Samsung Unpacked: What to expect from Samsung's new smartwatches

Like the tide, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 is coming inevitably and soon

July 22nd to be exact. And the stakes for Samsung are unusually high here

So here's what we know, what to expect, and what I actually want when this thing comes to fruition

Let's dive in. The stakes have never been higher. Dumb, dumb, dumb, thunder crash, drama, spectacle, but also real

The numbers for last year's watch, the Galaxy Watch 8, dipped compared to the previous year

People on the forums also really didn't like some of the design choices, like that whole squircle shape

I didn't mind it, but I've also always been a fan of the classic sport

It does two things, and it's only one thing. What's not to love? The watch

People said it was iterative. It kind of was, but it was also good. I review a lot of watches, including every major model that came out last year

and I thought this Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 was one of the best. It carried forward all of Samsung's stacked list of health and wellness features

like body composition measurements and snoring detection, and it added to that with antioxidant testing for dietary health insights

and vascular load for arterial health. It had Google's Gemini built in, it had a running coach

and a sleeping coach powered by Samsung's own AI. And not to brag but this is the Galaxy Watch 8 right here that I wearing and see the sparkle design isn that bad Still the competition is getting steeper Apple watch sales reportedly didn suffer The Google Pixel watches are getting

better and better. Google just launched this really good AI health coach. The OnePlus Watch 3

it uses Wear OS and it has really good battery life. So Samsung's got a fight on their hands

I mean, Ritz, these are watches we're talking about. So Samsung's got to bring it with big number nine

As for my expectations, those are just as juicy. We have some tangible stuff out there on the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2

and I'm going to put the link at the end too, and the anticipation is just going to make that video better

Anyway, we know what we're going to get in an Ultra 2. It's going to look pretty similar to the Ultra 1

It should be more durable. It should be faster and have a better chip

There has been some speculation that we're getting a new classic Model 2. You know, the one that looks real fancy and it has a spinny bezel

That'd be cool, my bet. No, it would break precedent. You see, Samsung usually does an every other year thing with their watches

So every year we get the base model plus one. Last year we got a base plus a classic

The year before, base plus an ultra. The year before that, base plus a classic

And the year before that, there was no ultra, but it was a base plus a pro, which is the

one that came before the ultra. So you see and it goes on and on like that since the dawn of time And if I wrong here I might be wrong And if I wrong I mean I not going to shave my head I not that sure or anything The next burrito I eat I put slightly less salsa on it

Dum, dum, dum. I told you the stakes have never been higher. Now here's what I want out of the

latest generation of Galaxy watches. Number one, battery life. Come on, Samsung. You gotta get your

watch to last more than a day or introduce fast charging or something, I will trade three

antioxidant level gimmicks. I mean, features. Antioxidant level detecting features for one

extra day of battery life. Number two, blood pressure. Yes, Samsung's watches currently

already have this, kinda. I give it half credit at best. You need a cuff to calibrate your

measurements. And if I have a cuff, why would I then use my watch to get the same info? You even

need to recalibrate periodically. And if I don't know there's a problem, why would I bother doing

any of this? Samsung's got to make this more seamless for the feature to make sense. Number

three, ultra only here, but let's talk durability for a second. If you're going to up it, let's make

it fit for water sports. The Galaxy Ultra line wants to compete with Apple's Ultra line, obviously

but for generations, Apple's line has been able to withstand the intense water pressure of diving or jet skiing

It can even act as a diving computer, so you can look at your watch and say

hello, diving computer. I mean, it won't do anything, but you can say that to your watch You legally can do that with the Samsung Galaxy Ultra They will arrest you Number four AI The latest Google Health Coach is really good It has all kinds of adaptive advice

to help you get in shape by forming a fitness plan. Last generation, Samsung's watches had a

running coach and a sleeping coach, and those were both good. They were a good start. But if Samsung

wants to stick first party here, they have to add versatility to their fitness AI if Samsung wants

to keep up with Google or, you know, don't bother. And they could just bring Google's AI on board

To that extent, and I'm not calling this one number five, but premium service. I know what

you're thinking. You're thinking, Andrew, Samsung is one of the last companies without a premium

health subscription. Why would you even bring that up? You're also thinking, Andrew, my goodness

you look really handsome today. And let me get to those each individually. First, I'm not saying

they should put their existing functionality behind a paywall. That would obviously be a big step in the wrong direction. I'm saying if they have a premium service and they can make it

worthwhile with some guided exercises and detailed AI-based fitness advice, it'd be interesting to

see that. Google Health Coach makes that premium feel worth it on Pixel Watches. For Apple, Fitness

Plus is a good get with all of those guided classes. You will find out the concrete answers soon
