How's it going, my friends? Today I want to show you in this video as part of our series on
0:06
Automating our watering for our gardens. This is like one of the most valuable things you can do to help ensure that you are able to grow food and that you can do it consistently
0:16
So many gardens fail just because it's hard to keep up with throughout the summer with vacations with activities and you just get busy and honestly a lot of times you kind of get tired of fooling with the garden every day if you can automate the water
0:29
watering entirely, you're going to succeed at gardening. I can almost guarantee it
0:37
unless you make another major mistake. This is one of the big things. So we've already had a
0:41
video about connecting in to our water supply, what the setup looks like, the things that are
0:48
involved. Now I want to show you putting in the first sprinkler valve, how we put that in
0:55
what that looks like. And I'll talk a little bit about why I'm doing it the way I'm doing it
0:59
What I'm doing is I'm putting my sprinkler valves all around instead of having all the valves in one big box
1:08
So we're going to talk about that here in just a second. So first, though, we're going to connect into our supply line
1:13
Our supply line is right here in the ground. And I have already put in a T
1:18
Now, if you just have a supply line coming in and you can't put in a brand new T, like it's not a new supply line
1:25
It's easy. You just have to cut the supply line and then usually leave it
1:29
a space like here, you need a space of about two and a half inches or so. And then you just
1:35
shove in the T, pretty straightforward with the two clamps. I showed how you do that clamping
1:40
And we're going to do another one here in just a second. We're going to come off of that T and go to our very first valve. And I'm just going to show you what all of that looks like
1:47
In another video, I'll show you running the wires, connecting the wires to the valves and connecting
1:52
them all up and setting up the control box. So we'll do that in another video. But today, we're
1:57
just, we're putting in a valve box and getting that already. ready to go. So first I'm just going to need a section of tubing and we're going to connect it here
2:04
I only need about this much. So I'm just going to cut some off. Now I'm going to be doing something a little bit weird. It's going to seem a little bit weird at first
2:15
And that's I'm going to run it to a valve, but I'm also going to run a bypass around the valve as a supply line
2:21
That's because I want to be able to supply other valves down the line. I've got a line that's going to go off this way
2:27
but the one I'm doing now is going off this way. So I'm going to have one that goes through a valve and that's going to feed individual trees
2:35
But I'm going to in parallel, I'm going to also be running a supply line so that I can have another valve down the line for other stuff
2:42
So I'm actually going to put in a T here and this T is a threaded T. In fact let go ahead and connect everything up All right I am going to use thread tape It going to help minimize leaks here Teflon thread tape
2:56
Just a couple of passes. That's it. We want to keep as much crap out of here as possible
3:05
because all that's going to get caught up down the line. Okay, then we can use some channel locks or something
3:12
and we can tighten this down really good. I'll use the handles of my crimp tool
3:19
Right there. Use what you got, right? All right. So this is actually going to feed into the valve itself
3:31
Let's go ahead and do that now. I've got some one inch PVC
3:36
We're going to glue that into here. Put on some gloves. Otherwise, I get the stuff all over my hands
3:41
Got Jake on the trencher over there. running a trench all the way down between the trees in our orchard
3:47
This is going to be so good when we're done. And all below ground so we don't smash it with the tractor
3:54
Get this stuff all the way around. Clean that pipe off real good
4:01
All right. Okay, we'll slide that on. Give it a twist like that and hold it in for a second
4:12
because otherwise, sometimes because of the pressure build up with the glue in there
4:18
it'll want to push back out. So it didn't take very long, but we just stick it in and twist
4:24
Okay? Now I'm going to cut off enough to put a 90 on here
4:34
So I only need to about here. Okay. I'm gonna stick a 90 on there
4:45
Being right handed, I actually find it's easiest if the end of the pipe is facing the right
4:50
so it's easy for me to just come around it this way
4:54
Going around it from the other side, it doesn't work as well. Some glue on there
5:00
Oh, I should have primed the other piece. So I could glue them both at the same time
5:05
All right. Okay. So I'm going to be coming off at that angle, just straight and parallel
5:18
Okay? We'll go this way. All right. Now while that's dry in here for a sec, slide this on
5:28
Doesn't matter as much. Normally, I'm just going to tell you, put the crimping on first before you attach it
5:33
Here it doesn't matter because the other end's still open. But just get in the habit because one of these days you slide it on and then it a huge pain to get it back off when you realize oh I forgot to put the crimp ring on and I need the crimping
5:48
Okay, so we're going to slide that on. You can rock it back and forth a bit until it's all the way on
5:57
You can use a rubber mallet that can help. Something plastic. I don't like to use a metal hammer
6:05
I don't want to bang it up. Okay, we'll crimp this. Okay, the other end is going to connect to my long line of tubing
6:18
because it's just going to run for a long time. So I'm not going to worry about connecting that quite yet
6:24
This other piece here, I'm going to be attaching to a little bit more of this
6:29
because that is going to be connecting to my valve. So let's go ahead and do that next
6:35
See, it's kind of a pain to, it's a lot of. easier to do it over the end like this
6:46
Okay, let that go. And then how far do we want this
6:53
Well, we'll go about this far. That'll give us some room to get into the valve box
7:01
Okay, here's our valve box. From above ground all you're going to see is that little
7:05
opening and it fits one valve perfectly. And here is our valve. That's the solenoid. This is the part that
7:15
will connect to the wires when we're ready for that. So next what I'm going to do is I'm going to put
7:21
these into here. Now the reason you can get valve boxes that don't have that don't screw that you
7:30
glue them into. I don't like that. If I need to, I can cut my line out here. I can understand. I can
7:35
unscrew these and reuse the same valve box housing or the valve housing if I have a problem
7:42
with my pipe. But if the pipe has a problem and breaks anywhere near here, if it's glued in
7:47
I may not have enough pipe to reuse it. So we're going to go ahead and we're just going to
7:54
we're just going to put these in. One in each end. With the Teflon tape
8:05
Also, you want it to be like as flat as you can
8:09
Sometimes it'll kind of bunch up and you'll get it kind of twisted
8:14
You don't want that. Ideally, you want it nice and flat on there. That's going to be ideal
8:19
And always go like this. Put the threads to your right hand, whether you're right hand or left, and go around it this way
8:25
What that going to do is it going to make it so that as you tighten this the threads it pulling that Teflon tape tighter It not unraveling it okay Now again ideally I have my channel locks with me and I don
8:40
So I'm going to use this crimp tool like that. As long as I can get a good quarter turn out of this or more
8:53
then I'm tightening it down plenty. That's a quarter turn or so after getting it as tight as I can with my hands
8:59
Okay. So, it does show on the valves the direction of flow of the water
9:09
So we want the water to flow this direction and that's, so I don't want the valve turning
9:16
this way. It's got to go this way, okay? I'm going to go ahead and glue that on right there
9:22
And we can do this because the valve box has these openings there
9:26
So when I'm done putting this in place, I just set the valve box over. and then I just bury it. We're good. Okay? So we'll go ahead and glue this in
9:36
Okay. So here I'm ready for the pipe to bypass and this is just right
9:53
And so now I'll connect it all right here and put that in place, put the valve And so now I'll connect it all to right here and put that in place, put the valve box over it, and we'll be good
10:05
Crimp ring first, then put this on. Perfect. So, you need to do a little more digging
10:21
Okay, I'll just come out. little further just to give us some rowing. Awesome. Now we're not going to bury it yet because as you can see
10:43
I don't, I need to be able to run the sprinkler wire along the pipe and through here. And also
10:48
I need to come off the other side still. So we'll bury it when it's all done, but this is already
10:54
at ground level, which is right how we want it, and then I'll run that other bypass line right off of there
11:01
So at least for hooking up the water, that is exactly how you connect a sprinkler valve
11:06
We run a water line to it, and through the other side, just make sure it's pointed the right direction
11:10
and make sure that you can run your sprinkler wire to it, which we'll do in another video
