Survivors Of Lobotomies Speak Out
Sep 28, 2024
Following World War II, many U.S. veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health issues were subjected to lobotomies, a controversial and now-discredited procedure. The operation, intended to alleviate symptoms of mental illness, involved severing connections in the brain’s prefrontal cortex, often leaving patients with severe cognitive and emotional impairments. Thousands of veterans underwent this treatment, which, instead of providing relief, frequently resulted in permanent disability, loss of personality, and diminished quality of life, raising significant ethical concerns about the treatment of mental health in military veterans.
