Building the 80 series to get the best suspension performance possible.
i wanted to see if changing coil springs would allow the suspension to move more freely and improve the flex, it changed the way it worked more then i thought!!

We're back again, we've gone and purchased some parts for the 80s, that's another little
0:04
build video for the 80 series. So at the moment we're currently sitting on like a 1.5, 2 inch lift, so low, low and wide
0:11
My up travel obviously isn't much and I keep unseating my rear coils massively
0:16
They don't like seating back up. I've got retainers on the bottom, but there's no, I need like a dropout cone
0:22
So I've gone and changed and we've gone and purchased some 4 inch coils
0:27
We've got some 4 inch coils, we went new lower control arms, upper control arms, tyre rods
0:32
panhards, we've got all the rods. The whole purpose of this video is, I'll show you how I'm putting them in, my thought process
0:39
is I'm just going to drive up my flex ramp, let my coil unseat, drop the new coil in
0:44
come back down and do the opposite side. Hopefully should be a nice straight forward one
0:49
But I also wanted to make sure and see, I know flex comes mostly from shocks and shock
0:55
length, but I wanted to see if the coils actually change anything at all
1:00
So what I'll do is I'll put it up, flex it in 2, like on my 1.5, 2 inch kit, flex it
1:06
on that and then measure it and see if it makes any difference because it might give me more up travel which hopefully in turn might give me more down travel
1:13
But we'll find out, it's more just an educational video for myself really and may help someone
1:18
in the future if they're looking around for it. So look at what we got, we got a whole heap of Dovenson stuff
1:25
Pretty much most of it's all Dovenson, I didn't get Superior. 1
1:29
This cost me $1000 less than Superior. 2. I ordered it and it come the next day
1:35
I ordered it off Roadrunner Offroad, they ship from Melbourne, they rang me a couple
1:41
hours after I put the order in just to make sure I got the spring rates correctly and
1:46
just confirming everything and I literally received it the next morning at like 7.30
1:50
in the morning. So obviously you're going to have a slight bend in your tape measure but to centre I
2:09
have 900 grams. Hey Dad! Hey Dad! Get in the car. Get in the car
2:14
I have 925 mil. So we have 450. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right
2:18
I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right
2:21
I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right
2:24
I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right
2:27
I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right. I'm going to have to get the spring rates right
2:30
I'm going to have to get the spring rates right
2:51
Now we'll go get our measurement here. We have 805 and with our tuck we've got 400, say 405
3:10
So we're 400 mil of difference in the front. Didn't go to plan as well as I'd hoped
3:17
But we got it, we got it. We done the old dodgy ratchet strap trick
3:22
Ratchet straps. You want to strap each side so that way it compresses the spring
3:28
I don't really want to pinch my hands, I won't grab the maillet
3:35
Left hand side is, from what I could see online, fuel tank is your left hand side of your vehicle
3:40
So technically it's when you're sitting in the car, you're on the right side
3:44
And then passenger side is your left side. So they come left and right coils to suit heavier weights per side of vehicle
3:51
As you can see how easy it unseats them. So up and out
3:57
This is pretty much my length difference. So from what I believe when I brought the car, these were 2 inch
4:06
These are now 4. So yeah that would be pretty close to your 50 mil
4:10
Which should be another 2 inches. To help me go get them in I've just loosened the back bolt on my radius arm
4:18
That little bit there. On the passenger side it's got a little divot here on the front
4:23
Driver side the divot's on the other side. If you're wondering why I'm using a hammer to crack it
4:34
I've jammed my hands in them a few too many times and it's not fun
4:43
Especially in tight little awkward spots. So that pretty much is a 4 inch coil just unseated
4:52
Like it's just loose enough. Meter, meter 5. I'm going to go check the other side
5:00
This is just with the sway bar disconnected. 400. I think I had 405 before
5:05
Again not a massive difference between the two. As you can see
5:09
I wouldn't even say it's really 50 mil. I dare say those old ones are a bit sagged and soft
5:14
Now these will be a bit better suited for the setup I've got in here
5:18
Another thing I'll explain while I'm here looking at the car on the rear of this
5:22
Long arm kits in the rear of patrols, anything coiled, is exactly for this
5:29
If you look at the direction my wheel is pointing. It's called rear steer
5:35
What happens is when you start to droop down it turns your wheel so you steer in a different direction
5:40
When you put a longer arm in instead of being on that direction it might kick it this way a bit more
5:45
To be straight. To be straight with the vehicle. It's good for obviously real long, real hard technical tracks
5:52
It's quite a big bit of rear steer. Which can just put your rear end off the correct line and put you in a bit of a sticky spot sometimes
6:01
But you've just got to learn how to drive and steer with it as a standard car. There's the coil
6:06
The coil doesn't unseat. So my problem before was it was unseating from the top
6:10
Dropping down and then when it was trying to seat back up there it wasn't sitting too pretty
6:15
It's loose. So I'll put the retainer on the bottom. We are doing the lower control arms now
6:23
Rubber mallet. Just going to go and hit one out. You can buy adjustable ones to obviously suit your lift
6:33
Depending on your lift. From where I ordered them. Where I ground it off road it just said 11mm to suit anything bigger than a 2 inch lift
6:42
So we've gone and gotten that as you can see. It's slightly bigger
6:50
I've got the bolt on the other end just so they line up
6:54
So I'll give you the idea. And then I've got adjustable uppers to get my pinion angle correct once I..
7:16
And then just pry it like this until it wants to sort of go through
7:21
Another good little thing with the kit that I got from Roadrunner
7:26
They send you upper control arm bolts. I managed to get one out
7:33
The other one you can't get out without removing the coil. And I believe there's like a bracket mounted there where the handbrake runs through
7:42
You've got to dismantle all of that just to get the bolts out. So they send new bolts
7:48
So what I'm going to do is just go and cut them. We've gone and jacked the diff on the..
8:06
Well the pinion. On the diff. To get it parallel with the transfer case
8:13
Now I was just checking to make sure that the arms are actually longer. I just poked one of the old ones back in and it looks to be about that 15mm longer
8:21
Which my lower arms... My lower arms were 11mm longer. So now I'll go spin out my new ones and put them in
8:30
Because then that way I can pretty much move this. I've just got to do my rear pan hard
8:34
Rear pan hard at the moment, what's happening. Perfect spot for it
8:38
So here it bolts to the shadow. Perfect spot for it. So here it bolts to the chassis
8:44
And then it comes across and bolts to the diff. The more you bring the diff lower from the chassis
8:52
What it tends to do is it pulls the car to one side
8:57
You can see the tyre sort of sits inside the flare. And that's why you need adjustable pan hards
9:08
I don't know how well you can see that. But it's currently pulling my tyres to the driver side
9:14
So I'm going to pull them back the other way. I'm just going to pop that out and put the adjustable one in
9:18
Make it longer obviously to allow for it. And it will pull the tyres back in to where they need to be
9:22
Rear pan hard is in. The adjustable one. So I went about 20mm bigger than this one
9:28
Put it in and then adjusted it. What I did to help align the diff is I put a ratchet strap on that corner of the diff
9:37
Because that's the side that was poking out. Went up to my chassis and just tensioned it a bit
9:41
Until it just shifted over. Until the bolt hole lined up. As for straightening it
9:47
I got a straight edge or a level. I didn't use level but these are pretty new tyres
9:53
Should be close enough. I went off like a big lug. The same size lugs
9:59
Up to the guard. And both sides. Yeah I got both sides just touching. Anyway
10:07
Pretty close to the same theoretically. And then eyeing it. What we're doing
10:13
We're getting the original arm to get our set length. Spinning it out
10:17
And we'll just make it like 10-15mm longer. Try and get them even
10:21
And then put the lock nut against one. Leave one just in case we need to tweak it a couple of mm here and there
10:25
As you can see we're already. 5mm longer. So we'll get a couple more spins out of this
10:33
To get it the right length. We went and got one set in the car perfectly
10:39
And then we locked it with the nuts. On this side. Then we've gone and got our second one
10:45
And just put our bolt through. Both ends make sure they're the exact same size
10:49
We're just on our flex track here. We're just doing another video
10:53
But I thought I would finish and end my. Coils and rear arm sort of video
10:57
And get my measurements out here. Because the car is. I think it's pretty close to fully flexed where it is
11:03
It's hard because I don't think I really lifted a wheel. But it feels like it's it
11:07
I think the rear might have just came out a bit. But I'll give you all my measurements here
11:11
To see if changing arms and coils. And all that sort of stuff does make any difference
11:15
To your flex. Or if it's just purely shock length. So we'll go and get a couple measurements
11:21
And let you know. So my front one here. To the centre
11:27
455 fully open. I'm going to take a guess. 920. I could take my coil out
11:37
Fully compressed. 415. We have. 975
11:49
I'll go and put all the measurements. Here. From previous to now
11:55
The whole reason I put 4 inch coils. Is because the 2 inch ones
11:59
Unseat horribly. And they only just unseat. Which is good. So they will reseat nice and easily
