that
16:03
I do a complete review of how this thing works. Awesome piece of gear
16:08
And that's pretty much it. At the bottom of the pack is my sleeping bag. The sleeping bag I'm taking is rated for 30 degrees
16:18
which I think will be just about right for this trip, along with the Swagman Roll that gives me extra insulation
16:25
That should be fine. Now, I'm going to go ahead and put this on
16:29
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:33
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:35
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:37
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:39
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:41
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:43
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:45
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:47
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:49
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:51
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:53
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:55
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:57
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
16:59
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:01
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:03
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:05
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:07
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:09
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:11
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:13
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:15
I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on. I'm going to put this on and then I'm going to put this on
17:17
I like to bring along a haversack with me no matter what I'm doing because during the
17:30
day the backpack is going to be stored underneath my tarp and as I'm walking around camp if
17:36
we go on a hike, which we normally do, I'll have something I can carry, a water bottle
17:41
in and then carry all those essentials. So this is my Hidden Woodsman Haversack
17:45
This is the new style, single buckle. I got this from George Bushcraft
17:54
They were selling these. And inside of it I've got a few things I'm going to take with me
18:01
I've got Bushcraft Outfitters. This is their signal panel but it's also a pouch so you can collect debris or collect
18:12
sticks or tinder or whatever you want to do with that. It's kind of a nice little piece of gear
18:18
I've got my knife sharpener to sharpen my knife at at night while I'm sitting around
18:21
the campfire. It gives me something to do. I maintain my tools
18:25
I've got my neck knife in here. This is the Fortis blade that I just got
18:32
I saw that on my last video. Keep that in there until I get to camp
18:39
I've got a small saw for crafts. This is the Open L. So something to take along with me on a hike
18:48
And then a first aid kit just in case. That's about it in here
18:56
I'll add a water bottle to it like I said. Now this can, there's a couple ways I can take this into the field with me
19:04
I can either put this underneath the top lid of my pack, cinch my pack lid down on top
19:08
of it like that and carry that in or I can carry it over my shoulder
19:13
But I've got an option. Oh and then one thing, there's a couple tools I forgot
19:19
That's my dogs upstairs. That would be Luna. She's barking about something
19:25
Something's got her in a rile. Anyway, silky gomboy, I'm going to take that along for a saw and I'll probably pack some
19:34
type of axe or hatchet. I haven't decided which one I'm going to bring yet
19:39
There's usually enough axes in camp that I don't need to bring a full sized axe that
19:44
sometimes just having a hatchet is nice to have along. But for the most part I've got everything I need
19:50
Alright that's it for today. Hopefully that gives you a good idea of what I'm bringing on my trip
19:55
This is a very typical loadout for me. The only thing that changes is the sleeping bag
19:59
I mean I might go for a heavier bag in the winter time of course
20:04
Maybe a little bit more warmer. And of course more layers, things like that
20:09
But for this transitioning time of spring to summer, this is going to be a lot of what
20:14
I bring. And it works out well for me. I don't have any issues with it
20:21
Now I wanted to do a real quick channel update. We just hit 18,000 subscribers which is amazing
20:32
Can't believe that. I'm very blessed that everybody is subscribing to the channel like they are, watching my videos
20:39
It really makes me feel great. And I really appreciate it. So definitely keep the comments coming
20:45
Please watch, like, subscribe, share, all that good stuff. Get the word out
20:51
Get the channels up and share it with other people. Let them know what I'm doing because I really need your support to keep this thing going
20:59
And you've been a great audience and I really appreciate it. That's it for now
21:04
We'll see you later. Thanks a lot
