Quiz Time! Which is a BERRY?
Feb 27, 2025
Which ones are berries? Were you as shocked by the answer as I was?
Botanically speaking, a true berry is “a fleshy fruit produced from a single flower with one ovary and typically has several seeds embedded in its flesh.” ...so bananas, kiwis, eggplants, lemons, zucchinis, watermelons, and even blueberries are all technically berries.
Meanwhile, strawberries and blackberries aren't true berries at all. Strawberries are "aggregate accessory fruits" (those visible seeds are actually individual fruits!!), while blackberries are "aggregate fruits" made of multiple drupelets.
To make it even MORE confusing... when nutrition articles and food guidelines tell us to eat berries every day, they mean the strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries because of their special health benefits - high polyphenols, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity.
But does this botanical technicality matter in our daily lives? Not really. All these foods are nutritional powerhouses packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Whether they're "true berries" or not, they all deserve a place on our plates for both health and flavor.
What was your biggest surprise from this list? I'm still wrapping my head around eggplant being a berry! 🍌🥝🍋🍉
