What is going on YouTube
1:49
Prepared to wander out in the woods today and we're going to talk about a bug out bag
1:53
and my new bug out vehicle that I just got. So stick around for that
1:59
It's going to be a lot of fun. So 2021 has been pretty good to me so far
2:06
I was able to purchase a new vehicle, used vehicle I should say, a 2012 Nissan Frontier
2:15
My old car kind of shot craps and it was time to offload it and get into something better
2:19
and I was fortunate enough to find a really nice pickup truck for a decent price
2:24
It only had 40,000 miles on it for 2012 so I thought that was pretty awesome
2:28
Then that got me thinking that I really need to reassess my bug out bag and what I carry
2:34
in my truck in case something happens as far as an emergency
2:39
I want to be able to get out of the city, go somewhere and camp out on my way home to
2:47
get my wife. So what I decided on is to purchase this LA Police Gear Atlas 72
2:55
This is their big pack that they sell. Really an awesome pack and I'm going to go through what I've got stored in it and talk
3:04
about the features of the bag because really the focus of this video is the bag itself
3:08
and what I carry in it. Then we'll go back to the truck and kind of look around that a little bit and talk about
3:13
some of the things I'm carrying in my truck that supplement this bag
3:17
So let's get into it. First of all, this bag is really incredible for the price that you're going to pay for it
3:26
I think the LA Police Gear has these around $60-$65 somewhere in that neighborhood
3:35
For the price, you're getting a really well-made, well-thought-out, well-designed backpack that's
3:42
going to carry all your mission essentials and that's what I wanted. I want something that can carry enough gear to get me by for an overnighter easily and
3:50
have some extra stuff in there as well because you just never know what's going to happen
3:54
these days. It's getting kind of crazy out there so I want to make sure that I had everything that
3:59
I needed in one bag that I could just grab and I could go. That's what this is
4:04
This is my go bag. You can call it a bug out bag, a get home bag, whatever you want to call it
4:09
It's my go bag and it's going to be sitting in the back of my truck. So what I did is, when I put this together, I really thought about items that I had duplicates
4:20
of and luckily I have duplicates of a lot of stuff that I normally camp with
4:26
So my saw, my tarp, things like that, these are duplicates. They haven't been used very much but they're similar, if not the same, of the stuff that
4:36
I carry in my normal camping and bushcraft bags. You've seen videos on all those different types of bags and different scenarios that
4:45
I go out in the woods with. Well, this is no different. This is just a duplication of good equipment that's going to get me through a night in
4:55
the woods by myself. So first thing, let's go through this front pocket real quick
5:03
Huge front pocket, big admin pocket. Got a roll of heavy duty contractor trash bags
5:16
Got a good compass, waterproof notebook, couple of pens, and my Gerber strong arm
5:30
I believe that's what this is, the strong arm. Definitely a nice Gerber made in the USA blade
5:54
Also carrying a Gerber multi-tool. I've done reviews on that and it has a Bic kit with it as well
6:10
So got a little bit of everything in here. Field repairs, just needed tools
6:20
That's all I really have in this front pocket. There's plenty of pockets as you can see
6:24
There's a zipper pocket here, there's a couple slip pockets here, more organization down
6:30
below in this admin pocket. Just a lot of areas to put stuff and to organize, but I didn't need that much in there
6:44
Sitting below that is another zipper pocket right in here. I've got this police security light it's called
6:58
It's just an inexpensive AA battery, it's got about 250 lumens to it, but it's a nice
7:04
heavy duty tactical style flashlight. Doesn't break the bank. I picked it up at the hardware store
7:11
Up top here in this pocket, got an Energizer headlamp, some batteries for the flashlight
7:25
right in the headlamp
7:39
Two nice compression straps on each side of the pack. This helps maintain the load
7:43
You can really cinch this thing down. Awesome. Big long side pockets
7:53
In here I've got a Bako Laplander, I've got a Platypus Reservoir bladder, and then I've
8:06
got my Frontier Pro water filter
8:17
The nice thing about this front pocket that I failed to mention before is that it actually
8:30
opens up and you can actually store stuff down in here. I've got a pair of gloves ready to go
8:36
It's a good spot for a jacket or a helmet or something like that
8:42
So just a nice feature on the pack. The other side pocket over here, everything is really stiff
8:54
The zippers are stiff. Just got this package in this week. I've got my Stanley water bottle
9:03
It's a stainless bottle. This top part comes off. I can actually boil water in this if I have to
9:14
It's really nice about this pack is that it is a clamshell design
9:27
Meaning, once you get this thing unzipped, the whole thing opens up like a suitcase
9:40
That way you can really see the contents of your bag and organize everything
9:45
Of course, these three pockets in the lid, I haven't utilized those yet, but they're
9:50
definitely there for storage. And in here I've got some food items
9:58
I've got some ramen, some kind bars, beef snack sticks, coffee, just a little bit of
10:07
everything in there. Some cliff bars. Got my UCO wear mess kit
10:21
And in here I've got a titanium spork and a collapsible cup
10:29
I picked this up at Walmart. This bag, I've got tent stakes and a 550 cord
10:48
And I use the tent stakes that you can actually get at Walmart. These things are fantastic
10:53
They're half the price of the MSR ground hogs. Probably even more than that
10:59
Very inexpensive. And they last. And if you lose them, it's no big deal
11:05
I'm going to pick one up. I think they're like a buck or something a piece
11:09
And then a nice big hunk of 550 cord. So everything goes in that baggie
11:20
In here I've got some survival items. Some fast fire tinder cubes
11:35
Some fire sticks that I can shave down. Done a review on those. Lighter
11:49
And a whistle. And a small signal mirror. Also a match safe
12:01
I actually did a review on this. It's got a little bit of everything in it
12:08
Matches, small butane lighter. Some tinder quicks. Even a trick birthday candle
12:19
So just some different items to help me start a fire. Help save my bacon
12:25
Got a hidden woodsman pouch. This is a first aid kit. In here I've got
12:43
a well loved Stanley pot. I picked these up at Walmart for under 20 bucks
12:47
I think they were like 15 something. Everybody should have one of these as an extra
12:52
They do a great job and they're inexpensive. There's the mod I did to it
12:56
I took the tab off and put a split ring on it. Inside here I have a butane stove
13:00
And of course a good canister of butane fuel. Here I've got the
13:08
gas stove. I've got a gas stove. I've got a gas stove
13:14
I've got a gas stove. I've got a gas stove. I've got a gas stove
13:20
I've got a gas stove. I've got a gas stove. I've got a gas stove
13:26
I've got a gas stove. Here I've got the Helikon-Tex Swag Man Roll
13:34
I did a review of this a couple years ago. It's really a nice
13:40
multi-purpose item. You can use it as a blanket. You can use it as a poncho
13:44
Of course it's not for rain. It's for cold. But it definitely
13:50
is a nice multi-purpose item to wrap up in and keep me warm
13:54
Here I've got the Helikon-Tex 8x10 Camo Tarp. Just got that in as well
14:04
I'm going to be doing a review on that soon. So stay tuned for that
14:08
And then every bug-out bag should have some kind of thermal blanket. This can be used as a
14:14
ground cloth or I can wrap up in it. It's multi-purpose. It can be even used as a
14:18
tarp if I really need to. I much prefer it though to use it as a ground cloth
14:22
I think it's better that way. A better item suited for that
14:34
So you think we're done with pockets. We are not. There's a pocket up here. This is fleece-lined
14:38
And what I've got in here is a small pair of binoculars
14:42
Good for scouting stuff out. And back here is a water compartment
14:49
And I've got a platypus 3 liter 100 ounce bladder
14:59
with hose. So this is ready to set up for water. I can filter my water, put that in there
15:05
and store that. Really nice padding on this back panel. As you can see there's a nice
15:11
little pocket up here. As you can see there's an air channel
15:15
cut into it. Drain hole for the bladder. And it is stiff
15:23
There is a frame sheet inside here so that does help with maintaining
15:29
the load and maintaining the structure of the bag and the integrity of the bag
15:33
And then also we've got a hip belt that has MOLLE attachments on it
15:37
Which is definitely a nice addition. So I can put on a holster
15:41
or pistol mags or whatever I want to do with that. That's a nice addition right there. So
15:49
that's it with the bag. Well padded straps as you can see
15:55
ergonomic cut to them. That kind of S shape. And then you're probably wondering what these buckles are right here
16:03
LA Police Gear sells a chest pack that clips into this. So if you're interested in that
16:09
you can check that out. Of course the sternum strap is removable
16:13
that way you can adjust it and put it different heights on here
16:21
if you need to go higher or lower you can. So that's a nice
16:25
feature right there. And of course quick release straps. So you can tell it's a
16:37
well made bag. It's very well organized and the design of it is perfect. I think they
16:41
did a great job and for the price you cannot beat it. And that's why I love it for a
16:45
truck bag because it's something that I can leave in my truck and if God forbid
16:49
something happens and someone takes off with it I'm not losing everything
16:53
I can replace that bag fairly easily and cheaply. And then the contents are all duplicate stuff that
16:59
I have in my gear so I'm not out completely for my
17:03
main camping gear. And that's the thing with these truck bags, get home bags
17:08
you want to be familiar with the contents and know how to use them
17:12
but you don't want to be dipping into your bag all the time to go camping
17:16
because you're going to end up forgetting something leaving something out, something's going to get
17:20
lost, broken, whatever, or worn out. So if you can slowly but surely build up a duplicate
17:26
list of things and look for economic ways around it. I do a lot of shopping at
17:32
big box stores and hardware stores looking for equipment that will maintain
17:36
the integrity of the contents of my pack but still not break the bank
17:42
and that's the whole purpose of this bag it's an economical bag and
17:48
it's got everything I need to let me out in the woods for a night. Now
17:52
it weighs in around between 17 and 18 pounds somewhere in that neighborhood
17:58
that's dry weight, there's no water in it of course when I start filling up with water it's going to get a lot heavier
18:02
but it's still maintainable and easy to carry, very comfortable bag, hiked in here in these woods
18:08
a little bit and very comfortable really felt great on the back, I didn't have any
18:16
complaints whatsoever so I think it's definitely an option for you if you're looking to put together
18:22
a go bag for your truck or vehicle, maybe this is something to consider. So let's go take a
18:28
look at my truck now and see what's inside I'll show you what's in there as far as
18:32
other items that I keep and that may be useful in the event of an emergency
18:52
back here I've got a snow shovel since it's so small back here I've got
18:58
under seat storage here I've got jumper cables
19:09
there's a converter pack that I can actually hook up to my battery
19:13
and convert that to a plug-in scenario that way if I want to
19:19
inflate a mattress or something on a campground, really handy some WD-40, just some essentials
19:28
nothing huge I keep a lot in this bag right here, this rides behind the passenger seat
19:40
got a nice size first aid kit tool roll
19:51
this is just with wrenches bundle of zip ties some duct tape
20:12
and some assorted tools in the back here so this is mainly my tool bag
20:28
back here I keep a pair of shoes just in case I'm in dress shoes
20:34
because I usually am at work I'm usually in loafers of some sort
20:38
hat and gloves window scraper another pair of gloves more heavy duty winter gloves
20:46
more under seat storage here just got some cargo straps so
20:56
not a whole lot of extra gear but a few things to get me by
21:00
to go with my bag and then of course my backpack can go right back there
21:12
alright that's it for today's video I hope you enjoyed it just a quick run down of my bug out bag
21:18
and my new truck nothing too earth shattering really it's just all common sense stuff
21:24
I always make sure that I have my bag with me you just never know what's going to be happening these days
21:30
things are getting kind of weird and in case of an event
21:34
I want to be able to get home and get home safely
21:38
and that may mean me spending the night somewhere along the road out in the woods
21:42
and if that's the case I've got the possibility of actually spending the night comfortably
21:48
with these few items that I have of course you could always go bigger
21:52
go bigger backpack more gear, more warm gear it's just hard to really
22:00
maintain all that especially for me, I'm in Ohio I'm not traveling a lot of backcountry
22:06
so I don't have to have sleeping bags and all that kind of stuff
22:10
I can get by with just a couple warmies with me like that's
22:16
Helikon-Tex Swagman roll that should be enough yeah hopefully you guys enjoyed the video
22:22
and we will see you next time on The Prepared Wanderer, thanks for watching
