Hey, wanderers
0:25
I'm Prepared Wanderer in the Man Cave and I've got a very interesting video for you today
0:31
We're going to be talking about food. Who doesn't love food, right
0:37
But particularly, I want to talk about emergency preparedness, prepping food, storing food
0:47
but also using it for camping too because I think it kind of crosses over several different
0:53
areas of preparedness and having stocks of stuff that you can access quickly and can
1:01
cook easily to give you nutrients and calories in times of emergency or just for going out camping
1:09
This is stuff that I've been putting together that I store. I'm going to show you everything that's on this table, talk about it, and give you some
1:19
ideas and maybe some things that you can pick up at your grocery store or your local
1:24
big box. So stick around. It's going to be a great video
1:28
It should be pretty fun. What I've been doing for years is keeping a couple of containers filled with food that
1:40
is packaged food that I can cook easily. I can prepare on a small stove that takes very minimal ingredients, usually just water
1:53
These are items that I rotate through throughout the year. What I mean by that is I will utilize items that are getting ready to expire quickly
2:04
I'll use those first and then I'll replenish those with trips to the grocery store and
2:10
add more items later. It's a rotating stock. That's really important, of course, when you're doing this kind of preparation
2:18
You don't want to just dump it in a container and then forget about it because things do expire
2:25
Some items don't expire as easily as others, but when we're dealing with things such as
2:29
meat, they do have expiration dates. You do need to pay attention to those and they will make you sick because I've experienced
2:38
it and it's not fun. We're going to start down on this end of the table with some of the staple items that I
2:46
stock up on. First thing that's super important to me is coffee
2:57
This is a product that I found actually by recommendation from Dave Canterbury on his
3:04
channel of this Copico Brown Coffee. What it is is it's an instant coffee that has cream and sugar in it already
3:15
It's very good. It's not the strongest coffee in the world. Sometimes I have to doctor it up a little bit, but it's easy to make
3:25
It doesn't require me storing creamer or having a lot of extra sugar
3:32
I have a big bag of these. I got these off of Amazon. Another item that is super easy to get in the stores is some peanut butter
3:45
Keeping a big container in your preps is good, but for travel, I like these little to-go
3:51
cups from Jif. They keep a very long time. Of course, peanut butter has a very long shelf life and peanut butter is great because it's
4:00
packed with protein, which is such an important thing to have when considering stocking up
4:07
on food that's having protein. You can put this on bread, crackers, tortillas, bagels, or eat it just right out of the cup
4:15
I always have a bunch of these. Another item that I suggest getting is some type of sweetener
4:23
This is Stevia. This is the organic Stevia in the raw. It keeps a very long time
4:30
I keep this because you never know when you need to sweeten other stuff
4:34
I also have regular coffee that I'll show you here in a minute
4:38
It's just good to have a package of some sweetener, so I keep that in my box
4:45
Then, kind of an interesting item, I just got these for my birthday
4:51
Someone gave these to me. These are the flavored syrups that you add to coffee
4:56
I guess you can get these in the little bottles now. I didn't know that
5:02
Another great option for flavoring drinks and coffee. I've got a couple of those stored up
5:11
Then we get into a couple of items that I just absolutely love
5:19
Some people love them. Some people hate them. Before I get into this stuff, I will say that all this stuff is pre-packaged
5:29
It tends to be high in sodium. It tends to be high in calories sometimes
5:34
It's not the best stuff, but I'm not eating this every day. This is emergency rations or it's only because I'm going to go out camping one or two nights
5:44
and I'm going to take a few of these things out of here to use to get out of my rotation
5:51
It's not stuff I'm eating every day. Calories are calories. It doesn't matter
5:56
You need them. Salt is not necessarily a bad thing if you're drinking a lot of water. Ramen is a great item because it stores a very long time
5:59
There are lots of different flavors. That's one of my favorites. You can add stuff to it. What I like to add to ramen are things like this
6:03
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:07
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:11
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:15
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:19
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:23
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:27
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:31
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:35
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:39
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:43
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:47
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:51
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:55
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
6:59
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
7:03
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
7:07
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen
7:11
I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to add this to my ramen. I like to stock up on our condiments, and particularly hot sauces
7:19
So I will collect and save different types of hot sauces and condiments from fast food
7:26
or if I see them at stores or convenience stores, I'll pick up some if there's things that I like
7:31
They're convenient, they're easy, they pack really well. Keep them all separated in a big Ziploc bag so they don't leak on my stuff
7:42
So it's always great to have condiments to spice up your ramen or other things that you're making
7:50
Another item that I just love to add when I'm out are these Honey Stinger Waffles
7:58
These are fabulous for a pick-me-up. They taste great. They have a good energy level to them
8:05
Just they're a fantastic item, and they pack really well. Of course, some forms of canned meat are good too
8:12
There's some Vienna sausages in hot and spicy sauce. Sardines are a fantastic item to add to your preps
8:23
They keep a long time. Lots of protein. And then if you're lucky enough to live in an area that has an Asian market
8:34
I really suggest you go there and familiarize yourself with their products
8:38
They have some unusual stuff that's really good. This is mackerel in a can
8:45
I also pick up more unusual flavors of ramen at the Asian grocery stores in my area
8:53
Now, of course, if you live in a big city, these tend to be common
8:57
but in the smaller towns, rural communities, you're not going to have these
9:01
But this just adds some variety to what I'm eating. And, of course, you can get these, I think, at Kroger
9:12
This is the shin ramen black, which is the super spicy, really good stuff
9:17
So a variety of different soups. And then another item for cooking is some chicken broth
9:26
You can get bouillon cubes, but these are actually flavor packets, and these are liquid
9:32
There's a liquid. I think they're liquid. Yeah, it's a broth concentrate
9:39
So there's little pouches in there, and I can add that to soup. I can add that to meat or game if I'm hunting, and that will help make a stew or soup
9:49
So having some bouillon or broth is a great item to throw in your preps
10:00
An item that runners are used to seeing are these shots, these Cliff Shots
10:07
There's a bunch of different brands of these, but these are a high-energy shot that's kind of a gel that you put in your mouth
10:15
They have caffeine. They have just a variety of different sugars and things in it to get you going
10:22
So a nice convenient item to have, throw in your pack. Another item that I like to have is some type of meat bar
10:35
I've recently been trying these Wag Bars. These are actually a Wagyu beef bar
10:42
They don't have any artificial preservatives. They are organic, and they're a little bit more expensive
10:50
but the flavor is pretty good on some of these, and they have a variety of flavors
10:55
You can get those online on their website. But I also carry more of the common meat sources or meat sticks
11:07
So we've got Jack Links, beef sticks right there. Your more traditional meat sticks, I don't really care for the Slim Jims as much
11:19
They tend to be really high in sodium, and they're not the best quality. But these are a higher-quality meat stick that I found
11:26
There's the Jack Links again. So just having some of that stuff, like jerky
11:33
Another item that I think sometimes is overlooked is alcohol. Now, of course, alcohol is a pick-me-up and a morale booster
11:46
But in the case of things like Everclear, it actually can be used as a fuel
11:52
It can be used for sterilization purposes, especially the clear alcohols. But just having some of these little bottles of alcohol are definitely a pick-me-up kind of thing
12:10
Kind of fun to have. You know, there's no reason not to have these unless, of course, you strictly don't drink
12:16
That's fine. Regular coffee, ground coffee. And these are a couple small options that I've picked up
12:23
I think someone gave this to me for my birthday. So this is the Jack Daniels coffee
12:27
There's some Starbucks in a little can. So I won't open this until I need it
12:34
But I have means of making coffee without a coffee pot. I can do that in my cook pot, which I'll show you here in a minute
12:42
You can also do a pour-over filter, which is a great thing to throw in your kit
12:47
So I always keep some regular coffee with me as an option
12:51
All right, so another item that you can carry in your kit is these prepackaged meals
13:03
And these are what you would traditionally find at REI. These are used by backpackers and campers all over the world
13:11
They are fantastic because they are a complete meal. There are so many of these out on the market right now, a lot of good options
13:20
They are a simple way of cooking. You just add boiling water into the bag, close it up, let it sit, usually anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes, usually 10
13:33
Stir it up, and you have a delicious meal. And I have not tried this particular brand yet
13:39
These are the Alpine Fare. But they have really good flavors. I traditionally get Mountain House, and I don't have any Mountain House at this time
13:52
So I've been stocking up on these because I want to try these
13:56
Because they have some really just interesting different flavors. So this is spicy sausage mayonnaise, Kung Pao beef, grilled chicken pad thai, pork jambalaya
14:13
I mean, just really awesome stuff. Also I have some of these old Coleman meals
14:18
Now these, they don't make these anymore. These are pretty old. They are way past their expiration
14:25
But all they really are is macaroni of some sort of pasta with a dried seasoning packet, usually some kind of cheese mix
14:35
So they keep a really long time. And they are better than nothing
14:41
And I bought them on sale in clearance, and I've been going through them for years
14:45
But I still have some left. So those are definitely backups. Now getting back to protein sources and packaging
14:55
This is one of my favorites. You can find this at Walmart
15:01
It is a Mexican seasoned pork. The shelf life on this, let's see
15:11
This is good until 3 of 24. So I got some time on this
15:18
Don't have to worry about this one too much. But man, these are fantastic
15:22
Heat this up in your pot, throw it on a tortilla with some cheese, and you've got a taco, man
15:29
And they are awesome. Of course, different types of protein, energy bars, Clif bars are kind of a standard
15:37
There are better options nutritionally. But, you know, they're good to have
15:43
Speaking of Mountain House, here's a little dessert. This is the Cheesecake Bites
15:50
Haven't tried these yet, but I'm going to. They look pretty interesting. So don't discount not having dessert
15:57
You need to have some kind of sweets. That kind of stuff is a pick-me-up, and I think it's critical
16:06
Another item that I suggest you have in your kit are these liquid IVs
16:17
These are a hydration multiplier. And if you are dehydrated, put this in one of your Nalgene's full of water
16:27
and you have a delicious sweetened drink that is actually going to help with hydration
16:33
Way better than Gatorade, these are. Fantastic. You can find these at Walmart now
16:38
They also have them on Amazon. A lot of different flavors. Watermelon is the best
16:44
Strawberry is probably the second best. But get a big bag of those and have those ready to go
16:53
These go in all my hiking kits and my bags that I want when I'm going out
16:58
I always have a few of these with me. More coffee options
17:03
These are more instant coffee options. Just pour in the package into some hot water, and you've got a hot cup of coffee
17:13
Also some tea. A lot of people like tea. I'm not a big tea drinker, but I do have a few tea bags in my kit for other people
17:22
in case they want them. Another fantastic item you can find at your grocery store are the instant mashed potatoes from Idahoan
17:33
They have a lot of different flavors. They're very easy to prepare, and they're cheap
17:40
They're dirt cheap, like a buck something at the store, and they last a long time
17:44
So definitely pick up a bunch of these. Throw them in your kit
17:51
Here is some iced tea, flavored iced tea packages. So you just dump that in your water, and you've got some flavored water
18:00
So if you're treating water with iodine tablets or other ways of treating water
18:06
or maybe you're drinking from a well, it's good to have some flavored packets just to help with the taste of the water
18:16
You always want to have a variety of seasonings. I've got salt, pepper
18:21
I've got some garlic in here. There are some Old Bay individual packets that I've found
18:29
Just a variety of different seasoning packets that I've collected over the years
18:35
I keep a bag of that so I can doctor up whatever I'm cooking
18:40
It gives me some options. Snacks are important, and trail mix is awesome
18:51
It's high energy. It tastes good. It has a variety of items in it like raisins and nuts and chocolate, which are great pick-me-ups and just great energy sources
19:02
So if you can find these individual trail mixes, that's great. I like to have a few of these on hand as well
19:11
Of course, I've got to rotate through these a little bit sooner. They last quite as long as the other stuff, but they're great to have
19:21
Of course, with all this food, you absolutely need some means of cooking it
19:28
So that's really up to you how you want to do that. Everybody's got different options that they're comfortable with
19:36
You may want a Coleman stove if you're cooking for a family because it has a couple burners and it has a larger fuel source
19:48
One thing for myself that I like are these gas canister stoves
19:57
This one is the Camp Chef Striker. It's very similar to JetBoil
20:04
It ranks very high on the Internet. I've done some research on these
20:09
I haven't tried this one yet, but these kind of stoves are fantastic for a quick way of boiling water
20:19
and then adding that to your dehydrated meals or making your ramen
20:24
You want to make sure that with these stoves that you have some of these canisters
20:28
I suggest getting a bunch of them and storing them in a separate container
20:35
Make a separate container that has your stove, has fuel bottles, has some plates, some bowls, silverware, cups, collapsible cups
20:47
a pour-over coffee filter with some filters that go with it that fit it
20:54
small cutting boards, knives, just general food prep gear. You should have this anyway if you're a camper
21:03
I keep a Rubbermaid container filled with that kind of stuff. That way, when it's time, I know exactly where that stuff is
21:12
I'm not rooting around in my kitchen in the dark trying to find it now. One of the best options that I've found are these Rubbermaid Action Packers
21:23
These do not have a gasket on them, but they have a very good locking handle or locking lid like that
21:37
They're very tough. They will not collapse. They won't dent. They will not bend
21:43
They're sturdy, and they come in a variety of sizes. I like the smaller ones. They're not cheap
21:49
They're definitely probably one of the more expensive options for containers, but if you get one that is this size, it's easy for one fella with this thing filled up to carry
22:02
If you get it too big, then it gets heavy. I have several of these. These are always filled with my food and my kitchen gear
22:10
Just a great item to have. There are several companies on the market that sell these food containers
22:22
Basically, what these are, they're very similar to your mountain houses. They are a dehydrated food that you add water to
22:32
This particular company, this is Valley Food Storage. They prepackage in these very tough containers
22:46
The thing is, with these meals, these are going to serve more than one person
22:54
This one here, this is chicken ala king. It takes a lot longer to cook these. These are not quick
23:01
This one takes anywhere from 18 to 20 minutes cooking time. Once you add your boiling water, you're going to need a bigger pot and a bigger stove
23:14
because this has five servings per pouch. But, like some of the other options that I showed you, this one is organic
23:28
It doesn't have a bunch of preservatives in it. It has a lot of natural ingredients
23:36
Everything I'm reading on the back here, I can pronounce. There's nothing weird in it
23:41
We've got the chicken ala king, one. I've got freeze-dried bananas, two
23:52
I've got Italian wild risotto, three. I've got strawberry oatmeal. That's ten servings in that pouch
24:06
That's four pouches. I've got maple brown sugar oatmeal, ten servings in this one
24:15
We're up to five pouches. Apple cream of wheat, ten servings in this pouch. We're up to six
24:24
Fettuccine Alfredo, five servings in this pouch. Irish pub cheddar soup, five servings
24:42
I'm using chicken teriyaki, five servings. Freeze-dried potato dices, ten servings. Last one, mac and cheese, five servings
24:57
In closing with this video, my advice is get yourself a bucket from a company
25:05
It can be Valley. It can be anybody else you choose as a backup for true emergencies
25:10
Then build a container of things that you're able to find at your grocery stores that your family likes
25:20
Or that you like. Then you rotate through that. Use that throughout the year when you're camping, hiking
25:28
Also have it stocked so if there is an emergency, you have more stuff than just that bucket
25:35
Now you have a wide variety of items for every taste in your household
25:42
You're not going to be just eating MREs, which are super expensive, weigh a ton, take up a lot of room
25:51
These are much easier, cheaper options that you and your family are going to love
26:00
That's what I've got for you today. As always, stay safe. Thank you for watching the video
