This week's spotlight animal is a
0:02
classic African species known for its
0:04
distinctive black and white stripes.
0:06
It's the zebra.
0:08
Malcolm Walker here once again on Wild
0:10
but True. Zebras are found in grasslands
0:13
and savas across Africa from the Sahel
0:15
in the north to South Africa in the
0:17
South. There are three species of zebra.
0:19
The plain zebra, the mountain zebra, and
0:22
the gravies zebra. And each zebra stripe
0:25
pattern is as unique as a fingerprint.
0:27
No two zebras have the same stripes.
0:29
Plain zebras live in large herds that
0:31
can number in the thousands. They spend
0:33
their days looking for food and their
0:35
nights sleeping with their herd for
0:36
safety. They mostly eat grass, but they
0:39
will also eat leaves, bark, and fruit.
0:42
Sometimes zebras will purposely uproot
0:44
plants that they want to eat, and they
0:46
use their strong, sharp hooves to dig up
0:49
bulbs and tubers. Plain zebras are
0:51
active throughout the year, and they
0:53
don't really have a particular mating
0:55
season. Females will give birth to one
0:57
fo after a gestation period of around 12
1:00
to 13 months. Fos can run within minutes
1:03
of being born and they stay with the
1:04
herd for their entire lives. Plain
1:07
zebras are social animals and they
1:09
communicate with each other using a
1:11
variety of vocalizations.
1:13
They are most active at dawn and dusk
1:15
when they are most likely to be seen by
1:16
predators. To keep an eye out for
1:18
danger, each zebra has a personal
1:21
lookout, a special job that rotates
1:23
throughout the herd. When there is
1:25
danger, the lookout will bark and the
1:27
herd will run away. Predators such as
1:29
lions, hyenas, and wild dogs try to hunt
1:32
zebras, but zebras are fast and can
1:34
outrun most predators. They are also
1:37
agile and can easily escape by running
1:39
in circles. Their speed and agility make
1:41
them difficult prey. And sometimes when
1:43
a zebra kicks, it can send a lion flying
1:46
through the air. Zebras will also group
1:48
with wilderbeast. This gives them more
1:50
eyes to detect predators. There is
1:53
safety in numbers and it is better to
1:55
have more lookouts keeping an eye out
1:56
for danger. Mountain zebras are found in
1:59
the mountains of eastern and southern
2:00
Africa. They prefer hilly, rocky areas
2:03
with lots of vegetation. Mountain zebras
2:06
are smaller than plain zebras and they
2:07
have thicker fur. This helps keep them
2:10
warm in the cold mountain climates.
2:12
Mountain zebras are more elusive than
2:13
plain zebras and they are less studied.
2:16
So, we don't know a lot about their
2:17
behavior, but we think that they are
2:19
mostly active during the day, and they
2:21
spend their nights sleeping with their
2:22
mates. Mountain zebras are also
2:25
browsers, but they spend a lot of time
2:27
looking for green shoots and leaves.
2:29
They're also known for their
2:31
intelligence and their ability to adapt
2:33
to different environments. In some areas
2:36
where both mountain and plain zebras
2:38
live, mountain zebras will sometimes
2:40
steal food from plain zebras. The
2:43
largest of the three species is gravy
2:45
zebra. They are found in dry open
2:48
grasslands and they prefer areas with
2:50
scattered trees.
2:52
Like other zebras, they are prayed upon
2:54
by lions, hyenas, and wild dogs. But in
2:58
some areas, they also have to defend
3:00
themselves against crocodiles and male
3:02
lions. Sometimes gr zebras will form
3:05
loose groups with other herbivores,
3:07
including impala, warthogs, and even
3:09
giraffes. If you were to see a zebra
3:11
standing next to a giraffe, it would be
3:14
easy to assume that the zebra is the
3:15
smaller one, but in reality, the giraffe
3:18
is the tall one. Which zebra is your
3:20
favorite? Let us know in the comments
3:22

3:26
time.
