BOAT LIFE PROBLEMS What's Gone Wrong This Time ! Sailing Vlog 80 Sailing Ruby Rose
Feb 8, 2024

Good luck, baby So I need to start here, like that? Yep
2:21
So once we've dived on the prop, you can see that the thin nylon line has wound itself around the gap between the propeller and the prop shaft
2:35
As the prop turns, it heats up and melts the line. The line then welds itself to the prop shaft
2:41
This needs to be removed in very small pieces using a Stanley knife and a chisel
2:50
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft
2:56
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft
3:02
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft
3:08
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft
3:14
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft

The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft
3:56
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft
4:02
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft
4:08
The line is then pulled out of the prop shaft. Nick dove under the boat, tried to cut as much of it away as he could
4:15
and thought that he succeeded in that fairly well. Day 2, we are sailing along, motor sailing along actually
4:25
and suddenly we hear this like insanely deafening vibration. You know how an aeroplane going overhead is like a vibrating sound
4:35
but it's like a roar. That is the sound but it was coming from underneath our boat
4:41
and it was utterly terrifying. I was in the cockpit by myself, Nick was downstairs
4:48
and just on pure instinct I jumped up and I put the engine into neutral
4:53
and as soon as I did that the noise stopped. We couldn't work out what it was, didn't even know if it was the engine
4:59
had no idea, never heard anything like that before coming from the boat
5:03
It was just really scary. Day 3 happens again, twice in about an hour
5:10
and that's when we realised that something was wrong. Nick went downstairs to inspect the engine
5:16
He felt that the stuffing box was really, really hot to touch
5:20
and so now we've been in kind of diagnosis mode. I'll let him pick it up from here because he's the one who's been doing all the tests
5:27
and he's the one currently underneath the boat trying to sort it all out
5:32
But that's the series of events that happened and yeah, pretty stressful
5:37
But hopefully he'll be able to sort it. Don't drop that
5:53
It's f***ing swell actually. I actually wrote Danina a letter. A letter
6:01
Do you want a synopsis? I want you to explain the letter comment
6:06
considering you're not like living in the 50s. Living in the sound of a pigeon
6:11
It's the first time we've actually used scuba gear in anger. Yeah. Ever
6:18
So the problem is that this thin polyprop, literally, if you look at this, you feel how thick that is
6:30
Yeah, God, that is thick. And that's just a bit of it
6:34
So there's like literally about 3 or 4 mil of just solid plastic
6:39
that was just getting stuck between the prop and the shaft. So I cut that off and I wound it off and that's part of it
6:49
Don't forget I took a load off the other day. So how does that explain why the stuffing box was so hot
6:55
Because the water, the inside of the stern tube has got flutes in it
7:00
and the flutes draw water up to cool everything. So it just blocked it, just blocked the water into it
7:05
So basically there wasn't enough water getting through. But we'll have to just monitor it
7:09
But I'm kind of hope, kind of like cautiously optimistic that this was the problem and it's going to go away now
7:16
If it doesn't go away we'll have to have the boat hauled and that'll be our sailing done until we can get it fixed
7:21
So what was causing the vibration? I don't know. I have no idea what that is
7:26
I can only assume. It's either just like friction stopping it and it's just trying to turn and it's pulling
7:35
Stopping what, the prop from spinning? Yeah. Okay. And it's just, yeah, I'm hoping, hoping that's okay
7:41
The other thing is I need to now monitor the water ingress
7:45
to make sure when we're sailing that we don't have loads of water pissing because I loosened the nuts every time this morning
7:51
Anyways, anyway, that's, that's, that's what, I'm happy. I'm happy we got that done
7:57
And this is now the state of our cockpit. So I don't think we're particularly good YouTubers right now
8:08
because we have been here in Cartagena for almost a week, five days, six days, and we're leaving the day after tomorrow
8:17
and we have done no filming at all. We haven't even really done much work
8:24
I've done a little bit of editing on an episode that's really annoying me. I won't tell you what it is because I don't want you to be prejudiced against it
8:31
but it's just not coming together. We haven't done any sightseeing. We have barely cleaned the boat
8:37
We certainly haven't done any filming. The reason for all this is because we have just been having way too much fun
8:45
A, relaxing here in Cartagena, but B, we have had three sets of people, three sets of lovely followers
8:53
come and buy us a beer, take us out for lunch, take us out for a sail
8:59
We had a really lovely couple take us out on their lagoon
9:03
and we had a very, very lovely man from the UK drive down from his kind of mountain home
9:11
the day that we got here and take us out for a walk around the city
9:15
Yesterday we had another couple who have their boat here, not here, here, about an hour's drive away
9:22
They're port-bound like everyone else in this part of Spain. They came and drove and saw us and it was meant to be a beer, a pre-dinner beer
9:34
They ended up sleeping over on our new friends on the catamaran
9:39
Eighteen hours later they're still hanging around, which is awesome. We tried to go out this morning to do some filming
9:49
and to do some touristy things and show you guys. Monday it turns out everything's closed
9:55
Nothing was open so we turned around and came back to the boat. Tomorrow we will try and do better
10:01
There's a Roman amphitheatre, there's a Roman forum, there's some really awesome things to see
10:06
We want to go and see them and appreciate them and take you guys along for the journey
10:11
We're going to do that tomorrow, I promise. In the meantime we are just slowly working, slowly relaxing
10:18
Nick's gone to do some laundry. I'm going to get on with this episode that's really doing my hair in
10:25
Wish me luck and we'll see you bright and early tomorrow morning
10:29
for a lovely walk into town. We should explain to people what we're doing
10:33
We are in Cartagena. It is mid-September and as you can probably see from the light behind us
10:39
it is now cloudy so we're getting the occasional cloudy day which is some relief because this time last week it was unbearably hot
10:46
You've just heard us whinging about how warm it is all the time so now we can whinge about how cloudy it is
10:51
We're actually really happy for it to be cool. Cartagena is a 2,500 year old city which kind of blows my mind
11:01
First adopted by the Phoenicians in 300 BC and then the Romans turned up and did all this amazing stuff
11:07
The thing about this is that the amazing stuff is still here. There's a 2,000 year old amphitheater
11:12
We're going to do a little bit of sightseeing today. We have to leave tomorrow or the day after
11:16
We really need to get moving to try and get up to our port for winter
11:21
We've got a couple of hundred miles to do. We're going to try and day sail it but in the meantime
11:26
what we're going to do is go and show you the sights of this beautiful Spanish city
11:32
Here we are in the Old Town. It's made up of one long shopping street and lots of little sized streets coming off of it
11:40
The buildings are really interesting because you've got these historic buildings right next to buildings that are obviously quite modern
11:46
Shall we go and see the Roman theatre? We came here yesterday and it was closed so yes, in we go
12:04
It's a heavy door. Do you want to do the other ones
12:17
Do you want to do the Forum? I'd like to see the Forum. Do you want to see the Forum as well
12:29
My legs are ready. The Forum
13:08
It's an awesome museum isn't it? Yes, there's obviously a lot of money under it
13:12
Here's the thing, some of this stuff is 2200 years old. So just to put that in perspective or say it a different way, that's 2200 years old
13:20
And the quality of this stuff is greater than many civilisations on earth today
13:26
Like how is it that 2200 years ago they had central heating, they had heating or plumbing, they had all sorts of mad stuff
13:33
Like crazy stuff, 2200 years ago. It blows my mind. I say that a lot, this blows my mind, 2200 years
13:42
And you go back to ancient Egypt, they were going around 5000 years ago and doing mad stuff
13:46
These people had trade routes, like 2000 years ago they had trade routes
13:50
they had a whole network of things, they were trading with North Africa
13:54
the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Phoenicians as well. It's nuts, it's crazy
14:01
Crazy, crazy, crazy. Look at this, mate. That was hammered out 2000 years ago, right
14:11
I've seen people's boats with far worse graphics than that. Why can't you paint your boat name straight when they could do it 2000 years ago
14:19
It's just laziness. So in our continually expanding education
14:35
this is a Roman, it's a form and a thermite, so it's Roman baths
14:40
So those, I kind of think they were blocks to hold a false floor
14:44
and they ran hot water and kind of steam underneath the floors
14:48
You think they had steam baths and saunas that had hot air and hot water
14:53
pumped underneath them 2000 years ago? It's nuts, it's nuts. Yeah, it's just a crazy, crazy place
14:59
Just to have the original paintwork still in place. Mind-blowing and, you know, why you should all, if you're not European
15:08
come and visit Europe because it is just nuts. Steeped in history, beautiful, food's good, lovely and cheap, weather's good
15:15
What else do you want? So just to put a little bit of a note on this
15:21
So just to put a little bit of a nautical but yet slightly tongue-in-cheek spin on this, This paintwork, this paintwork is two and a half thousand years older than our antifoul
15:30
and it's in better condition than our antifoul. So watch on. Well, my little Cartagenian chicken pie
15:38
we have come to the end of our time, almost our time here in Cartagena
15:42
So it's been a really, really good time. We have come to the end of our time, almost our time here in Cartagena
15:49
So it's been, well, it's beautiful. It's beautiful. I love the heritage. I love the culture
15:55
I love the Roman stuff. I love all the architecture, the archaeology
15:59
Other things that start with arch. Archie bear? Archie bear. Anyways, we, yeah, loved it here
16:07
Been really lovely, but it's time to go. We are in, coming into the shoulder season
16:12
Summer's over. We're now firmly into fall or autumn, as we say
16:16
And that means that winds are becoming variable. We're getting kind of like three days of easterly, then a westerly
16:23
And then, so we need to pick our weather when there's a little bit more carefully. We don't have established weather patterns at the moment
16:28
Anyways, we have a two day weather window or three day weather window
16:33
to get ourselves further along the coast. We only have 200 miles to go until our marina for wintering
16:42
And we've got a month to do it in. Yeah. So that's it. That's where we are
16:47
So we've got 30 days of the 200 miles. We're just going to... People make them. What
16:52
Oh, Jesus effing Christ. You and your massive, massive jinxiness. I'm not a jinx. I think that you just think that I'm a jinx
16:58
Jonah, they called her Jonah. She is a Jonah. We're coming to our favourite square in Catena
17:06
What's this square called? San Francisco, positive... Rather than... I'm just going to pan you around
17:10
Look at this, right? It's amazing. The thing is, Teresa hasn't already mentioned it
17:15
these are rubber plants. Like rubber plants. They're like the type of things that you had when you were at college
17:20
that died and had one insipid looking leaf on it. These things are like monstrous
17:26
So, yeah, our final evening here. We're going to go for a couple of very nice beers
17:32
And then... This is what I love about Spain. Sorry, sorry, what do you love about Spain
17:39
I love that we're just in this public square and then behind us there's just all these children
17:45
just having an amazing time. I think it's an organised thing, but still, you see that everywhere in Spain
17:50
Families out, children out. All these kind of public spaces. It is amazing
17:54
And I do love the whole cultural thing they do. Anyways, beer time
18:00
See you later. Next week on Sailing Ruby Rose, well, I mentioned it earlier in this episode
18:07
and now you get to watch it. We went for a sail on a Lagoon 400 and, believe it or not, we had some thoughts
18:14
Thank you so much for watching this week's video. If you like what we do and you want to see what we do every week
