Have you ever wondered what you would see if you kept zooming into the sun

New video and simulations of the sun's surface can now bring you a closer look than we've ever had before

These images were captured by the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, the world's largest solar telescope located atop a volcano on Maui called Haleakala

which in Hawaiian means House of the Sun. The images provide evidence that seems to confirm a long-predicted theory about what may be occurring on the sun's surface

You're looking at what's been dubbed a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Essentially, it describes what happens when two fluids of different density move past one another

and the force they exert on each other creates swirling vortices that can look like mini hurricanes, whirlpools, or ocean wave dynamics

Monitoring these interactions on the Sun's surface more closely may help predict space weather

particularly coronal mass ejections, which are disturbances on the Sun's surface with potential to disrupt critical Earthly infrastructure

The Earth's magnetic field does a good job of keeping us safe from regular-sized ones

but big ones can still cause issues like blackouts or connectivity issues

Computer simulations created by researchers are also helping to provide greater insights

into these complex interactions occurring on the Sun's surface, ruled by fluid dynamics, shifting magnetic fields, and plasma physics
