In many ways, the whole point of "Dexter" was pushing the envelope. It's a lot to ask of an audience to sympathize and relate to a serial killer, and yet the Showtime series asked viewers to do so from the very beginning. And it largely succeeded: Dexter Morgan had an ethical code by which he only killed people who were killers themselves, so the audience had a reason to root for him.
