Star Wars is one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, but we're so used to having the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, and the sequel trilogy that we may have never asked why the series starts with the fourth film chronologically.
Obviously, George Lucas didn't have every detail of the whole series planned out when he first took pen to paper and wrote the movie we now know as A New Hope, but he said early on that he was planning multiple trilogies.
