Good morning everybody, it's Syvel Khair from beautiful Marrakesh here in Morocco
0:20
I arrived pretty late last night to the beautiful Riyadh I'm staying out, which is a large traditional house with a courtyard with a small pool of water in the middle
0:28
which are often now converted into hotels. I rode here late last night
0:33
Let me give you a quick tour of the Riyadh I'm staying at and then we're going to head out and hopefully explore the beautiful historic district here
0:39
in the central part of Marrakesh. Hopefully meet some incredible locals along the way
0:43
and also eat some good traditional food. So yalla, let's go. welcome
1:22
wow beautiful hey everybody welcome to Le Jardin's Secret here in the center of the medina in Marrakesh
1:35
dating back to over 400 years back to the Sa'dan dynasty a Riyadh here in Marrakesh is basically a traditional manor house
1:42
which centers around a huge water basically an oasis in the center of the Riyadh
1:48
Riyadh gives you, especially here in the centre of Medina, an oasis of quiet and peace
1:53
And as you can tell, it's beautiful. Let's take a look around. So just to the right of the main gardens, beautiful gardens, there's the huge pavilion
2:14
behind me is an amazing photography exhibit and it's stunning so much detail
2:20
and so much peace in what is a very crazy and busy market it's definitely
2:25
worthwhile coming here and spending just a bit of time in the morning relaxing
2:29
before taking on the very busy but very beautiful market Of course here in Marrakesh I had to come to the Ben Yusuf Madrasa
2:50
Madrasa literally translates to Islamic school and it's one of the best historic sites here
2:56
in Marrakesh dating back to the 16th century. As you can see it's filled with beautiful Islamic tiles and colours and beautiful detailing
3:04
It's in this afternoon light stunning. I am really just in awe of the incredible details
3:44
in this place. It really just offers you an oasis of peace in the middle of the crazy
3:49
market and you can see the tiling behind me All of the beautiful colours And this sculpture is sublime The detail is magnificent
4:01
Look at this. All around the edges. All around here. Beautiful panelling
4:09
All carved from wood. And the central piece. Just like the Riadzia in Marrakesh and Morocco
4:17
they all centre around a pool of water. offering it offering again an oasis of calm and also relief from the heat which comes here in the
4:28
middle of summer it gets pretty intensive but well coming to Marrakesh this has to be a good spot
4:46
smell the tunnel the barber gas mask Because the tunnel will have smell right inside
4:52
Smell the leather. Take it, man. Have a good time, man. Thank you, man
4:57
Bring us to the smell. Thank you. Nice to meet you. So the leather process here in Morocco is very, very famous
5:13
especially here in Marrakesh. And right now it's currently Friday. and every friday apparently the berbers from the atlas mountains they come here and bring the leather
5:23
to be processed here in the leather tannery and i've just arrived let's check it out let's see how
5:29
the process is made i've just been explained that the leather goes into the calc which is
5:35
then processed which actually makes the leather a lot softer and it's then put outside for 25 days
5:42
to dry and become a lot softer let's take a look around
5:46
so the entire process actually takes around roughly 50 days to make one piece of leather
5:55
which then goes for sale right behind me is cow and sheep and also camel leather which is being
6:01
processed right now so it goes into the calc and is air dried in the pretty scorching moroccan heat
6:06
so this right here is an example of the leather which is being dry that's cow leather
6:10
all the work is out here in the boiling heat okay so after the entire process this is one of the final results this is made from sheepskin
6:24
and they actually hand make the dyes from natural pigments so this right here is made from nettles
6:29
so there's two types of nettles one that is stinging and the other which is not they also
6:34
make nettle soup with that one and they actually make the green dye from that material this one
6:40
right here is from goat skin hand dyed with poppies and this right here is from the camel stomach
6:46
other examples this one here is made from the camel at the back of the camel all different
6:51
amazing materials all handmade here in the market so over 450 people individual people work to hand
6:57
produce all of the garments the bags everything else in between wallets handbags 450 people work
7:06
every single day to produce what you see in the store. And to be honest, actually incredible prices
7:12
for the amount of work that goes into hand processing, hand dyeing
7:16
and getting to this final resort. It's pretty amazing craftsmanship, which is pretty lost actually in this modern day work
7:23
of factories and machines. It's amazing traditions that I hope are never lost
7:30
What's the name? This? Limogran? Wow, really nice
7:44
Like baklava. incredible mosque which is over a thousand years old almost a thousand years old and i'm walking
8:21
through souk laksua i think the real name is pretty much a soup that you'll find anywhere here in
8:25
arabic countries filled with beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables beautiful clothing ceramics
8:31
handmade leather obviously fresh produce and it's incredible actually pomegranates right now i think
8:37
are in season so as you can see all around me there are beautiful fresh pomegranate juices being sold
8:44
shops like this as i experienced earlier leather here in morocco and especially marrakesh is
8:55
incredible all handmade with such delicacy and intricacy so many amazing shops around here
9:02
take a look at this wow I came here last night quickly for a quick walk around. I didn't actually bring my camera, but the things I saw were
9:38
Amazing so much culture and history right here in this place and I've arrived here around 6 p.m
9:43
One and a half hours before sunset We can check out hopefully a lot of amazing street food fresh fruit fresh fruit juices and hopefully a lot of nice people we can meet
9:53
along the way. What is the name? This is... Mixed. Mixed? Yeah, this gives us a go
10:02
I've just walked past and straight away I've already been given an amazing mix of fresh fruit
10:10
Whoa! That is... That is mango, apple and orange. Hello
10:23
There's a live snake. Whoa. No. Okay, I just arrived to this huge square, which is here so far
10:37
Unlike last night, which is a bit later, there's no live music just yet. All you can hear are the continuous whistles of the flute
10:45
which they use to enhance the cobras into dancing. I just came across one
10:50
Didn't expect to see them right here. Can you hear it? That's all the noise you can hear, it's just filling the entire area
10:58
And I can see so many stores with the cobalt. Wow, it's intense
11:07
And there are also monkeys too so they're not eating real life
11:25
Wow, monkeys, cobras all in the first five minutes of arriving. There are monkeys everywhere
11:33
Cobras here. Music I am also bumping into so many of you
11:58
So if you're coming up and saying hi, thank you. I appreciate every single one of you so much
12:03
This is such a special day to be here. Wow. Welcome. Shukran
12:13
Everyone here is so welcoming and so friendly. So this is one of the main streets heading off from the main square
12:25
And I came here last night and there was an incredible amount of people here. Huge bazaars, people selling things for a very cheap rate
12:32
And people go pretty much crazy here. And usually, as I've found in most Arabic countries, they come alive at night
12:39
So right now I'm just about to have some dinner before the sun sets. It's about an hour until the sunset
12:44
I'm going to head up and meet some of my good friends. And then we're going to spend the evening wandering around
12:49
seeing who we can meet. Hopefully tasting some good street food and sweets, of course. We're in an Arabic country
12:54
Sweets are the best. Morocco is very nice. Morocco is the best
12:59
Nice to meet you. If you guys are here, come to number 52
14:09
The guys are great. As I explained earlier, here, really in the Arab world, the streets come alive at night
14:14
And obviously, so do the Marrakesh, the incredible people I just met. That is the vibes you get from Marrakesh so far
14:19
Just lovely, kind-hearted people. Source here, competition. gyms, they're all setting lights here
14:26
And then there's a lot of amazing music, live bands everywhere. People here are just hanging out
14:32
hanging out with their families. And I guess getting a bit of a respite from the heat
14:37
Like today has been pretty close to 40 degrees, which has been very, very intense, but it's been amazing
14:42
Such a good day. It's such a good first day. And I can't wait, inshallah
14:46
to continue this epic journey across Morocco. okay and that right there was the first day in beautiful marrakesh here in morocco tomorrow i
15:12

15:28
if not I'll head up north to Megnes or Fez and then maybe head my way up to the coast I'm not
15:36
