One of the scariest parasites that can
0:02
invade your body is the pork tapeworm.
0:04
So, let's learn about it. Welcome to
0:07
Wild but True. I'm your host Malcolm
0:09
Walker. This parasite is called
0:11
tineiaolium and the disease it causes is
0:14
called cyus circuses. Neuroscyeresis is
0:17
a more severe form of this disease where
0:20
the larae migrate to the brain causing
0:23
seizures and other neurological
0:25
problems. Imagine having a worm in your
0:27
brain that can cause seizures and even
0:29
kill you. That's how scary this parasite
0:31
is. But how do you get infected? Well,
0:34
the primary way is by eating undercooked
0:36
pork that contains the larae of the
0:37
tapeworm. The larae are released in the
0:40
intestine and then they travel to
0:42
different organs through the blood
0:43
vessels where they form cysts. These
0:46
cysts are called cytoeri.
0:50
They can be found in the muscles, the
0:52
heart, the lungs, the liver, the kidney,
0:56
the eye, and even the brain. The cysts
0:59
can grow to be quite large, up to 1 cm
1:01
in diameter. They can stay in the host
1:03
for many years, causing problems like
1:06
abdominal pain, headaches, and even
1:08
mental illness. But how does someone get
1:10
the tapeworm in the first place? Well,
1:12
the eggs of the tapeworm are passed in
1:14
the feces of an infected person. So if
1:17
you have poor hygiene and you come into
1:19
contact with these feces, you can become
1:21
infected. Also, if you work in a
1:24
slaughter house and you don't cook the
1:25
meat properly, you can also become
1:27
infected. And even if you have a pet pig
1:30
that isn't properly cooked, you can get
1:32
the tapeworm from it, too. This is why
1:34
it's important to always cook pork
1:36
thoroughly. If you travel to a country
1:38
where this disease is common, it's
1:40
important to be extra cautious. Always
1:43
wash your hands thoroughly after using
1:45
the toilet and before eating. Don't eat
1:47
pork unless it's been cooked well and
1:49
avoid using night soil as fertilizer for
1:51
crops. This is a common practice in some
1:54
countries, but it can put you at risk of
1:56
getting this parasite. You can have
1:58
symptoms for weeks, months, or even
2:01
years before you seek medical attention.
2:04
And when you finally go to see the
2:05
doctor, diagnosing the disease can be
2:08
tricky. It can mimic other conditions
2:10
like epilepsy or schizophrenia. Even
2:13
imaging techniques like MRI can be
2:15
misleading because they may not show any
2:18
abnormalities in the brain. The gold
2:21
standard for diagnosing neuroscyesis is
2:24
actually doing a biopsy of the brain to
2:26
look for the presence of the parasite.
2:28
But obviously no one wants to have a
2:30
hole drilled into their brain just to
2:32
diagnose a possible tapeworm infection.
2:35
So what we do is we rely on clinical
2:37
suspicion and response to treatment. If
2:40
someone has a history of traveling to an
2:42
endemic area and they present with
2:44
symptoms of the disease, we might treat
2:46
them for it without even doing a biopsy.
2:49
And there are three main drugs we use to
2:51
treat this disease. The first one is
2:52
Pratziquantel. It's the main drug we
2:55
use. It works by paralyzing the worms so
2:57
they can be isoly expelled from the
2:59
body. The second drug is coreroids. Use
3:02
these drugs to reduce inflammation in
3:04
the brain caused by the death of the
3:05
worms. The third drug is anti-seizure
3:08
medications. These are used to control
3:10
the seizures caused by the parasite.
3:12
Fortunately, this disease is still
3:13
common in many parts of the world. In
3:16
fact, it affects over 50,000 people each
3:19
year. Most of these cases occur in
3:22
Mexico, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
