So, Mike, kind of a follow-up from the previous video where we discussed the skill set that
0:06
new immigrants can get from getting contract jobs. And we know that there's a lot of new immigrants coming here in Vancouver and all over Canada
0:15
but some of them are having a hard time finding jobs because either they don't have local
0:20
experience or their degrees are not recognized or maybe sometimes some of them have language barriers
0:28
So, what tips do you have for those people who are trying to make a new life here in
0:32
Vancouver or in Canada and trying to find jobs? Yeah, it's a great question and this question is really near and dear to my own heart because
0:40
my own family immigrated similar to you many, many years ago. And Vancouver specifically is a melting pot, very multicultural, so many people are in
0:50
the same position. What I would say is that with the economy being the way it is, I think this is a good
0:59
time to actually take on those types of opportunities. Many companies with unemployment sitting at 4.7% specifically in BC, organizations are
1:10
making more concessions around the must-have skill set and the certifications that come
1:15
out with it and even local experiences at times. We did a survey through Robert Half and 86% of HR professionals said that they are actually
1:27
open to hiring first-time workers or employees who maybe lack some of the skills as long
1:35
as they can pick up and be trained in a quick fashion
1:43
So what it means is that as long as you have kind of the, not so much the technical aptitude
1:49
but the will to actually learn and pick up things quickly, you may get the shot for that
1:55
So it's a good sign. In terms of the actual tips that I would share, you know, it's very, very tough when you potentially
2:04
have an MBA from overseas or a degree or a certification might not be recognized out here
2:10
I think it's important to emphasize your previous experience. I think that organization needs to understand what would be the benefit
2:18
So I always think of it as a value proposition to what your skills will be an end benefit
2:23
to the organization or employer. So you want to highlight the tangible impact that you've made in your previous role that
2:31
are going to be transferable to the position that you actually are applying for
2:37
And again, looking at another point is that you want to ensure that when you are applying
2:43
you're not just throwing your blind resume at those opportunities. Again, taking the time to tailor, looking through the skills and seeing how your previous
2:55
experience matches them will give you an added benefit when you are actually taking the time
3:01
to apply to positions. Yeah, that's a great tip, Mike. I always tell to my clients or people that are asking me for tips, always tailor your
3:10
resume to the jobs. Make sure that you have those keywords. You cannot change your experience, but the profile part or the summary part, you can
3:19
change it so that... Because recruiters, as we know, they have between six or 10 seconds to check their resume
3:25
Your name, your profile, what have you done? Do you have the experience? Yes or no
3:29
And then we move forward. So make sure that tailoring resume is very important key
3:35
And for the audience, if you have any other tips that will be helpful for new immigrants
3:40
or if you have experience, please leave it in the comment section. We'd like to hear from you
3:46
Share this video to other people so that when they are searching for jobs, these tips might
3:51
be helpful for them. And tune in tomorrow for another question with Mike
