Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas and John Carney reveal the songs they wish they had written

When it's clicking, all of the other stuff goes away

Stakes are so high, it's like you kind of forget that this is meant to be an art form that is creative and fun

It's kind of like a philosophical question that I actually wrestle with every morning

The chemistry between the two of you is awesome. My favorite scene in the movie is when you guys are just jamming in the hotel room

Every song I ever wrote in my life is about you. so good

as an artist and a filmmaker as well it touched on something that is really

I think kind of core to a lot of creators we get into it

for the joy of doing it and then we get into and then you start making a career out of it

and things take on different meaning as it does with them they're living in that

creative joy in that hotel room and then it gets muddy when you're making things

how much are you able to still access that joy and how much

does the other stuff play in I mean getting to work with someone like Paul. It's impossible not to

feel that joy. It was kind of a dream scenario for me. First day on set was that scene

And, you know, I've been such a fan for forever. Come on. And he just made it so

easy and fun and, you know, I've been on other sets for the first day that

stakes are so high and it's like you kind of forget that this is meant to be an art form that is creative

and fun and to whatever degree we just making things right It should be exciting and it felt that way right from the jump Yeah when it clicking all of the other stuff goes away

And you really, it is exactly like what you did when you were a kid

or you're making little movies with your friends, any of that stuff. In the moment, it can be electric

And so that whole sequence was really, really fun. and it felt very natural

I think we clicked and we hit it off right away and it clicked quickly

And it was also being kind of steered by John Carney, who's so cool and great

And, you know, we're in Ireland and it's all Irish people on the crew

It's just awesome. And they're funny. It was just such a good vibe all the way around

It seemed like a drink. Yeah, it really was. It's kind of like a philosophical question that I actually wrestle with every morning

I get up on a film set and I'm like, why am I getting up at 6 o'clock in the morning and told, be artistic now

But I'm like, but it's 5 o'clock, I want to be in bed now, and this isn't why I... And you're right, that as you become more professional and it becomes your career

you struggle with exactly that of like, where's the fun of this gone

and I counter that by trying to make the film sets fun

and trying to tell the crew to chill and relax We started to do this because we were in our bedroom dreaming and thinking what we could do And yes we got to pay our rent and I get my shit together and tell the story

but let's remind ourselves every day. And you're right, in the film, I'm glad that you point that out

because it is one of the things that the Rick character is kind of circling in his life in a way, isn't it

He's at the stage where he's going, I created this piece of work. It hasn't worked for a long time for me

Then it worked, and this guy stole my thunder. I want recognition, finally

But then he has to go past that point, and he has to go, actually, I'll be dead, and this song will live longer than me

and nobody's going to care who wrote it. So he has to go on quite a long sort of journey, which I'll like

You don't recognize it? Should I? Of course, yes, you should. That's my chorus and verse

Are you serious? You wrote that. Is there a song that you wish you had written? You listen to it and you're like, ah

There's so many. You mentioned this song before in different concerts, but God Only Knows is one of my favorite songs of all time

Genius song. That and Overjoyed, Stevie Wonder. Oh, what a song. Key Changes is just a brilliant piece Yeah Yeah which alignment is one of my favorite songs favorite songs That a beautifully written song I am a lion man for the county

Jimmy Webb wrote it. He was, I think, 19 or 20 years old

I saw Fleet play it last week. Oh, really? Yeah. Oh, man. Oh, that's awesome

Great song. Yeah, that's a beautiful song. I think Fairytale of New York is a pretty killer song

And the bells are ringing out for Christmas Day. I'm not really a songwriter, if I'm honest

I actually, apropos of what we're kind of talking about, at some stage in my life decided I wouldn't continue to make music my primary earner

or the thing that I was, maybe for that reason, that it was sacred to me

that I didn't want, and I'm glad that I've been able to make movies, pay my rent

and music is sort of just still a free-spirited thing that I happen to enjoy doing for movies

But I don't ever, and if I had to think about writing a song

that meant something to me, I would struggle. Or that I'd stand on a stage and play, like, that's not me at all

So I'm not worried about that for the music side of me

Do you know what I mean? That's what a good song can do, right? It has the ability to mean many different things to many different people
