'Phineas and Ferb' creators spill the secrets of "Squirrels in My Pants" and the show's other beloved songs

Well, you guys are both active on social media, and I'm curious, you know, you've definitely seen, like, Squirrels in My Pants was all over my TikTok a couple of years ago

Wow, yeah. Squirrels in My Pants! I'm curious, when these things happen, one, what is that like for you, and two, have they inspired these fan reactions, like what you want to bring back to the new seasons

At least now we know, I mean, not specifically. I think what we're conscious of is not just wanting to repeat the same thing

But what I've become aware of is the things that you think are going to click or are going to have a life outside of the show

Are not always the ones. Are usually not the ones. It's the stuff, and Squirrels in My Pants is the biggest example

When we wrote that, that was the song that we thought, well, that's got, it's funny, it works with the show

It has no life outside of this format. And yet, that's the one

Even during the initial run, the NBA was using it for dunking montages because it's

Tell Me What's Making You Jump Like That. Tell me what's making you jump like that

You guys have written so many wonderful songs for the show Do you have a favorite My favorite what I usually say is Summer Belongs to You That is probably the best song Summer belongs to you

Summer belongs to you. We were writing the song for the end of it, but we had not had a name for the special yet

And we got up to that point, and Martin and I were working on figuring out some chord structure

to sort of build up to a big chorus. and when we finally got that, Swampy was like doing a bunch of

throwing up rhymes and stuff like that filling yellow legal pads with words

and then we got up to there and then the chorus would go to E and so we sung it up to that point

and then got into the chorus and I just sang those words they just came out and they sang the answer backs immediately

and we sang the whole chorus, the whole first chorus exactly the way it exists the first time we were doing it

through and we jumped up and down in the in the writer's room it was so it felt like magic to us

and and also it's sort of like the best i think encapsulation of what the show is about

and the ones that that live in my heart though still are for one the theme song because there are videos of Bowling for Soup all over the world in clubs in music venues

And he can start that song two notes and the entire room, sings along word for word and that brings me great joy, but I still go back to Gitchy Gitchy Goo because it was the first like pop song that we wrote together for the show

Gitchy Gitchy Goo means that I love you. I said bow, chicka bow, wow. That's what my baby said. Bow, bow, bow. And my heart starts pumping

Which was the one that made the executives kind of go, that was fantastic. Can you guys write songs for every episode

We wrote that in the 40 minutes we had between two meetings. Or the Perry the Platypus theme, which we started while we were waiting to get gas in Dan's car

I used to have a natural gas car, and so there were fewer places to fill up

And sometimes you had to wait for the person before you because it takes a little bit of time. And Swampy was saying, I think Perry should have a theme song, but with a sung chorus

like a sung guitar lick like do do do And I was like exactly that Hold on Keep singing that And then we got back to the place and I just picked up a guitar and figured it out

And then we wrote the whole song. And the verse of that, it was literally swampy going and saying, well, let's see what a platypus

what are some facts about platypuses? And he went to the wiki page, which is still there

And it says, a semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal. and I said, of action

He's a semi-aquatic, egg-laying mammal of action. And that's how that first thing

We do not owe Wiki any money for this song. Is there anything else you want people to know

about the new season? It's really good. I think, I'm so proud of it, I'm so happy about it

You know, it's sort of a razor that you walk where you want it to feel new

but you want it to feel familiar. You don't want to, you know, like our goal was always

if you were watching fourth season, and you just kept watching in the fifth season, you wouldn't notice a bump

But I think it's some of the best stuff that we've ever done

I feel like there are multiple episodes this season that will replace people's favorite episode of all time in their heads
