Hi, Malcolm Walker here and welcome to
0:02
Wild but True. There are over 200
0:04
different kinds of animals that we call
0:06
marsupials. They're found in both North
0:08
and South America, Europe, Asia, and
0:11
Africa. But by far the most well-known
0:13
marsupial is the kangaroo. Let's find
0:16
out why. Kangaroos are only found in one
0:19
country, Australia. There are five
0:21
different species of kangaroo, and they
0:23
come in a whole range of sizes. The
0:26
smallest species, the musky rat
0:28
kangaroo, is about the size of a
0:30
domestic cat and weighs around 2 kg. The
0:34
largest species, the red kangaroo, can
0:37
be nearly 2 m tall and weigh over 90 kg.
0:41
But what makes kangaroos so fascinating?
0:44
Well, their powerful hind legs enable
0:46
them to hop around at incredible speeds,
0:49
up to 40 kmh, which is around 25 mph.
0:54
and their strong thick tail acts as a
0:56
fourth leg, helping them to keep their
0:58
balance while they're hopping. Their big
1:00
feet are also perfectly adapted for
1:02
hopping. The heel of each foot has a
1:05
thick pad that acts like a shock
1:06
absorber, protecting their delicate
1:08
bones and joints from the impact of each
1:10
jump. They have longer upper body
1:13
muscles than other animals, which helps
1:15
them to conserve energy when they're
1:16
hopping. And instead of shoulders, they
1:19
have a special joint that allows their
1:20
arms to swing forward and backward in a
1:22
limited way. This is great for balance
1:24
while hopping, but means they can't do
1:26
things like climb trees or reach things
1:28
that are close up. See, there's no such
1:30
thing as a free lunch. Nature is full of
1:33
trade-offs. Most people don't know this,
1:35
but females have to utter and can have
1:38
two babies at once. How cool is that?
1:41
The female kangaroo gives birth to a
1:43
male, he will be known as a joey. And if
1:45
she gives birth to a female, she will be
1:48
known as a female just like her mother.
1:51
Female kangaroos have to find a new home
1:54
away from their mother's group. Usually,
1:56
they'll live with a group of other
1:57
females in their young. Males, on the
2:00
other hand, will stay with their
2:01
mother's group until they're around 2
2:02
years old. Kangaroos are herbivores, and
2:05
they spend most of their time looking
2:07
for food. They prefer to eat green,
2:09
leafy vegetation, grasses, and herbs,
2:12
but will also happily munch on fruits
2:13
and flowers. They get most of the water
2:16
they need from the plants they eat, but
2:18
will also drink water from rivers,
2:19
lakes, and dams. Since they live in hot
2:22
climates, kangaroos are mostly active
2:24
during the cooler parts of the day, like
2:26
dawn and dusk. They ll take shelter in
2:29
the shade or even dig burrows to keep
2:31
cool during the hottest parts of the
2:33
day. Because they're so big, kangaroos
2:35
have very few predators, and those that
2:37
do hunt kangaroos tend to go after the
2:40
smaller species. Dingoes and wild dogs
2:43
sometimes hunt kangaroos, but they
2:45
usually go after sick or injured
2:46
animals. Eagles and other large birds of
2:49
prey will hunt baby kangaroos, and
2:51
smaller kangaroos will sometimes be
2:52
hunted by snakes.
2:55
Humans are probably the biggest threat
2:57
to kangaroos today. Not because they
2:59
hunt them for food, but because they
3:00
destroy their habitat. As more and more
3:03
of Australia's wild spaces are turned
3:05
into farmland, kangaroos have less and
3:08
less space to live. And because they're
3:10
big and slow, they aren't very good at
3:12
adapting to human dominated areas. So
3:15
sadly, some species of kangaroo are
3:18
endangered. So there you go. You know
