Smoking On a Pellet Grill in a Power Outage

I decided it was high time to test out both my Pit Boss Austin XL Pellet Grill and my Jackery Explorer 1000 solar generator in a real emergency-type situation. The test was to see if a pellet grill is a feasible alternative cooking option if there's no power. I wanted to know just how much electricity a pellet grill needs and if my Jackery could handle it, even for a long smoke. Did I ruin Thanksgiving for my family? Or did a slay it? Shoutout to Malcolm Reed. Thanks for the amazing guidance on smoking my turkey (and so many other things)! Here's the recipe I was following - https://howtobbqright.com/2021/11/04/butter-herb-smoked-turkey/ Pantry Preparedness is a trademark of Income School LLC, an Idaho Limited Liability Company

Hey, good morning. It's Thanksgiving Day here at our home, and I've got a turkey to smoke
0:04
but I wanted to do something interesting. I've got this Jackery solar generator here. I bought this last year on Black Friday
0:17
I just want to show you it's currently at 99%. So it's pretty much full. This is the Explorer 1,000
0:24
110 volt,000 watts is what it's capable of. And, uh, should be way more than I need, obviously, to power this
0:32
But I was a little bit curious to see what sort of draw this would pull, as well as just how well this would handle a, you know, four hours or so of smoking
0:40
In part because I want to test out all of my emergency year all the time. Solar generators are something I was fairly skeptical about
0:47
but I found over the last year a lot of uses for it in everyday life, which I highly recommend using it fairly regularly if it's something that's going to be in your emergency kit
0:55
but also because batteries like these, they do tend to slowly drain
1:00
and once they're completely out, leaving them dead for a long time is a problem
1:04
So if you have a solar battery like this and it sits in storage for several years
1:09
that's going to be a problem. Now, I've been impressed by this one
1:13
I charge it to a full charge after I last used it. It's been a couple of months, and it's still 99%
1:18
So didn't even recharge it. So we're going to plug it in
1:21
We're going to get this thing warming up, and then I'm going to put the turkey on
1:30
I'm plugging it into this. All right, we're gonna turn this thing on
1:36
Yeah, no problem. Because if it turns off while we're gone. It won't
1:41
It's putting out currently 2 watts. Can handle 1,000. Now we'll kick it on
1:47
We'll set it to smoke. That's just how we get it warming
1:53
And it currently drawing 187 watts And this also holds capacity Capacity or a thousand sorry a thousand watt hours A thousand watts for an hour
2:05
If it's using 200 watts, that's more than five hours. It's not even using 200 for watt
2:12
I'll check on it. So I'm generally following a recipe from Malcolm Reed from how to Barbecue right
2:24
I'll link to that in the description because he's good. He certainly knows what he's talking about
2:31
So this is going to be my rub here. It's basically a mix of like a poultry seasoning, a poultry rub actually is what I chose
2:40
Some granulated garlic, garlic powder, and kosher salt, coarse kosher salt. So that's what I'm going to be rubbing on here
2:49
First I'm going to brush on a bunch of this butter. For you like avid grillers, I'm probably doing stuff wrong, I'm sure
2:58
I bet Malcolm would be disappointed in me. I don't know. I think he's awesome and would probably be glad to see me doing it
3:06
I did the turkey three, four years ago for my wife's family and on the pellet grill
3:12
And ever since then, this is what we have. You've credit where it's due
3:19
My dad started it the year before he did our family turkey
3:24
And my wife is like, oh my gosh, this is the best turkey I've ever had
3:30
So she's the one that made it happen with her family too. Inspired by my dad in a lot of ways
3:39
All right, I'm just hanging on to that. So once I got the grill good and lit, I went back out there to turn up the temperature to 300
3:45
And it was only pulling 26 watts. So things are going to last just fine
3:51
I went ahead and turned up the temperature. didn't even change the wattage. Like fries out a little bump for a second and then jump back down sitting around 25 26 watts So basically it going to work really well to use that solar generator I find a solar generator be a really handy thing for emergency preparedness
4:09
especially for kind of the normal everyday emergencies. It's a lot smaller than a normal generator
4:14
It's quiet. I can use it indoors. I can power a little electric heater with it. I can power lights with it, all sorts of stuff
4:20
I have the solar panels to go with it. So I can recharge pretty well during the day
4:24
I mean, as long as I have sun, and as long as the emergency doesn't last like forever, we're pretty good
4:29
But I also have one of those tri-fuel larger generators of Furman from Costco
4:35
And that's definitely for like powering the freezers and stuff. Anyway, just thought I'd share that
4:40
It's not pulling a whole lot of wattage. So we're going to see how this lasts throughout the day. But I'm pretty confident we're going to be just fine
4:45
Just listening to some Jocko podcast. But now I've got to run out to the garden
4:49
Calls for a little bit of onion. And believe it or not, our onions haven't like completely
4:55
gone to seed or anything yet. We've got onions still here to harvest. I'll grab a few of these
5:04
I think that will do. I'll get one more. See, we're up to temperature yet? Let's go check out how much power we're using. We are up to
5:14
temperature. It says 305. Still, 26 watts. I'm at 94%. It was pulling more power at the beginning
5:22
when it was igniting. But now we're steady at 26 back inside
5:55
You know the recipe good when it tells you to put an entire stick of butter inside the turkey
6:25
Alright, it's in. I also just found out that Jocko doesn't like sushi, so I knew I liked him
6:39
I'm gonna add some more pellets to make sure I don't run out, but we're good
6:55
Currently using 46 watts, still a 93%
7:10
Alright and this my friends is a beautiful smoked turkey. I already took a bunch of drippings out to make gravy with
7:18
The jacket is still at 71% running off 24 watts. I'm gonna call that a success
7:24
both on the turkey and on being able to use that jackery to run this because you know most of the
7:32
energy being used up here is from the pellets obviously not from the electricity so it's a great
7:38
alternative cookie source i have a normal propane grill too i also like to cook with charcoal so
7:42
uh i think knowing and being capable of and having the resources for multiple alternative
7:48
cooking methods is definitely the way to go for real emergency preparedness anyway thanks for joining me
7:54
Until next time
